iilythe and not Thomas BIythe was born at Tarrin in Wales The Blythea originally came from Frodsham in the early part of the seventeenth century That Is where my fathers father was born and he ran a planing mill and cheese factory there My father was always gay a great man for horses and dogs and he would fight on any occasion too I bare seen him beat horse often He was head strong and wanted everything his own vray but still he was good to me My mothers maiden name was Mary Woods and that my father was married to her I have the certificate to prove There were two children by this marriage myself and my brother Edward Edwin who is a couple of years older than I and in England now As my father was a great man to take I the ladies about 1 recollect seeing him driving on several amerem occasions wun them though I was but a little boy I recollect in particular one occasion whsn be took Susan Morris who afterward saw him off on the ship when he was deported wMy father moved to Windsor where he was a confectioner and baker for several years He was also at Chester for awhile at Stafford and at other places My mother died after she had bees married seven years After this my father continued as before constantly changing about Once be ran a dairy He changed his business often Finally he went to London At length by reason of lita many escapades ha was arrested for felony the charge being bigamy He was tried and convicted Some of the facts in the case brought oaf by my researches are shown in different legal documents copies of which I and my attorneys possess This is one take care of me and my botber andshedidsofora time but at length she ran away and were left two little waifs uncared for Then they took us tothi union and finally to the work ioose where we remained for a good while Pushed and buffeted about from time to time and earning a subsistence as best we could we both at length became masters of trades learned that of a brass finisher and having crown to man hood married and now have a large fam ily My brother drifted away and went to sea and was gone twenty years Of conrse he came home in the meantime many times and kept thinking all the time that he would find my father for both he and I were on the lookout for him He didnt do it however and EnalTy I set out to make Inquiries myself I visited Liverpool London and manyc ther places going at intervals as I had time and got some traces of where he had formerly been and of his ways At length nearly ten years ago after had searched in many nlaces the British Consuf here sent to Liverpool and advertised for the next of Jan stating that a man of the name oi BIythe had died in San Francisco a millionaire The advertisement came to the notice of Henry Thompson an attorney and he Visited the old places where my father had been in London and made inquiries and there was told that there were heirs that I was one of them and that I had been there myself to inquire about my father Thereupon Mr Thompson got my address and came to see me Both my brothers and myself engaged him on a percentage to come to San Francisco and represent us Thompson came and remained and sent us a great many letters as to how the case was progressing Finally we were asked to forward certain evidence but the Consular charges were 50 and we did not have the money So we could not forward it then In the meantime we continued to receive letters stating that our case was going on all right It never seemed however to reach the end that we had been assured was near at hand Finally I said I would go myself and find out about it Fancy my surprise therefore when on my arrival here and inquiring about the case I was told that my brother and myself had not been represented at all in the hearing Here were the Williamses the Gypsy Blythes and the scores of others who had been here and were represented at the trial The case had been decided awarding the vast estate to the young woman known as Florence BIythe but my brother and myself who were actually the lawful sons had not been heard at alL The great case had gone on and been decided without us I was thunderstruck I met Attorney Thompson and asked him about it in unfeigned surprise He merely said that it was because we had not paid 50 to the ConsnL But how Mr Thompson was prevented during all these years from so much as lifting a hand in aid of us especially when he had originally come over for us the public can judge as well as I have now engaged other lawyers to advocate our interests and have no fear but what our rights will be established I have not called on Mrs Florence BIythe Hinckley and do not intend to Different people have suggested it but I see no good reason for doing so ho when we get our facts in the pabbc as well as the courts must judge whether our claim is not all that we assert Mr BIythe is very earnest in his utterances He says that he feels sure that he and his brother will ere long be possessed of the BIythe fortune NOTHING NEW The Bay City Market In the Lead This Tear at TJsnal Mark Strouse the proprietor of the Bay City Market 1138 to 1146 Market street who is the acknowledged leader of the in Trouble in an Oakland Court Samuel A Speddy a well known resi dent of Alameda played for high stakes and it seems that