has at last reached the stage when almost all that remains to be done is to work it into its flnalform for the big contest next Saturday All the preiiinjnary games have been played and the harjd nightly scrli images on the campus must now give way to signal practice and lighter work while the men heal thejf bruises and save themselves for the gridiron battle pf their lives The material has been sifted an 3 resifted until the pos siblltties number very few more tl an the eleven men who will go fnto the Initial iineup With but two probable ex ceptions the work of selection is iyer and the eleven is picked Right tackle andt left guard are the places where choice of two men is still to be matle It is a hsrdJlistinc tion to make in both cases The roaches are not at all satisfied with the work of Braly an Stow and yet of all the candidates they fare the best tted by weight experl ence and natural capabilities for he places Hansen is making the fight against Braly I tackle This is his fourth year as substitute in thept sition but he has never made the vafslty He is powerful and willing but he has never developed the idea of gettlns Into the interference which has made otber psllforhia tackles great Braly though fast with the ball is bettetat tennis than In the more strenuous game Until th last fe days Sani Stow has Jeen supposed totoe solidly fixed In his place at guard Now at the last moment he Is 11 tely to tie displaced by a freshman He has dUappointec the coaches and his friends by a wretched showing in the last week Ife ha been playing wth an injury It is irue but the coaches say It Is not serious enough to account for his slump FreBh man Stroud whqjs being given the chance weighs 185 stripped and Is strong and willing but of small experience Everywhere else the players aJre practically selected The right for guar ter back seems at last to have been won by Harry Hudson by superior strength and build and de fensiye play to that of the gritty but weaker Johnny More Stores kicking Is not so great a factor in the fight now that Overalls footwork has been developed When his team has the ball Hudson assumes command forms the Interference gets Into It himself and makes things move More can be held in reserve either as quarter back in case Hudson should be injured or have to go to end or as a substitute fullback The half backs will be Whipple and Mini Duden will complete the back field at full Sherman shifty and clever at handling kicks yill be among the reserves Whipple has the weight for a llne bucker and to offset little Lightweight Mini it was necessajry to give Whipple the other half rather than StJerman Mini has won his place by the best work of all trie backs Duden though injuries have kept him back this Season is the best and strongest for the other Jine smasher Mini will be relied upon to dart through small openings and slip past the tackles down the field while Whipple will be plunged through the line axiu scul iuj lung tuu i unp iuuu 10 invwuik little morer The California backs will be versatile On offense and fast Their chlef faults will be fumbling and poor work at handling kicks and their lesser faults lack of weight and power to back up the line In the line Gendottl fbr want of a better man will play center He not YW pggresslve to be placed against Stanfords Lee Who will outweigh him thirty pounds Overall is the reliance of the whole team He is not only expected to stop the plays aimed at his side of the line but to do the kicking to get into the interference and to carry tht bail That he can do all these things he has already proved Left Tackle Albertson can be relied upon to do all the work required of his position The Stanford backs will find him there when they launch a play at his place He will get into the interference he will take the ball for gains and get down the field on kicks Wombie the best end the Coast has developed fast aggressive and watchful as ever will be at his old place on the right end The other end will be Starr unless Dibblee recovers In time to take the place he has earned His ankle cost him the place at the last moment last year when he had it won and now for the second time he seems likely to be forced out of the game for the same cauee Starr has tbis season hardly lived up to his freshman promise butr is still a fast and clever end The whole line Is weak when it comes to charging The coaches realize this fault and have been giving the whole squad practice In starting both to make the players fast and to correct a tendency to offside playv S1 TEAM KASY FOR THE VARSITY Kanrsburgs Eleven Loses to Berkeley by Sixteen to Nothing TANFORD on its own campus and before a whole community eager for vengeance for last years score will meet Nevada at 3 oclock this afternoon and not only try to outdo Californias victory of 12 to 0 over Nevada last Wednesday but demonstrate the true possibilities of a varsity team that will go on the field weighing ll pounds to the man more than Nevada and oyer 10 pounds to the man more than California and playing much the same terrible destructive line game that the Sagebrushers themselves put up Trains leaving Third and Townsend streets at 1030 and 1130 oclock this forenoon and arriving here at 530 and 630 oclock in the evening will carry the principal visiting spectators Last seanon standing ankle deep in mud and water Stanfords heavy forwards floundered helplessly while Nevada wriggled through for gain after gain until the line was crossed The coaches are going to send into the game to day the best team the university affords Barring accidents which have occurred with annoying