that bar innocence may be established The tlngnlar case baa now resolved itself down to two rropositloni the first one of Which Is that James WrTrarers editor ef the West Oakland Bun openly accuses his stepmother of poisoning his father The second proposition Is that Mrs Traven accuses her stepson James of attempt ins to poison his father These are very intemting charges to be made when Cap tain Travers has only been in his grave a ireek JlChsokici reporter called upon Mrs Irsvert again yesterday and she declared thit the was ready to make a clean breut bf all she knew concerning her accnsers In the first place I want It distinctly understood said Mrs Travers that I never said I belleTed my husband was poisoned On the contrary 1 know he was not poisoned The most scandalous charges hare order to please him 1 did as he suggested and the bottle is now at the i drug store and will be turned over to a chemist lor analysis When 1 returned Mr Travers said Mamma yon have done right If anything is said about poison after I am dead yon will have the bottle as proof Captain Travers was not satisfied to let the matter rest but continually spoke about that bottle being tampered with because it was the one that was used at midnight He called two of his Intimate friends to his side and confided to them his suspicions that his son bad tried to poiaon him These witnesses erenow ready to into court and testify I have told the ovs they had better be careful and it might be well for them to inquire who their mother was When it is said that Captain TraTers had three wives that is not true He was divorced from his first wife who ie now Mrs Parker of Ban Francisco I was Mis second wife I asked him once bout the mother of the children and he told me that I was treading on dangerous house of the old Clay street rail road on Clay and Leavenworth streets turns out to be a myth It was based on the fact that abont three weeks ago Mr Cook a carpenter who was employed to board up some broken windows found a package which had apparently been thrown through one of the windows It contained nineteen counterlelt silver dollars a counterfeit hall dollar and a spurious quarter He took the package to the Sub Treasury where It has been ever since The Treasury officials whose names were mentioned in the printed story say that there was no other evidence ot the presence of counterfeiters in the old power house and that it was so apparent that the peerage had been merely thrown through the window that the matter was not even worth the trouble of Investigating for Tardy Taxpayers The particularly to the rnanu facturers and merchants of California to know that at the present time there are Six railroad sIn this republic which are either in construction or their construction contempts ted in the near future all having the Pacific coast of Mexico as their western terminus Heretofore all the railroads which haTe been built in this country haTe either started at the Bio Grande with the City of Mexico at their objective point or have been built from the interior to the Gulf of Mexico These lines have opened up the trade of Mexico to all of the United States east Ot the Kocky mountains the Atlantic seaboard and Europe but thus far no railroad has ever touched the Pacific ocean Anyone having an interest in this subject can trace upon any msp of Mexico the railway lines which in the space of a Tery few yean will gife to California a supremacy orer two thirds of the growing trade of this country The Tehauntepec Baiiroad a Government enterprise now being pushed to completion will span the Mexican lith mus commencing at the port of Coatzv coaieos on the Qnlf of Mexico near the southern extremity of the State of Vera Cruz and thence traversing Westward through the States of Vera Cruz and Osx aca to the port ot Salina Cruz on the Pacific The contract for the construction ol this line calls for its completion in 1893 This railroad has recently come idto prominence from a rumor to the effect that Jay Gould and Huntington had failed in an attempt to purchase it from the Mexicsn Government The line when completed will give a competing route between the Atlantic and Pacific unless Messrs Gould and Huntington acquire ownenmp ana control its operations A little farther to the north the Inter oceanic Baiiroad having a line now in operation from this city to the port oi veracTuz is now at wore extending its line southerly to Aoapulca The tine wnen couipieieu im run ltoih toe port of Vera Crnz westerly through the State of the samename the State of Pacific Baiiroad is extending its line southerly from the City of Mexico into the State of Morelos and thence through the State of Guerrero to the port of Palizada its Pacific terminus The entire length of this road is aaid to be only 280 miles with easy grades and when completed and operated on business principles should make cheap route for the transportation of commodities between this city and 8an Francisco Next to the northward is tbe extension of the road now running from Manzaniilo to Collma This extension which will be completed through to Guadalajara during the coming year will connect with the Mexican Central at the latter city giving a through rail line from the Cut of Mexico westerly through the Federal district and the northeast corner of tbe State oiMichlocan to Irapuato Jn the State of Guanajuato over the Mexican Central Railway thence continuing westerly over a