he tost and new he is likely to go to jail If the charges that were made against him in the Oakland Superior Court yesterday are true he ia indeed in a serious predicament All sorts of charges of fraud Are made against him under oath and he has been commanded to appear before the Probate Court and give an explanation According to the affidavits on file Mr Epeddy was a very speedy man He had a very intimate friend in the person of James A Campbell who was living at his home in Alameda Mr Campbell had no relatives on this coast and indeed the Speddys were his only close friends Last June he was taken ill and died A short time after Mr Speddy appeared the Alameda County Superior Court with an application to be appointed administrator of the estate of James A Campbell deceased He represented to the court that he was a nephew of the deceased and that he was entitled to administer on tbe estate His application was granted and then Speddy got possession of 23000 left by the deceased This money was on deposit in the San Francisco Savings Union A few weeks ago the administrator went East and hunted up Campbells relatives He found Ahaa TVenger Nancy Bryan Robert Bryan Mary Shaef fer Lucian Bryan and James Bryan all heirs living in Philadelphia Speddy made it his business to see them and explain the situation He pictured to them how Campbell had died at his home and how he had given away every bit of his estate just prior to his death He represented to the heirs that Campbell just before he died handed his bank book to Mrs Speddy and said Take it because you know my wishes She took the bank book and kept it for a time Mr Speddy next produced a copy of an alleged will which he claimed had been left by Campbell By the terms of this document Mrs Speddy was given the entire estate The administrator after mak ing all these statements and showing what a cinch he thought he had on the money said that order to avoid troube and litigation his wife would call everything square if she was allowed to take 5000 out of the estate According to his story she was willing to give up a big claim against 23 000 order to get 5000 in cash The tale seemed to be such a queer one that the heirs got together in Philadelphia and hired a lawyer who attempted to do business with the administrator All this time Speddy was making threats that if a compromise was not arranged then his wife would take the whole business and the heirs would get nothing The lawyer soon learned that the man from Alameda was trying to runs big bluff and he was called Speddy saw that he could not make the deal go so he returned to his home In the meantime the heirs had communicated with the Public Administrator of Alameda connty and asked him to hnnt up matters and take charge of the estate Attorney Samuel Hall was engaged to get at the truth of the matter and he soon learned that Speddy was no relation ofthe deceased It was also ascertained that Campbell did not leave a will and that the whole thing was a gigantic fraud Justus soon as these facts were made known the heirs took action and as a result a dozen affidavits were filed in court yesterday In these documents the heirs re late the interviews that took place in Philadelphia when Speddy tried to make the deal to get the 5000 He is accused of being a conspirator and a fraud In other words it is openly charged that he formed a plan to loot the estate The Public Administrator appeals to tbe court at tbe request of the heirs to have the whole matter thoroughly investigated and to find that Speddy has acted contrary to the best interests of tbe estate Then it is asked that he be removed from office and such other action be taken as the court deems Vise in the premises This seems to be tbVbeginning of a verv sensational case when tbe matter is heard in court a week from next Tuesday Mr Speddy will have to give a full ex planation of his conduct It is said that he still has the 23000 on hand PORTFOLIO C0VEES THE C0BBECT THING FOB THE ABT SEBIES A Choice of Two Tery Neat Oakland will receive a Christmas present when he arrives in New York in a few days which will astonish him It will be in the nature of a telegram which will read something like this Your wife has sued you for a divorce and a division of the property When Mr Hughes left home he did not have the least suspicion that there was anything out of the way and he expected to have a gay old time and return when he got ready His plans were earned out to theletter but the trouble was that his wife found them out ow that is the reason there is such a sensation the aristocratic section by the lakeside in Oakland Mr and Mrs Hughes lived in a handsome home at 1375 Madison street The latter is a sister of Mrs Sumner Bag bee who lives at 146 Lake street Oakland The Hughes and the Bugbees move in the firstsocieiy circles in Oakland and even ot late they have been prominent in social affairs The gossips therefore take great delight in dishing up the sensational cae whenever opportunity is offered The complaint for a divorce was filed in the Alameda Superior Court Tester day afternoon The announcement that tbe suit had been brought did not create any great amount of surprise among those who were familiar with the home life of Mr and Mrs Hughes The charges