Man Anson has not taken his old place at first base and as field captain of this years colts They are also finding fault with tha team wnicn is floating the Windy Citys banner Indeed the players have begun the season in a way which leads one to the conviction that they are weak to excess The cranks demand reorganization and the return of Anson to his old position They also i rislst that Ryan resume his place in the outfield Ryan says that the nine will never play good ball until Anson returns to first base Decker is a good man but he is not Anson The Old captain may not be as fleet Of foot as Walter Wilmot but heJsa tower on the field and exerts an in fiuence over the men which can be replaced by no one The element of brains is largely lacking in tbe nine as it is now made op Anson would fill the gap and there can be no doubt that the complexion of things would change were he to take the field again 1 JDESTBIAXISM DEAD Futile Efforts to Revive the Sport In th Kast To those who average player But this is hardly so To the systematic pldyer it is in reality a verv simple thing as knowledge of the leads from being able to read their meaning furnishes the uniform information on which you proceed The cases that most frequently arise are when third hand hold exactly four cards of the suit and an ace queen knave or ten is led and necessitates unblocking in ways that come more strictly under tbe technical use of the term The plainest example of unblocking is when partners lead as above indicates fiv eormore In tbe suit and you hold four exactly all lower ths the one led here you play yonr third best on the high card first led and retain your lowest until the last round of the suit Say for example the ace is led originally by a player who knows the leads You at once know there are iour more cards in his hand of the suit third player holds let us say king queen knav and deuce four cards of the suit the fifth card in first hand becomes good for a trick pro viding talked of catch as catch can wrestling match between George Eckhardt the Olympic Clubs champion and Charles Andrews tbe pride of tbe Acme Club interest in the event increases At the Olympic Club the boys talk of little else than tbe meeting of these clever athletes on Tuesday next and of course they are confident their man will win In a canter Daily bulletins are received from Eckhardt training quarters at Milbrae where Dan McLepd is putting him through the necessary sprouts During the past week manv of the best Olyrapfan wrestlers including Professor Miehiing the instructor of the branch at the club have been making trips to Milbrae for the purpose of assisting George in his work All of them report him to be in splendid condition and as strong as a lion Over at Andrews training quarters at Tiburon Al Lean is putting tbe finishing touches on the Oakland gladiator Andrews has been somewhat handicapped in his preparatory work by the persistence of several boils which made tbeir appearance on his neck and arms when be went into training But as be did not have to reduce his weight to any extent his work was not necessarily violent nor painful He has been devoting most of his time to developing bis wind apparatus for he ex pects a long and protracted battle with the Olympic wrestler Those who have seen these two athletes look for one of the most scientific and stubbornly contested matches Tuesday nightever seen in the city Although the men are amateurs they are the superiors of most of tbe professionals of their weight They are so evenly matched that the Prognostications on the result are ac companied by innumerable ifs and other dubious expressions isazeneVan Upurt of tbe Kellancn and Olympic clubs is recognized as one of the best experts on wrestling on the Pacific Coast and an Opinion from him regarding tne coming ma ten carries considerable weight among those who are interested in the result Van Court looks for a great exhibition lie taught Andrews most of his best holds And locks and quite naturally expects his protege to win Andrews is a more powerful man than Eckhardt in my opinion said Vnn Court recently He is game courageous and enduring but he is apt to become a little hot headed at times and lacks coolness and deliberation When caught in a tight place he olten gets rattled 1 think he is a little too sensitive being quick to take offense at any manifestations of disap proval or nis aggressive raemoos on the part of the spectators But he does hot know what fear is and in this respect is fnllythe equalot Eckhardt It would be hard to find two more eonallv matched tncn and I think that when the match comes off those who attend will witness the greatest catch as catch can wrestling maun that ever took place in this country by two of the Best 140 pound athletes in America I think Andrews will win It if he can go on the mat unhampered by any of the numerous bolls which insist upon making their appearance
