FIRST THE MORNING CALL, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 i 997 C3 Stoeiroeir's Safe TD pass Arkansas past TMb 23-7. It was Notre Dame's second loss in as many weeks, dropping the Irish to 1-2. It hasn't been under .500 since 1986, when Lou Holtz's first team went 1-4 on the way to a 5-6 finish. That was also the last time Michigan State (3-0) beat 0 a points off two fumble recoveries deep in Maryland territory to go up 17-7 early in the third quarter. Ca-tasauqua grad Jon Linton tallied one of those TDs for the Heels.

No. 8 Michigan 38, Baylor 3 There was no letdown for No. 8 Michigan and no letup by its defense. The Wolverines didn't allow a touchdown for the second straight week and the offense gained 532 yards en route to a 38-3 victory over Baylor on Saturday. It was the second week in a row that Michigan (2-0), a Big Ten team, manhandled a Big 12 team.

They beat Colorado 27-3 a week earlier. No. 9 Ohio St. 28, Arizona 20 Andy Katzenmoyer picked off a shovel pass and returned it 20 yards as ninth-ranked Ohio State scored 14 points in 14 seconds of the second quarter on the way to a 28-20 victory over Arizona on Saturday. Ohio State, 3-0 for the seventh year in a row, had to recover an on-side kick and pick up a first down on a third-down running play with 1:30 left to lock up the victory.

Arizona (1-2), which beat Alabama-Birmingham 24-10 last week, hasn't won consecutive games in 22 months. But the Wildcats, 17V2-point underdogs, scored 20 points in the final period to make it interesting. No. 13 Iowa 63, Iowa St 20 Tim Dwight re-emerged as a force in Iowa's offense and the Hawkeyes once again had their way with Iowa State. Dwight, overshadowed in the Hawkeyes' first two games by running back Tavian Banks, caught three touchdown passes Saturday and made five other catches as No.

13 Iowa recorded its third straight rout, beating Iowa State 63-20. No. 17 Michigan St. 23, Notre Dame 7 Michigan State coach Nick Saban found out how good his team can be. Notre Dame coach Bob Davie discovered he's got more problems than he thought.

Marc Renaud rushed for 112 yards and Sedrick Irvin for 106, and the two combined for 381 all-purpose yards Saturday as No. 17 Michigan State beat Notre Dame Arkansas 17, No. 11 Alabama 16 Clint Stoerner hit a wide-open Anthony Eubanks for a 29-yard touchdown with 1:45 left Saturday, giving Arkansas a 17-16 upset over No. 11 Alabama. It was the second straight time the Razorbacks beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and it came in similar fashion.

Trailing by six with 3:34 left, Stoerner led Arkansas on a 58-yard scoring drive, one yard more than the fourth-quarter drive the Razor-backs used to pull out a stunning 20-19 win in 1995. Arkansas (2-1, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) stopped Alabama (2-1, 1-1) on four plays on the next drive, then ran the clock down to six seconds before turning the ball over on downs deep in Alabama's territory. Freddie Kitchens' desperation pass fell incomplete and, as was the case when Barry Lunney hit J.J. Meadors for the game-winner in 1995, the Crimson Tide crowd filed to the exit in shock. No.

5 Florida St. 35, No. 16 Clemson 28 Peter Warrick scored three long touchdowns, including a Deion Sanders-style 90-yard punt return, as fifth-ranked Florida State squeezed past No. 16 Clemson 35-28 Saturday and gave Bobby Bowden his 200th win as Seminoles coach. The Seminoles (3-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 21-17 a minute into the fourth quarter when Warrick chased a punt deep over his shoulder, slithered right and broke free for the first Death Valley return since Neon Deion did it for Florida State in a 1988 victory.

Warrick, a sophomore starter for the pass-crazy Seminoles, finished with eight catches for 249 yards. Florida State's Thad Busby had a career-high 332 yards passing. No. 6 N. Carolina 40, Maryland 14 Oscar Davenport passed for 281 yards and two touchdowns in his first start of the season, and No.

