8 PEOPLE, PLACES, THINGS Lafayette memorabilia on display in library A collection of Lafayette memorabilia from the 18th and 19th centuries is on display in Lafayette College's Skillman Library for September and October. The exhibit is being held in conjunction with the Lafayette Sesquicentennial Symposium (yesterday through tomorrow), which marks the 105th anniversary of the death of the Marquis de Lafayette. Selected from the college's own collection and that of the American Friends of Lafayette, a national Francophile organization based at the college, the items on display range from Lafayette's personal sword to a pair of commemorative doorknobs. Many of the pieces are items which be longed to the French general himself. In addition to the three-edged French rapier which he wore for everyday use, the exhibit also includes an inscribed presentation sword given to Lafayette by his fellow officer of the Guard Nationale.

Letters from Lafayette to the American Revolutionary leaders, a piece of scarlet fabric from the furniture of his death chamber and his gold pocket watch are also on view as is the well-worn brief case in which Lafayette's son brought the general's Washington papers back to France. Also in the collection is an ornate ivory fan which Lafayette presented to a lady at an American ball in his honor in 1824. Also displayed are more than 500 prints of Lafayette now owned by Lafayette College. They show the Marquis in a number of poses taken throughout his life, from youth to maturity. One French portrait depicts Lafayette being guarded by the ''spirits of the defenders of American liberty." The bulk of the exhibition consists of samples of Lafayette commemoratives, many of which were produced in 1824 to mark Lafayette's farewell tour of America.

Plates, pitchers, jewelry, medals, coins, even a pair of gloves, display the Marquis' famous profile. The exhibit is located on the second floor of the library and may be seen during regular library hours.
