iWAm Chief t3ommUari rr Ii 1 sJ A SCHMITZSAYS mUmMWSL Asserts That Democratic Nom ineQ Told a Malicious Lie and Knew It When He Spoke I Mayor Schmitz was scheduled to speak at five meeting last evening but three of them broke up before he could arrive Two were out near1 the ocean beach on the north and south side of Golden Gate Park at Fourth avenue and Clement street In the Richmond district and at Ninth avenue and street In the Sunset dls trict These were the Only two at which the Mayor appeared Impatient audiences at three meetings In the Mission held at Harmony Etntracht and Butchera halls grew weary of the delay and left for their homes The meeting held in the Sunset district was attended mostly by women and children not one half of the audience being voters All of the speakers took occasion to rejoice at this fact as It showed that the campaign was being carried Into the homes When Mayor Schmltx arrived It was a shrill cheer which went up mostly of small boys voices The Mayor launched at once into a brief but vehement tirade against Lane While I am not entering upon a campaign of mud slinging he said while I do not approve of that political method which Franklin Lane has introduced into this battle I still am forced to refute some of Lanes lying statements which he made a few nights ago in this very hall Lane told you that the salaries of employes In the park had been lowered by me or by my appointees I brand that statement as a malicious lie I am plain In my speech because It Is necessary That was a He and Lane knew It was a lie when he said It This Is the kind of campaign which Is being waged by Franklin Lane who asks your support as head of the Democratic ticket Because he has no especial claims of his own to advance he slings mud thinking to besmirch some other mans character so that he may remain In the background of the picture In a beautiful pose as the savior of San Francisco The Mayor then pointed out that only recently the salary of the gardeners In the Park had been raised from 2 50 to 2 75 per day He made the old plea that he had been Mayor of all the people and then gave his wage earner talk winding up his speech with the assertion that he was glad to see so many ladles present because he said It shows that the issues of the campaign are being talked over with your husbands your sweethearts and your brothers The Mayor talked upon similar topics at the meeting across the Park and then tried to connect with his three other meetings but failed to get there In time GERMANS ARE FOR CROCKER Continued from Page Nine whenever quiet seemed near some enthusiastic Republican would mount his seat in the body of the theater and say Three cheers foT Mayor Crocker and then the racket would get a new start It was the sanrje when he began to speak and every point in his brief but telling speech was punctuated wtth a roar of cheers He said Mr Chairman Gentlemen of the GermanGerman American Republican Club Ladies and Gentlemen I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this kind reception I thank this audience for the warm expression which they no doubt intend to the glorious Republican party which I have the honor to night to represent as Its candidate for Mayor I thank you on behalf of my constituents I thank you on behalf of the nominees on the ticket for the vote which I know you will roll up for the whole ticket Applause The campaign has now reached the stage when you have heard the candidates speak of the Issues You have got to know the people who are going to represent you for the next two years If I am to have the honor of being elected by the people of San Francisco as the Mayor of Greater San Francisco I simply want to say this I am no politician I am not much of a talker But I am Imbued with that spirit which people have in your old country when their services are demanded by the army for two or three years a matter of compulsion but which I know they gladly render Here In America we have no such laws but there is nothing in the world to prevent a man who if you please has been somewhat successful from giving two or three years to his civic duties and to be able to perform them in an upright willing manner Applause KNOWS HIMSELF have been for the last twenty six years looking out for the welfare of a gentleman whom I may say I am related to Henry Crocker Laughter I have looked out for that man and I know that his motto has been that of integrity I know that if he has been successful it has been because he never left a Job until he got another one and he never left that other Job in his life until he knew he was going to get a better one This Is the first time In my life that I have been out of employment This is the first time that I have closed my desk and come before you seeking employment for the good of the city of San Francisco Great applause I wish to say that if you will employ me I will give you every moment of my time I will give you that time as I have given it to my own affairs and I In honor of the office you have conferred upon me will do in office that which the best citizens of this city wish I will attend to her interests in a manner that will be as far as possible above reproach One cannot please every one he can only please the mass of the people and if I am intrusted with the administration of this city I shall conduct it for one and all I am for no class legislation Cheers I am not entangled by any party lines