6 North Carolina pulled away from Maryland in the second half for a 40-14 victory Saturday. The Tar Heels (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed 7-0 in the second quarter, but scored 10 Michigan State running back Sedrick Irvin sprints through a hole line during the first quarter of the Spartans' win over the Irish in Notre Dame. No. 18 Virginia Tech 23, Temple 13 Ken Oxendine ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns and Temple twice fumbled away scoring chances in the fourth quarter, allowing No. 18 Virginia Tech to survive a scare and defeat the Owls 23-13 on Saturday night.

The tailback was a bright spot in an otherwise sputtering attack for Virginia Tech (3-0. 3-0 Big East), which averaged 415 yards a game in victories over Rutgers and Syracuse. Temple (1-3, 1-1) stayed within a touchdown and threatened twice in the fourth quarter with the Hokies leading 20-13. On the first, tailback Elmarko Jackson fumbled at the Virginia Tech 22 and on the second, fullback Stacey Mack fumbled at the Tech 7. No.

19 Washington State 35, Illinois 22 Ryan Leaf threw four touchdown passes as No. 19 Washington State rallied past win-less Illinois 35-22 Saturday. Despite Leafs three interceptions and the Cougars' 18 penalties, Washington State (3-0) overcame Illinois' 14-7 lead early in the second half. The go-ahead touchdown drive took just two plays and 25 seconds. No.

21 Stanford 27, Oregon St. 24 Greg Cornelia bulled over from 2 yards out for a touchdown with 27 seconds to play to give No. 21 Stanford a tough 27-24 victory over upstart Oregon State Saturday in their Pac-10 opener. Trailing 24-20, the Cardinal (2-1) drove 78 yards in 15 plays for the game-winning touchdown, using up 4 minutes and 18 seconds in the process. The Beavers, looking to upset Stanford in Corvallis for the second year in a row, moved ahead on field goals of 45 and 33 yards by junior-college transfer Jose Cortez in the second half.

No. 25 Georgia 42, Northeast Louisiana 3 No. 25 Geor- 7 21 of 36 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown. New Haven 53, Millersville 10 Junior Adam Roman caught seven passes for 154 yards and one touchdown, while returning three punts for 55 yards and one kickoff for 28, as New Haven defeated Millersville 53-10. Senior quarterback Cazzie Kosciolek, a Panther Valley graduate, completed 12 of 18 for 172 yards despite not playing the fourth quarter.

Albright 31, Lebanon Val. 7 Matt Santoro ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries Saturday to lead Albright to a 31-7 win over Lebanon Valley. Santoro scored on runs of 1, 14 and 73 yards as the Lebanon Valley defense was totally outmanned, allowing Albright (2-0 overall, 1-0 Middle Atlantic Conference) 477 total yards on offense. Albright quarterback Bryan scored on us with," noted Bison's head coach Tom Gadd, referring to Lafayette quarterback Mike Palos' 9-yard TD toss to flanker Tom Fal-zone in the second period. "When you have a 6-3 receiver Rockett working against a 5-9 or 5-10 defensive back the 'Pards' Brian Hannon, who is actually listed as a 6-footer, you have a good chance to make the connection." John is one head of Bucknell's two-headed quarterback (sophomore Don McDowell is the other), but Gadd admitted John may have separated himself from McDowell, especially with his cool-as-a-cucum-ber direction of the winning drive.

Moore 28 run (Menecola kick). Rockett 4 pass from John (kick failed). He started it with a 13-yard strike to wideout Ardie Kissinger at the Leopards' 43. Then, after an incompletion, he rolled away from a strong rush and found reserve tailback Jim Weidle, a Mahanoy Area grad, along the right sideline for 25 yards to the 18. And then he hooked up with Kissinger for 14 yards to the 4.

Lafayette coach Bill Russo thought the hookup with Weidle was critical for the Bison. "Yeah," said a disconsolate Russo. "That's the one that got them in range. Those are the things that happen I just don't think we got a very good rush on John. He had way too much time, even after he pulled it down and scrambled." 7 sr4 in Lafayette's loss to Bucknell 79 seconds too long gia protected its first ranking in two years, coasting past Northeast Louisiana 42-3 Saturday as Mike Bobo had three touchdown passes and the Bulldogs broke loose for three plays longer than 60 yards.

