The band might go a little too deep on some of the longer cuts (seven of the nine songs exceed five minutes), and the thought arises that this probably would have made a better EP than album. But the stronger moments make it worth enduring.

If you like music that sounds better in the dark, "Cin- dy" might be just the thing for 1 your next power failure. John A Tarhsky EPIC SOUNDTRACKS: Rise Above (BarNone) "Rise Above" seems too hopeful a title for a solo album by someone so boutrfully bombed upon in the battle of the sexes; song titles such as "Ruthless" and "Love You Up" bear out Soundtracks' scars quite vividly, wouldn't you say? The former Swell Maps drummer, with help from Dinosaur J. Mascis and Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo and Kim Gordon, among others, writes in raw, naked terms about the frustration, confusion and pent-up hostility that ferment when a romantic relationship ends before it begins. It's heartening to hear in one song that Soundtracks is at least able to lift himself up off the carpet for one more round of one-upmanship: "Hey, ruthless. Now so am hey hey!" Sobbing cellos, creaky violins and, most frequently, a plaintive piano are used to accompany traditional rock instrumentation in songs that despite expressing such deep emotional turmoil, are for the most part tuneful and tastefully presented in either an art-pop or ballad format.

"I don't trust a soul after this," Soundtrack sings. "Not even me." Keep that chin up, big guy! Rich Harry EARTH, WIND FIRE: Millennium (Reprise) With renewed interested in '70s styles and music, the timing is auspicious for the return of Earth, Wind Fire, which rode the disco decade to chart success with such hits as the No. 1 Grammy-winning "Shining Star." "Millenium" features the group's original lineup, including founding member Maurice White and lead vocalistsongwriter Philip Bailey. There are more than a half-dozen standouts among the disc's 16 tracks, making this a -must-have for long-time fans. The danceabie "Even if You Wonder" leads off with the Horns and White's smooth vocals.

Reflecting the smart Use of outside writers are Two Hearts," a Burt Bachar-ach collaboration, and Prince's "Super Hero," with his Purple Nametessness programming drums and keyboards and contributing vocals. Bailey lays claim as Marvin Gaye's heir apparent with "Just Another Lonely Night" It's TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) for "Love Across the Wire," written by White, Bailey and Thorn Bell, with that "Betcha By Golly Wow" sound and electric si-tars. There's lots more here to like, from Quiet Storm ballads the Nighf to funky dance tracks ('The 'L' Even White's self-referential "Chicago (Chi-Town) Blues" is lots of fun. Paul Wiilistain" ft isn't it The whoie idea of pay- -ing homage to an artist by reinterpreting his or her work is questionable, but especially in this case. Hendrix's music was of his time it derived its raw power from its newness in the mind-expanding tumult of the '60s.

Twenty-five years down the line, what is a group of perennial mopesters like The Cure supposed to make of "Purple A synthesized, sampled, slowed-down mess, that's what Pat Metheny plays guitar, but what else has he got in common with Hendrix? Nada, judging from his slick, progressive jazz emasculation of "Third Stone From the Sun." And would Hendrix really consider a flaccid, new age-y (complete with cellos) instrumental version of "Fire" a "tribute?" Those performers that simply mimic the originals the Spin Doctors (I) doing "Spanish Castle Magic" and MAC.C. the lesser-known "Hey Baby" fare better. But really, you might as well listen to the real thing. And, in the end, that is probably the most appropriate tribute you could pay. John A.

Terlesky INXS: Full Moon, Dirty Hearts (Atlantic) 1 admit it I expected that listening to "Full Moon, Dirty Hearts" would be like hearing the same song over and over again. Concentrated doses of INXS produced similar reactions before. But hey, you figure guest vocals by Chnssie Hynde on the title track and Ray Charles on "Please (You Got That)" would have to make some sort of difference. And they do. But the rest of "Full Moon," the Australian band's 1 0th album, sticks close to the INXS formula.

