Pittsburgh's Barry Bonds had a fourth-inning double to extend his hitting streak through eight games. The Pirates had won four of their previous six games. Elmira Continued from Page 1C Flores to strike out on a low fastball, Gary Mota hit a slow roller to Grant. Grant bobbled the ball, which sailed over the head of first baseman Fried man as Thompson scored. Chris Hatcher singled in Smith and Steve Veit got his second double of the game, scoring Mota and Hatcher and giving the Astros a 4-1 lead.

EOT). Dave Stieb (9-2) starts for American League East-leading Toronto against second-place Boston and Was Gardner (1-3). STATS In Tim Leary's nine losses this season, the New York Yankees have scored 12 runs. Chicago Cubs rekevers Lea Lancaster and Paul Assenmacher have stowed IS of 45 Inherited runners to score Oakland 32-4 when scoring first, 10-17 when opponents score first. STREAKS Baltimore slopped Its five-game skid Grant opened the inning by being patient and drawing a walk and was followed John Lammon, who also walked.

With one out, Jose Lora got his first hit of the season, ripping a two-run triple to right-center, which rolled to the wall. Graham then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Lora and tying the game. Elmira manufactured its first run when shortstop Randy Brown walked, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and came home on an error. But the real story was the Pioneers' pitching. Santiago seemed to cruise through the first inning and got out of a jam in the second, but Grant's error seemed to shake him up.

So, with one out in the third, Elmira manager Mike Verdi decided to pull the plug on the 19-year old lefthander. "He let his concentration wander," Verdi said. "He got to thinking about that error, so I just decided to get him out of there." Verdi called upon Silverio Santamaria, who simply went about the business of closing the door on the Astros and allowing the Pioneers to stay close. Then, with the tying run at first in the eighth inning, Verdi listened to what his bullpen catcher Joe Demus told him. "We had two kids out there warming up and I didn't know anything about either one of them," Verdi said.

"I just asked Joe who was throwing the best. He told me and that's who came in." Demus' prescription was Tim Smith, who only arrived in Elmira late Sunday. Smith's answer was striking out the first two batters he faced in the eighth and striking out the side in the ninth. "We're in first place for a day and that feels Just great," Verdi said.
