that the Colton securities were received by the California Safe Deposit and Trust Company on June 1 1903 and that It was decided to use them because the liank needed the money Brown and Trtadwell discussed the matter In ex tenso and it was determined that Treadwell should take tho Colton securities and uaing them as collateral raise two separate loans This was done because It was thought desirable not to have all the Colton securities In one bank Treadwell got a go between Ounn a broker to dispose of one lot Ounn raised 150 000 from the Italian American Bank and because Treadwell did not want to sign his name to the note Ounn hunted up A Murphy and Murphy loaned his name for the purpose If we pro these fails we shall have proved that Treadwell statement urnlvr oath before the San Kranclsce will for the current year pay a total tax of II 0 on each 10O valuation If the estimates made by Harry Scott member of the State Board of Equalization are well founded The city and county tax rate has already been fixed at 1 60 and Scott who was yesterday engaged in taking oft flgurea from the books of the County Assessor gave It a his opinion that the Stat rate would be 40 cents Action will In all probability be taken by the State Board to establish the rate for State purposes at a meeting to be held September Ith The last time we did any figuring on the State rate said Scott yesterday we found that It would require a tax ot nearly 40 cents and In all probability that figure will be Hied by the Board It that rate Is established It will be the lowest State rate for many years Totats aa to the assessment of the property In the different counties indicate a wonderful growth throughout the State In round numbers the Increase over last year la 109 000000 The greatest proportion of Increase comes from San Francisco and tha total assessed value of the State will not be far from 12000000000 It would appear that the tendency of the State rate Is downward while that of the municipal rate Is In the opposite direction The municipal rate for the ear 1903 was II 071 for 104 111 for 1905 1164 for ISOtt 11322 for 1907 1 415 and for 190S It Is 1150 The taie rate for 1903 was 56 I cents for 1904 535 cents ror 1905 49 cents for 1S0 47 cents for 1907 44 fi cents and for 1908 It will probably be 40 cents The total tax Tate paid by Son Francisco property bwners was Tor 1903 11637 for 1904 It 656 for 1905 12 13 for 1906 1179 for 1907 1115 and for 190S II 90 I estimated If the forty cent Stato rate for this year prevails the tax rate paid Jrlll be the largest since 1906 when tho total rate was 12 13 Of thl 1 14 waa for city and county purposes while the State tax was 43 cents Screams Arouse Neighborhood and the Miscreant Is Captured FRIGHT CAUSES
