No other business of importance was transacted. The council approved a long list of outstanding bills which were ordered paid. Assessments for building and repairing stone and cement sidewalks for half a dozen property owners were delivered to the council. They will confirmed on August 16. City Clerk L.

C. Andrews reported that the total amount of $138,382.01 has been drawn on the various city funds so far this year. The various amounts in this total follow: general fund, sewer fund. pavement and sidewalk fund, bridge and watercourse, street fund, $10,332. 72; park fund.

Mayor Hoffman named a special committee of aldermen to ascertain what could be done to remedy the faulty construction. Although built by a contractor under the supervision of the state department, the pavement was accepted by the city. Some repairs were made to it last year. A few months ago, property owners along the pavement held a series of conferences with the special committee. The aldermen agreed that the construction in the curbing was not a good job and sought means to have the state make the repairs.

There were legal obstacles to hinder this so the city charter was rso-toii to. Under the recently revised charter, all repairs to the paveirni 1 th city axe paid for out of the general city funds instead of being as-, sessed against the individual property owners as formerly. Repairs to the curbing on the Broadway pavement now are being made under the provision of the charter. If the pavement itself needs repairing later, the work will be done under the same provision-What property owners objected to was paying for an unsatisfactory job and repairs to it. The plan now being followed, it is believed, will be sat PICNIC SUPPLIES and lunch sets.

Party wants to leave city. jy31-a4x Three new teachers were appointed last night at a regular meeting of the Board of Education. As the result of the lengthy discussions concurrent with the selection of these new instructors the meeting turned out to be a lengthy one. Miss Margaret Wells, an Elmira girl, who is a graduate of Elmira College and the Simeons Commercial College At Boston, was assigned the position as an assistant in the commercial department at the Academy-. Both other appointments were for the vocational school.

Ransom" I. Libby of Montour Falls was appointed as instructor in the machine shop. He comes here from a big machine shop in Montour and is highly recommended as an expert in his line. Walter C. Smith, who at present is in the employ of the General Electric Company at Schenectady, was appointed instructor in the electrical department at the vocation school.

He is a graduate of Union College and his appointment is considered an excellent choice. Miss Mary Mangan, a teacher in School Xo. 1, was given a two weeks leave at the beginning of school so that she might finish an extended visit she is making in the west. A bill to the Board from Dr. Carey caused some discussion last night but was finally paid.

A boy in the vocational school was struck in the eye by a small piece of steel and needed treatment. The bill was sent to the board.
