STAR-GAZETTE Elmira, N.Y, eMIa Notices' ANNOUNCEMENTS Uclans, Irish May Hit Top Baylor, which had stunned Sy SEPTEMBER 26 EVENING Associated Press i A new teen-age battery at Notre Dame and a couple of architects of the "big bomb" at UCLA are sticking their noses into what was supposed to be a private war between Alabama and Michigan State for the season's top college football honors. The Fighting Irish haven't had a national champion since 1949 and the Bruins from the West Coast have never been No. 1, although a Rose Bowl victory save them fourth last year, but both must be rated powerful title threats on the basis of tneir explosive performances Satur-dav. UCLA, which crushed Pittsburgh the week before, toyed with a Syracuse team ratea ine best in the East and 20 pounds heavier to the man in winning 31-12. Junior Quarterback Gary Beban.

a deadlv nasser. found an ideal target in Buzz Busby, a lS-vear-old sophomore who runs 100 yards in 9.4 seconds, hitting him on long bombs. At South Bend, the Irish discovered another combination In Terry Hanratty, 18-year-old quarterback, and Jim Seymour, 19-year-old receiver, who clicked off passes of 84, 39 and seven yards in beating Purdue 24-14. Just as UCLA's quick defenders stopped Syracuse's formidable Floyd Little, holding him to 20 yards, so did Notre Dame cool off Purdue's Bob Griese, who beat the Irish the year before. Both top-ranked Michigan State and third-rated Alabama, with UCLA sandwiched between in last week's poll, won' convincingly, although against less awesome opposition.

The Spartans turned loose a race horse backfield of Jim Kaye, Dwight Lee, Clint Jones and Bob Apisa in smashing Penn State 42-8 and Alabama, national champion the last two years, trampled Louisiana Tech 84-0. Other teams fa last week's Top Ten except seventh-ranked Purdue and lOth-rated Baylor won rather handily. nKyittTrrcrmng (The tv schedule art printed In ac cordance with Information provided by the station themselves.)