branch of the same road to Xloadalajira in the State of Jalisco and thence southerly through the State ot Jalisco and Colima to the port of Man zanillo The Monterey and Mexican Gulf Railroad running from Tampico through the States of Tsmaulipas and Nnevo Leon to Vehadilo on the line of the Mexican In temaclon Railway is now surveying for an extension of its road to bierra Alojada in the State of Coahuila with the ulti mate Tie iw of continuing its line through toMazatlan Finally the Mexican Northern Pacific now under contract for construction com mences at Denting the junction of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fa wlti the Southern Pacific Company and will run thence southerly through the State and city of Chihuahua thence westerly into the State of Sinaloa passing northwest through the far famed Xopolobampo country to nay mas in the State of Sonera It is noticeable that in meet ing stated that the bbjeetof the assemrj blage was to take steps to defeat the atreet extensipn schemes for which Mission owners were to be assessed He then nominated Jefferson James for presiding officer Mr James in his remarks recommended that st ps should be taken to get rid of the commissioners He informed those present thet he and many others Jcnew nothing of this asseesment until three days ago and was then informed by John Center who told him how the entire Mission waa to be assessed and made liable for the proposed extension proceedings Mr James advised dispassionate action and also adyo csted that legsl means should betaken He thought that the present Board of Supervisors was not responsible Captain Smith called attention to the fact thst in tome Instances assessments were 33 per cent higher in some places than others In other cases a difference of even 100 percent was noticeable As for damsges he was informed that tome owners bad been allowed at high as 200 per cent more than others for the Itnd taken and he believed that this disparity was due to a pull which some owners had with the commissioners Ayers quoted Thomas Magee the real estate expert whom he said bad repeatedly denounced these commissions as steals He called attention the SeventeenthSeventeenth street fight and while they had acquiesced in the Supervisors rulings and accepted the reductions they intended to draw the line on Sixteenth and other similar jobs and now fight them to the bitter end A Van Dazer told how he had been taxed for the opening of streets in the Laguna survey Van Ness avenue and others the total expense there for opening half a dozen streets being but 162000 while 343000 is demanded by the SixteenthSixteenth street commissioners to rnn a street orer a goat hill He called attention to the amount of 9600 allowed Al Rai ch for 40x80 feet of his lot 40x93 which was Talned at 750 for tbe land by the City Assessor and 300 for his house or a total valuation of 1550 The commissioners had taken 8004 rqaare feet and allowed Mr BaiaCh 3 20 per square foot or 9600 and At torney Van Duzer said that Mr Balsch would be the meanest man living If he did not make the commissioners a present of at least 2000 or 3000 The total amount allowed for land waa 270783 83 and 71000 for salaries 8hoaldthe tax payers uemand that the Supervisors reject the report it would leave a cloud on theirproperty He thereupon quoted the law on these street extensions and declared that the Supervisors bad the power to modify the assessment They could reduce It 75 per cent They can also remove the commissioners for cause and could find cause enough in Kaiachs damage allowance The City and County Attorney according to the law may at any time proceed against and remove all officers or commissioners for cause He has Mr Van Duzer said cause enough as Commissioners Clunie McMahon and Painter were putting their hands Into the property owners pockets by giving ftaisch and others exorbitant amounts Mr Van Duzer had asked one of the com misiloners when told that 343000 was asked who got the boodle and was told that it was none of his business He also received a similar reply for an itemized account of the sums demanded for the expenses of the commission He proposed however to make It his business An advisory committee to get further information andalao which were adopted Whibsas The last Board of Supervisors projected ad extension of Sixteenth street from Castro street westward laid ont a district for the expense thereof and appointed a commission to acquire title to tbe land within the lines of said proposed extension and to eases the costs on the district named and whereas the said commissioners have filed their report and assessment with the honorable Hoard of Supervisors and whereas la our opinion the projected extension of Sixteenth street is tueles and not wanted that it is impracticable and that if carried out would bs illegal unjust and oppressive it is impracticable tor ihe grade of the proposed street would forbid any travel over its bo vehicles could paw over it with safety It never could becom a driveway by nrsons driving for pleasure tbe grade of the proposed Street ior a distance of 10OO feet is over 20 per cent loaded teams would nevir MnorAtii even it there was freizht to be earned over it and there is no prospect that any freight would bs needed in that direction for the next generation ana wnereaSrtne property owners in a great part of the immense district assessed have no interest in andwill derive no benefit
