Eva M. Smith, 74, of 329 N. 7th Allentown, a volunteer at the Good Shepherd Home for more than 20 years, died Monday in Sacred Heart Hospital. She was the widow of Samuel C. Smith, who died in 1959.

Mrs. Smith, known as "Mom" by affiliates of Good Shepherd, played Santa Claus at the home each year by providing gifts for all the residents and staff, sometimes as many as 200. To meet her quota, she solicited items from department stores, collected "leftover" gifts from friends, gathered and restored old jewelry and made up any deficit herself. "It isn't always easy to get a gift together for everyone," she said, "But somehow, some way, I always seem to manage." Each month she would send the home a large sheet cake from Grim's Bakery with all the month's birthdays listed in script icing on top of the cake. "Mom," honored at the Good Shepherd Home's annual Winter Ball in 1971 for the many services she performed throughout the years, was surprised that someone would "tell on her," saying it was she who was the happiest through these "small gifts." She attributes the beginnings of her services to a story that her daughter then a nurse at Allentown Hospital told of a young man from the home who had no arms.

The nurses cut his meat which he then fed himself with his feet. "It started me to thinking how I could help these people less fortunate than ourselves," she said.
