to be used on the old Drum farm on the north side of the Yuba and others are to come as soon as they can be had Work all along the line Is to be crowded as rapidly as the necessary machinery can be Beeny tract six miles east of town on the south side of the Yuba river and has had a force of men and a drill at work for some time An Orovllle correspondent says The Thunder Mountain Mining Company which Is operating the old Butterfly mine In Morris ravine this county on the strength of a working bond obtained from the owners has lately made a change In the number of miners employed and the length of shift The Butterfly is a gravel drift mine About four months ago hard rock was encountered and an uprise made to escape it It was discovered to be merely a rim of bed rock with gravel beyond and after prospecting work wds commenced on an Inclined tunnel through the rim rok They have about seven ty flve feet further to go to pass through the rock Last week the number of men was limited to one a shift and the size of the tunnel will be decreased accordingly Robinson a miner of Plumas county has recently made a find that according to local opinion should hae been made years ago Robinson has run a tunnel from Dead wood creek which was mined long ago Into the hillside something over 200 feet and struck the long lost channel Last week he brought to Qulncy a bar of gold worth 250 and also a number of specimens ranging In value from 60 cents to 15 Twenty two gold dredgers are working in the valley of the Feather river adjacent to Orovllle according to the Mercury Parties have been looking up some of the old mines of Ophlr District and as we understand there is a fair show of two of them starting up In the near future namely The Eureka and the June Bug The Eureka Is the west extension of the well known Hathaway owned by San Francisco parties and now filled with water on account of the rig not being able to do the hoisting of both water and ore The Eureka Is owned by George Knoff who proved the value and continuance of the pay chute by extracting ore through one of the levels of the Hathaway When forced to quit on account of water he went on the surface and by sinking a 90 foot shaft and drifting he proved the chute to be regular both In pitch and value of ore While working through the Hathaway shaft he extracted a total of 254 tons of ore which turned out In the mill 4093 and the sulphurets netted 3462 the assay value of sulphurets being for two different lots In sller 70 and 106 ounces respectively and running In gold from 250 to 304 ounces The ledge as far as has been developed will average all the way from 20 Inches to two feet Tbe ore worked from the top amounted to 140 tons the battery returns being 31120 and the sulphurets netting 378 27 after paying all expenses the assay value of sulphurets being 2940 ounces of silver and two ounces of gold Placer Herald The contract for the tunnel on the old Alta Callfornla gravel claim recently bonded by Messrs Root Helsner and San Francisco menr has been let It lit expected that It will require at least three months to run the 800 feet designated In the contract The tunnel at Its lowest depth will be 143 feet below the surface and twenty three feet it Is estimated below the gold bearing channel This will enable the company to thoroughly explore and develop the claim which is believed to be rich in gold Grass Valley Union Operations are to be started at once by Jameson on two lime kilns near Tebachapl which will be supplied from a large deposit of limestone owned by him there This deposit is described as a mountain of limestone of superior quality the side of which Is 1000 feet vertical height Recent reports of the sate of the Golden Cross vmine near Hedges San Diego county were apparently without foundation aa Receiver Pauly states that tbe company has not been negotiating for the disposal of Its property Tbe Golden Cross Is one of the big properties In this end of tbe big gold strike near Copper mountain continues to be the talk of this section Other prospects In the Immediate vicinity are looking good and the future of this wonderful gold belt is assured Prescott Journal Miner During the past year the Tombstone Consolidated Company has spent nearly 31000000 In gettlngthe old mines around Tombstone in shape for work A report ha reached town that a two foot vein of free gold of seeming high value has been struck In the Rainbow mine In the Bradshaw mountain section The property is being operated by the Bowman brothers Journal Miner A great strike was made yesterday on the mine owned by Greene Henry Wood and others eighteen miles north of Phoenix Just a little below the 100 foot level an elghteen lnch vein was dlscoered the wealth of which has been shown by a fair assay to be 3115 in gold and twenty five ounces of silver Though the discovery of the vein was accidental It was not unlooked for The surface Indications gave Mr Wood a hope of something like It The outcropplngs were narrow ledges of rock set up on edge Work was begun on one of them and at a depth It was found to be widening and others were found to be joining It Indicating that the saw teeth on the surface were getting together under the ground There was no Indication however of the particular vein discovered yesterday but the Juncture of It with the vein upon which the work was being done was characteristic of the discoveries that had previously been made proving a general convention of the ledges In the neighborhood It Is now thought that with greater depth there will be a widening of the vein The owners of the mines have not the nerve to hope that it will Increase in richness They had found some very good ore before that some that went as high as 341 Arizora Republican June 14th In order to avoid fires In the future a tunnel 7000 feet In length Is to be run in the United Verde mine beginning at the mill site well down the Verde river Nevada Samples of ore