when It comes to municipal government I believe in treating the worklngmen with the same treatment that their unions would give them something that Is Just and proper I believe In giving ta the people of San Francisco no matter what their party is an equal distribution of rights Applause You have voted almost unanimously4 for a charter which is the basis of our civic government to day You have gone to work and studied the matter oyer carefully and you have voted for a large appropriation for bonds to beau tify this city now ladies and gentlemen and especially you voters of San Francisco I have been from one end oj this city to the other 1 have come this evening from the further end of the city at South San Francisco and along TennesseeTennessee and Sixteenth streets and lota of places where some of you people have meyer been I have been1 among the worklngmen I have been among the capitalists 1 nave been throughout this city and everywnere i me ten you that I am greeted with the same atten tlon that am netting here to nih The worklngmen sJttIoWng yeryideep ly aDoui me goYeromenrjnejiare going to have for the next twoyearsto follow up the victories thatthey haveiachle ved in eettine a rood charter and in srettins a good bond issue iAnd inowitheyfe are golngto have a goodf governmentAp4 plauae i for his days pay and da tt honestly and I say that he will pledge hlsfrtend shlp to his brother workman for future benefit but I say there is one thing that the worklngmen and people of the United States 4 do not do and that is they do not pledge their votes to the support of any one sided proposition And that Is going to be demonstrated beyond per aaveniure oi a aoubt on November They are going to vote for Mayor of San tFranclsco they are going to vote the Republican ticket and since I have the honor at this time to represent that ticket they are going to vote for me be i cause they have come to theifconclu i slon as they have said In delegations in my office We have watched this nomination we have watched you we heard you were an aristocrat but we and you are a plain man We Relieve from what we near you say that you mean wna ffilJW atoi BffiS lmuiui Henry Crocker for Mayor of San Francisco Applause In the administration of this citys affairs it devolves upon the Masor to make the appointment that shall he best We are afraid from what wehave seen In the past that 1f this jcity falls into the hands of such appointments as have recently been made that we will be a long sulterlng population because we wlU be beyond helping ourselves I sav that If I am elected I will ap point Commissioners that shall at least be the best men I carr secure Ap JDE UARTINI In this elty Oeteber2T Fri plause I say as I have said in South San Francisco and those places that 1 can speak for the child oi six montns and for the man and woman who look with pride upon their offspring I can say that even the children are going to be benefited by thla bond lemio because they are going to have improved sanl tiry condpUlons In some partr of this city where the death rate will not be as great as It is now Applause We need good public tchool fKerewe1 applause We heed good parks for breath places for the children and we need a good administration that hnll harmonious in the City Hall Cheers Ladles and gentlemen If I am elected to the office of Mayor you have heard to night all the pledges I have ever made to get that otnc I thank you Prolonged cheers Other speakers were General Salomon Lynch Percy Long and Julius Kahn all of whom were heard with great enthusiasm The meeting adjourned with a song and a cheer for Crocker and his ticket BEATEN FOE WEAEDIG A CEOCKEE BUTTON A Boarding House Proprietor Assailed by Schmitz Men no Water Front William Ahlstrand proprietor of the Arizona Hotel a sailor boarding house at 11 Clay street states that he was attacked in Oscar Holmbergs ealoon at 12 East street last evening because he wore a Crocker button The assailants he says were Schmitz men I often go into Holmbergs saloon Ahlstrand raid last night when he appeared at the Republican headquarters to tell of the attack and dropped in there this evening There were about ten sailors In the place all of them for Schmlti One of them tried to tear off my Crocker button and when I resisted he struck me on the mouth knocking out a front tooth and cutting my lip I grabbed him and two others hit me knocking me down on the floor The proprietor was not in a hurry to interfere After I was licked he came around In front of the bar and got between the men and me Then I got out Ahlstrands face was cut and bruised and the dlslodgment of the tooth left a large cavity He kept possession of his large Crocker button and still wears It openly and proudly I have been in business on the water front for fifteen years and this is the first time I have had any trouble at an election he said I am a ship owner as well as an owner of property in this city and I thought that I had a perfect right as an American cttlsen to wear any badge I pleased The men who assaulted me were sailor and I intend to swear out a warrant for one of them who I can recognize Last night on East street a I pasaed a group of hoodlums one of them told me that if I came out with a Crocker button again I would get licked The Scbmlts men on the water front are only too ready to us their fiats as arguments BIRTHS BOLLES In Oskland October 2T tbs wit of Charles Bolles of a