"Full Moon" was recorded on the tiny Italian island of Capri, off the coast of Naples. This group-retreat approach to recording interrupted by a brief, nostalgia-inducing tour of small clubs was supposed to bring the band back to its roots. (Just the opposite approach used on the album before this, "Welcome To Wherever You Are," which came to signify the band's "experimental" phase.) Sure enough, there are the requisite dance-rock tracks 'Time," "Cut Your Roses Down" and "The Messenger" which aren't fresh. But there's an injection of Motown in "Make Your Peace" and "Please (You Got That)" (with Charles) they're fresher. Surprisingly, what INXS is realty perfecting forced to- gethemess or not are ballads.

Standout tracks "Kill The Pain" and "Freedom Deep" prove slowing down is far different than stopping. Melam'a Novak ACETONE: Cindy (Vernon Yard) Acetone has chosen to occupy one of the more dark and creepy corners of the musical 'basement The sounds of the band's debut disc are appropriately murky, walking the line between eerily beautiful and' just plain sleep-inducing (and, occasionally, stumbling). Influences are worn on the sleeve, almost to the point of appropriation: "Come On" sounds an awful lot like the Velvets' "Ocean," while "Barefoot On Sunday" could be Link Wray and Neil Young with a six-pack and some pills. But on the downright pretty "LouiseM" and "No Need Swim" Acetone encourages group action (socialism) over indivkiua! initiative (capital Ism). Chilling stuff.

Wake up, America! Len Righi "WEIRD AL" YANKOVIC: Alapalooza (Scotti Bros.) Just when you thought he could never make you laugh again, "Weird Al" comes up with "Jurassic Park" (sung to the tune of "MacArthur "I'm afraid those things will harm me'Cause they sure don't act like Barney And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend." "Weird Al's" latest batch of parodies also includes "Bedrock Anthem" (sung to the tune of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Give It "Achy Breaky Song" (Billy Ray Cyrus) and "Uvin' In the Fridge" (Aerosmith). Most surprising of all is "Bohemian sounds less like a parody of Queen and more like the real thing played at 45 rpm. "Alapalooza" trails off into a collection of Yankovic originals some amusing ('Talk some not 2000-Inch and all derivative (what else would you expect from a guy who does song Despite its unevenness, "Alapalooza" is generally amusing. However it falls down for one simple reason beyond "Weird Al's" control: A good joke, no matter how funny, is only funny once. Larry Print! FRANK ZAPPA: The Yellow Shark (Barking Pumpkin) Like many of Zappa's live recordings, this is a collection of some of the bestaperf or-mances from seven European concerts that Zappa and the -German-based, 26-piece, Ensemble Modem organized last September in Frankfort, Berlin, Vienna.

The performances included older Zappa material, plus some less-heard compositions, but all played without guitars or synthesizers, two in- -struments which have come to dominate Zappa's music. Horns and strings dominate here, a refreshing change in itself, but best of all, the ensemble, unlike some of Zappa's other orches-' tras-for-hire, is capable, of mak-' ing make the mercurial changes that Zappa's music demands. It also sound as if the musicians are having a great time, which should be a requirement for playing this music. The disc in-eludes two new arrangements of the 1 968 work, "Uncle Meat" There also are some environmentally themed pieces, "Outrage at Vatdez," about the Exxon tanker spill, and 'Times Beach II and III," inspired by the Missouri town that was contaminated with deadly di-oxin. Both pieces are not often heard.

The 3-minute Valdez piece, for instance, was commissioned as part of a documentary on the spill, but the producers used only 90 seconds of it -a TimBlangger VARIOUS ARTISTS: Stone Free: A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix (Reprise) Hendrix empowered the rock 'n' roll guitar, taking what was basically a rhythmic backing instrument and turning it into a three-dimensional force of howling electric expression. 1 For this he deserves some kind of tribute, but "Stone Free" I J.00 LMJappaln-Bc2 SCO, ttUtwAVJ Diana COa Suss Wad I LjJ Zsppaln CompWwIO Bvis Prsskw SPa Bret Sets RfcaBoxSal ..4 CDs S44 ee wad Cue tez.ee wed CD's tse.ee wrad EMa CodeHoBox Set 4 COa ass ee wad Rod Stewart CDs tlr.tewM 4 CDs MM Wad CDs KmZIS CD RACKS NEW 8TYLES IN STOCKI SATURDAY IMPORT DOORBUSTERS The Lowest Prices in tha World Guaranteed!
