Bluford, an NASA astronaut since 1979, was most recently a mission specialist aboard the combined -German Spa-celab mission in October 1985. Launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, this U.S. Spacelab mission was the first in which payload control was transferred to a foreign country, in this case Germany. In 1983, Bluford first served as a mission specialist aboard the third flight for the orbiter Challenger and the first mission with a night launch and a night landing. Having logged a total of 314 hours in outer space, Col.

Bluford's assignments have included working with the remote manipulator systems, Spacelab-3 experiments, Shuttle systems, Shuttle Avionic Integration Laboratory (SAIL), and Flight Systems Laboratory (FSL). Following graduation in 1960 from Ov-erbrook Senior High School, Bluford earned a bachelor of science in aerospace engineering from Pennsylvania State University as a distinguished Air Force ROTC graduate in 1964. After attending pilot training at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona and receiving his pilot wings in 1965, Bluford flew 144 combat missions in Vietnam with the 557th Tactical Fighter Squadron. Following his tour in Vietnam, he served as an instructor pilot at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. In early 1971, Bluford attended Squadron Officers School and returned as ai executive support officer to the deputy commander of operations and as school secretary for the wing.

In 1972, Bluford entered the Air Force Institute of Technology where he earned a masters of science degree with distinction in aerospace engineering. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the 4571 TILGHMAN ST. (Intersection of Rt. 309) HOURS: Thurs. Fri.

Bluford married the former Linda Tull of Philadelphia. They have two sons, Guion, 22, and James, 21.