frequency all fall the personnel of the eleven will be identical with that which is to face California With one exception the same men will play as appeared in the recent contest with Reliance the change being at center where 195 pound Lee will In the jlst line up replace Hauverman 185 pounds although the latter may tget a chance during the match Hauverman has been passing tho ball nearly all season and the change at this time has occasioned considerable surprise Lee is the bulky redhairad Junior who has occupied the center position in the two big annual games having made it as a freshman His long experience combined with his weight has tipped the scale in his favor Both candidates are able to take good care of thfr position At right end Cooper is practicing again although his ankle is still botnering him some Tarpey the little freshman captain has been tried in the place with satisfying results notwithstanding the fact that he is totally unacauainttd with the duties of an end rush He may get a chance against Nevada if Cooper retires for he is fast at following punts fairly sure at tackling and when in possession of the ball is bound to leave devastation in his wake Kuhn has also a good chance of playing an end if a substitute is necessary Clark at the left extreme of the line is a fixture his work having been marked by steady progress throughout the season Traeger and McFadden are to appear afrtackle and Barn hisel and Thompson at guard The backs will be the effective four that have been working together all along Raitt at quarter Fsher and Hill halves and Slaker full with Smith Parker and Bansbach as subs Stanford has improved in defense of late The second eleven used to pry the varsi line apart at almost any part but this has been stopped in recent scrimmages It is an exception now when the big eleven fails to force a kick or to hold the other team on downs And the second eleven plays good football too better than Nevada played a year ago Nevadas favorite guards back formation should make little headway against the cardinals center trio Auburn halredLee and Barnhisel are able to nip such attempts in the bud and Thompson when once aroused is another hard proposition The varsity wtH base its hopes on straight football relying on bucking ability and a strong interfer ence rather than on feints or trick plays Keddie of Nevada Is primed for a place kick when the opportunity comes but whether he will be able to display his prowess at field goals is doubtful as the cardinal eleven are perfectly capable of hemming the Nevadans in their own territory for th greater part of the game Coaches Fickcrt and McMillan who witnessed the CaliforniaCalifornia Nevada match both expressed their belief yesterday that Stanford should down its opponents and by a bigger score than California did As near as can be determined the line up with stripped weights will be thus i Ssanford Position Weights BERKELEY November Californias eleven strong fast and together played as it pleased this afternoon with the Inex periended Mare Island Navy Yard team The score at theend of two fifteen minute halves Iti toO represented not what the varsity might have done but what It felt like piling up against the visitors For practice the game was poorer than the usual nightly play against the second eleven The actual weakness of th Val lejo eleven was notexpected PeteKars burg Has coached the players and was in the back field himself as full back but with few exceptions he had to play the game himself The team was heavy Lut In no condition California took the ball from the kick off and In a total of nineteen plays sent Mini across thp line for touchdown More kicked thp goal California again took the ball and In seven plays carried it to Vallejos fifteen yard line where a fumble and consequent failure to make trie distance lost the ball to the visitors who were thrown back at once and rorced to kick California brought the ball back frcm her fifty yard line in eight runs which finally landed Whipple across tha hoe but the touchdown was disallowed by irhni nnri tlio hall Efiven to allejo because the varglty backs started before the ball California tooK me Dan oBimi from Kaarsburgs punt to his thirtr live yard line and in seven runs had carried it to the two and a half yard line when the half ended In the second half California kicked off took the ball on Kaarsburgs return and in thirteen plays shoved Overall across for the second touchdown From Vallejo kick off the Varsity again took the ball an in thirteen more plays ran Wombie around left end for a touchdown losing and regaining the ball once during its Journey Wombles touchdown was made with fine Interference by UllUams From the kick California again took the ball immediately down to the visitors twelve yard line where by poor work the yar riy lost It on downs and Vallejo In three tries made their distance for the only time In the game The varsity had just le gained the leather when the half closed Vallejo got the bail but five times during the game and on all but one of these occasions was thrown back instantly Over all missed the last two tries a jui KaarsburK injured his left leg In the second half and had to leave the field Hudson wrenched his left ankle a serious matter with the Stanford game only a week off California tried carrying the ball seventyseventy eight times besides running in seven kicks advanced the ball 502 yards was thrown back once on fake kick losing five yards fumbled three times once losing the Dan ana once losiug uic jmj the ball twice on dowps received nrteen yards for off side play on the part of ber
