SPORTS Star-Gazette. Sunday. July 15. 1990 3C rrors prove cosily as Astros nip Elmira Star-Gazette bench-clearing brawl in the top of the first inning. After a 10-minute delay, Pioneer second baseman Jeff Limoncelli, an Elmira native, and Auburn starter Steve Powers were ejected.

In the Astros' second inning, Bryan Smith and Tony Gilmore both reached on booted ground balls. Smith scored on a ground-out and Vince Roman then doubled in Gilmore. Smith stole third and scored on wild pitch for 3-1 lead. The Pioneers tied the game in the third when Tim Davis singled and scored on Jeff McNeely's two-out triple. John Lammon singled in McNeely and Randy Brown followed with a hit but Jose Lora grounded out to end the inning.

The Astros scored the eventual winning run against Pioneers re-lievr Silverio Santamaria (1-2) in the fifth. With two outs, Gary Mota singled, stole second and scored on Steve Veit's RBI-single. The Astros stole six bases in the game. The brawl erupted when Powers walked Willie Dukes with one out in the first, as the final two pitches were quite high and inside. According to an Auburn reporter, Limoncelli then charged the mound from the on-deck circle as Dukes trotted to first base.

Both benches and bullpens emptied. Two unidentified Auburn pitchers, not in uniform, left the grandstand to participate. Both were eligible for the game and both were ejected. AUBURN The Elmira Pioneers continued to give away runs and give away ball games Saturday night, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Auburn Astros. Two Pioneers infield errors allowed the Astros to score three times in the second inning.

Black (8-4), who extended his scoreless streak to 23 Vs innings, gave up four hits over 7 2-3 before Jones came in for his 25th save. AMERICAN LEAGUE strikeout of Cy Young's team record of 1,341.

Young pitched for Boston from 1901 through 1908. Clemens, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, is in his seventh season with the Red Sox. ATHLETICS 3, BREWERS 1 Bob Welch won his major league-leading 14th game and Jose Canseco hit his 24th home run to lead thevOakland Athletics past the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1. Welch (14-3), who lost his last start to the Brewers in: Milwaukee, threw 90 pitches in the first four innings and walked four batters. But he worked out of four jams and got stronger as the game went on.

Dennis Eckersley pitched the final 1 Vs innings for his 28th save. Bill Krueger (4-5), who began his career at Oakland in 1983, allowed four hits in seven innings. RANGERS 5, TIGERS 3 Nolan Ryan pulled within two games of his 300th victory as Texas beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 for the Rangers seventh consecutive victory. Ryan (9-4) allowed three runs BOSTON Ellis Burks' pinch-hit three-run homer in the eighth gave the Boston Red Sox an 8-7 victory and a split of a day-night doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals Saturday. The Red Sox ended a losing streak they had stretched to six games after the Royals 2-1 victory in the opener.

John Marzano's two-run single off Kevin Appier had cut the lead to 7-5 in the eighth inning of the late game. Jay Bailer (0-1) took the loss. I Tom Bolton (2-0) pitched three innings to get the win and Jeff Reardori came on in the ninth to strikeout Willie Wilson for his 15th save. Luis Aquino (4-0) won the opener in his second start in 18 appearances this season, while Rob Murphy (0-6) lost the opener. In the opener of the first day-night doubleheader in the Royals' 21-year history, Boston took a 1-0 lead into the eighth on Roger Clemens' pitching and Romine's second-inning homer, his second of the season.

Pittsburgh continues mastery of San Diego, 8-4 home run hitter. PHILLIES 12, ASTROS 8 Dickie Thon had a homer among three hits, again tormenting his former teammates, and the Philadelphia Phillies set a club record with nine runs in the fourth inning while beating the Houston Astros 12-8. In the last three games against Houston, Thon has six hits in 13 at-bats with three home runs, five RBIs and five runs scored. Daniels hit a three-run homer in the first and another in the eighth, both off Greg Maddux (4-9). Morgan (8-7) struck out two and walked two in his fourth shutout and fifth complete game this season. BRAVES 3-2, EXPOS 2-6 Oil Can Boyd pitched seven shutout innings and Mike Fitzgerald drove in three runs as the Montreal Expos beat the Atlanta Braves 6-2 for a split of their doubleheader.

Tommy Gregg's three-run, eighth-inning homer gave Atlanta a 3-2 victory in the first game. Boyd (5-3) gave up three hits, struck out one and walked three. Reynolds' Jwo-run single broke an eighth-inning tie and Barry Bonds homered as the surging Pirates continued to dominate Sah Diego by beating the Padres 8-4 Saturday. Pittsburgh has won 10 of 11 games against the Padres, including all five at Three Rivers Stadium, after losing nine of 12 to them last season. And the Padres aren't the only Western Division team they're dominating these days.