made in the document are quite sensational It is to be inferred from the present condition of affairs that the capitalist has eloped As a matter of fact it is not known whether heieally intends to return to his wife 8nd five children Mrs Hughes takes the matter in a very dignified way She says that she has nothing to hide and is free to say that she has sued her husband for a divorce on the ground oi infidelity She asserts that she is Justified in her course by reason of recent developments Some four years ago Mrs Hughes decided to have a governess in the family and she employed a very pretty young girl in San Francisco who gave great satisfaction Mr Hughes was especially grati6ed over the engagement and the young lady was installed as a member of the family She worked hard with the children and they learned to love her About a year ago it was noticed that the gram merchant took a deep interest in the governess and was always ready to see that she got everything she wanted just like the rest of tbe family Mr Hughes used to take little trips into the country in order to look after bis business affaira It was noticed that about the times he went on these little trips the pretty governess got a vacation for the purpose of visiting her relatives The actions of the merchant soon became the talk of tbe neighborhood and his love for the lady was apparent to almost everybody except Mrs Hughes It was hard for her to suspect that the girl she had brought into her borne and learned to love bad betrayed her and won away her husband Why said Mrs Hughes last night I could not believe it She was such a lovely girl and so pretty and we all thought so much of her But now that I know the truth things have chanzed Mr Hughes was getting along verv nicely with his love affair when he determined to take a trip abroad He thought that his business interests required him to go to Europe and then be thought that he would make a stop in England in order to see his aged mother On September 2d he bid goodbye to home and family and the pretty governess and started for the Hast on his way to Europe Six days later the governess had very jnreent business that reqm ed her to get a leave of absence For the first time Mrs Hughes commenced to get suspicious and ahe had reason to believe that her husband had a companion on his trip across the water and on his tour through the continent Now was the time to act and she consulted some of her best friends as to the course she should pursue It was resolved that she should hire detectives in Liverpool and have them as certain if Mr Huehes was traveling alone The steamer Umbria left Liverpool on December 12th and Mr Hughes was a passenger on it bound Jor Sew York He was not alone hut on the contrary he was accompanied by a very pretty female companion At least that was what a cablegram received by Mrs Hughes stated When Mr Hughes arrives in 2ew York he will be met by detectives who will watch him closely Mrs Hughes told the story last night about tbe sailing of the steamer which shows that she is keeping pretty well posted on what her husband is doing When tbe complaint was presented to Judge Ogden in the Oakland Superior Unrt yesterday he read it over carefully and then he issued a restraining order which prevents the husband from transferring or disposing of any of his property Until the further order ot the court Then again the order was made that Mrs Hughes should have exclusive pdsession 61 the mansion on Madison street for Sheriff STRANGE STABBING JAMES KAVANAUGH CUT BADLY His Assailant Hade His Escape After the Affray Was Oyer A serious stabbing affray occurred at the corner of Second and Minna streets yesterday afternoon The victim was James Kavanaugh a young man who lives at 8 Nassau street The man who did the cutting ia supposed to be an Italian named Frank Toraeto who has been employed in A LenitUs fruit store on Second street near Minna The story of the affray as told by Kavanaugh and others who were in the neighborhood is to the effect tbat he was standing on the corner ot Ecker and Jessie streets when he was approached by an Italian who asked Kavanaugh if he could read English The latter replied in the affirmative The Italian requested EtavanaugH to ac eompany him to his lodging house on Minna street and read a letter he had Jast received The young fellow went there and Claims that after they had entered the house the Italian made a vicious assault upon him Kavanaugh fought desperately to avoid the knife which his assailant was using with terrible effect and at last succeeded I in reaching the street He says that he cannot explain the unprovoked attack on anv other grounds than that the Italian was insane As soon as the pair reached the street the assailant ran rapidly down Minna street toward first ana atsappearea Kavanaughs condition was soo discovered and he was taken to a druz store and from there to the receiving hospital His injuries consist of a dangerous atab in the left breast and various cuts about the hands and lower part of the boly The hosp tal surgeons believe tbat he will recover As soon as word of the stabbing reached the police station several ofheers were immediately detailed to investigate There was no trace of Torneto to be fonnd and his