Georgia is 3-0 for the first time since 1988, when Vince Dooley retired after 25 years as coach to conclude the most successful era in Bulldogs history. Over the past four seasons, the Bulldogs were a mediocre 22-22-1. Widener 27, FDU-Madison 14 Leon Payne ran for 188 yards and two touchdowns to lead Widener to a 27-14 victory over FDU-Madison Saturday. Payne, who finished his second straight game with 100 or more rushing yards and a team high of four catches, put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with touchdown runs of 68 and 71 yards to put Widener (2-0) up 27-7. For FDU (0-2), freshman quarterback Mark Pollifrone completed The Bison score the winning TD after getting the ball with 1:19 left.

By TED MEIXELL Of The Morning Call Sometimes, Lafayette found out Saturday, simply playing better from one week to the next isn't enough. With 7,428 looking on at Fisher Field, defending Patriot League champion Bucknell saddled the heartbroken Leopards with a 23-21 defeat, their third straight, when outstanding junior wideout Ronnie Rockett gathered in Jim John's 4-yard fade pass at the left edge of the end zone with 33 seconds left in the game. Lafayette (0-3, 0-2) was clinging desperately to a 21-17 lead when Erich Muzi returned Ryan Cimo's last punt of the afternoon six yards to his own 44-yard line with one minute, 19 seconds left. But Rockett's touchdown catch, his second of the game, climaxed a precise six-play, 56-yard drive that consumed only 46 of the 79 seconds the Bison (2-0, 1-0) had to work with. And it drove a stake into the hearts of the Leopards who had, for 58-plus minutes, played much better football than they had in their first two losses.

The TD toss came on second-and-goal. John threw a fade in Rockett's direction on first down, too, but it fell incomplete, largely because a Lafayette defender had a firm grip on Rockett's jersey but got away with it. "I was coming right back with the fade no matter what," the junior signal caller said. "Even if you stop it once, Ronnie will make the catch on you four times in a row." "It was the same pattern they r-ij Associated Press the Notre Dame defensive South Bend. Snyder, a Nazareth graduate, broke two conference records in the game, holding the MAC record for career attempts (1,044) and completions (606).

Snyder surpasses the -mark previously held by Lycoming's Ed Dougherty (1988-91). Monmouth, N.J. 42, La Salle 20 Dan Sabella passed for three first-half touchdowns to lead Monmouth to a 42-20 win over La Salle in the Hawks' home opener. Villanova 34, Maine 14 Chris Boden threw for 323 yards and two touchdowns and Ducarmel Augustin scored three times to lead Villanova over Maine 34-14 Saturday. Dartmouth 23, Penn 15 Kickers often score a lot of points, but Dartmouth's Dave Regula had an exceptional day in a 23-15 victory over Penn Saturday.

Primarily because their long-dormant offense came to life midway through the second quarter, the Leopards twice fought from behind. The Bison went ahead 10-0 on Ross Coleman's 31-yard field goal. But Palos warmed up and drove the 'Pards to two second-quarter TDs and a 14-10 halftime lead. The 9-yard fade to Falzone was the first, a two-yard flip to Jerry Terry the second. Palos was 13-for-18 for 202 yards in the first half.

He was just 1-for-10 for 16 yards in the second, but Bucknell's added concentration on pass defense opened up Lafayette's ground game. So, even though Bucknell opened the second half with a 68-yard TD drive to go ahead 17-14, the Leopards were able to answer with tailback Leonard Moore. Moore, who rushed 15 times for 97 yards, burst through a gaping hole and romped 28 yards to score and put the 'Pards ahead again with 7:15 left. On the drive, Moore ran three times for 45 yards, and Palos chipped in with his only second-half completion, a 16-yarder to fullback Todd Stahlnecker. Then, when Derik Mesquita intercepted John at the Lafayette 15 with 3:51 left, it looked like the Leopards' first win was imminent a feeling that grew when Palos scrambled for a first down three plays and two Bison timeouts later.

Unfortunately, on the play, Palos aggravated an ankle injury sustained a week earlier at Army. He had to be replaced by Todd Greenbaum for one play, and that proved costly when Greenbaum fumbled the snap. Although he recovered it himself, the wasted play and subsequent punt forced Lafayette to give up the ball with 79 seconds left. It was 44 too many. FAR WEST Colorado Col.
