A A blacksnake of the racer variety gave Henry Williams, who resides on the mountains north of Altoona, the ride of his life yesterday. It was sunning itself in the road when "Williams' horse trampled almost on it. Instantly it coiled itself about the horse's leg, and a snort and a spring the terrified animal sprang forward and plunged down the mountain road at breakneck speed. Williams could do no more than keep the horse safely on the road, which ran along a deep ravine for some-distance. The snake held on for a mile, then loosed its coils and was left behind; but the horse ran for three miles before it could be brought to a halt.

The shortness of the Concord grape crop has begun to be felt in this market this week, a large number of the shippers reporting that they have only from one to five or pix days' packing left. The market advanced one-half cent to eight 'and one-half cents for this variety. Catw-bas are moving very slowly and there is no indication of any advance in the present prices at this time.

Niagaras are practically all shipped, although there are a few growers wfio are holding back their grapes of this variety in hope of getting a better price, but as many of them were shipped last week were over-ripe, some of the dealers have discontinued ordering. The extreme hot weather during the latter part of last week was alarming, but it is hoped that -the change that occurred the fore part of the present week was in time to prevent the heat from reaching into the boxes in which I are now stored large quantities of fine grapes, and that the stems have not become so dry as to cause "rattling." I Markets in the large cities continue low, although some of them have shown a slight advance within a few-days on Concords. The Brocton district reports about 60 per cent, of its crop shipped. Charles Everest Sinsabaugh, her son, four days old, and the first member' of the fifth generation. Mrs. Pheobe Beardsley, the great, great grandmother, still has an active mind, it is said, and takes a lively in- i terest in current events. She is, how ever, rather weak physically. Mrs. William Amos died at her home here yesterday aged seventy-one years. Mrs. Amos, whose maiden name was Harriet Custer, was born in Dansville; she was married in Geneseo. and her golden wedding anniversary was celebrated less than a year ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Amos removed to this village from Geneseo. about ten years ago. She was among the most esteemed women of this village.

Mrs. Amos leaves her husband with a sen, Harold Amos of T'tica, and two daughters. Mrs. Charles Kausch of this vilage and Mrs. Frank Wemmet of Springv-ille.

The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at the family home, the Rev. C. Woods, pastor of the M. E. Church of which Sirs.

Amos was a member officiating. BRIDGE COLLAPSES; BUYER TUMBLES (Special to The Star-Gazette.) Canisteo, Oct. 23. Former Highway Commissioner James E. Wilson was injured badly yesterday by the collapse of a bridge he was crossing.

The bridge spans the Canisteo River near the Walso farm and is a private structure. Mr. Wilson had been buying cattle and was hardly on the bridge when it collapsed, dropping him into the river, a distance of 14 feet. Although Mr. Wilson was not injured seriously he was bruised badly and suffered from the shock.

The horse escaped uninjured. The water is shallow at this point and fortunately there was no danger, from drowning. Seme sort of hoodoo seems to be following Mr. Wilson. M'hiie out buying cattle a few weeks ago he fell from a fence and broke thumb and also sprained his wrist.

William Halpin, a ten-year-old lad, whose parents reside in Mildred, was brought to the Packer Hospital Tuesday night, with a 22-calibre bullet lodged behind the breast bone. Ithaca. Oct. 23. Judge Blood will today hear the applications of about 30 Cornell men whose right to be registered was challenged by the. election boards to have their names enrolled.

The contention of the boards was that the men are students of the university and are not entitled to register in Ithaca, not having gained a legal residence. Oct. 23 Clarence Davis narrowly escaped death yesterday afternoon while felling trees in the George Van-Skiver woods.

Iu attempting to dodge a falling tree Davis misjudged the distance and the tree struck, him a glancing blow on the head cutting a severe gash and knocking him unconscious. He was hastily brought to this village and Dr. Whiting summoned. Companions of Davis who saw the accident say that had the tree struck him squarely on the head it would have killed him outright. His injuries are not serious.
