A 34 THE MORNING CALl. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7, TO5 I NATION Wilma Mankiller: new Cherokee chief By JACK ELLIOTT Of The Associated Press fairs. "The only people a little worried are my family, and they're worried about the time I'll spend on the job. They're expecting an over-tired, overworked mom," Mankiller said about her two children. "My grandson now he thinks it's great that grandmother is a chief." Mankiller said she had received much support in her new job leading the tribe.

Wilma Mankiller, sworn in Thursday as the first woman to head a major U.S. Indian tribe, says she's excited about her new job and the chance to try to break "the circle of poverty" among Cherokees.

Mankiller became principal chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, succeeding Ross Swimmer, who held the post for 10 years before being confirmed Wednesday as head of the federal Bureau of Indian Af OPEN DAILY SUN. 12-5 MM WICKER GIFTS PICTURE FRAMES LOCKS 730 Hamilton Mall, Allentown 437-1 077 Open Daily P.M.; Sun. 1 2-5 sue. We all knew this was coming," she said. 'The issues are our programs, the breaking of the circle of poverty, not me." As Swimmer took the reins of the Indian affairs agency Thursday, Mankiller took the oath as chief in private ceremonies in her office at Cherokee Nation headquarters in Tahlequah.

She had been Swimmer's deputy. Mankiller, 40, becomes the tribe's spokeswoman and overseer of a $30 million annual budget that includes scores of small businesses, manufacturing ventures and a social and community service empire in 14 counties of northeastern Oklahoma, and an annual payroll that tops $9 million a year. She describes the Cherokee Nation as "scholars not warriors" with economic and social roots in Oklahoma as deep as the memories of the "Trail of Tears," which brought the Cherokees to the Oklahoma territory in the winter of 1838. "We are staffed with professionals educators, physicians, attorneys, businessmen," she said in an earlier interview. "Our history has been one of organization and personal and economic development." Mankiller will complete the two years remaining on Swimmer's term and said she intends to run for her own four-year term in 1987.

Formal installation ceremonies are scheduled for Dec. 14 in Tahlequah. "We were going to wait," she said. "But after talking to Ross and other tribe leaders, we decided to have the private ceremony and get me sworn in so I could begin some official acts. "I'm excited, very excited," she said, but added, "I don't expect it'll be anything other than business as usual." She had been waiting about two months as the Senate did not take immediate action on President Reagan's Sept 28 nomination of Swimmer to be an assistant Sec- GREAT GIFT IDEAS LAYAWAY FOR CHRISTMAS Hanging CHRISTMAS POTPOURRI Great for sachets, party favors, weddings, anniversaries.
