SPORTS Star-GazettSunday. July 8, 1990 3C Utica outlasts Elmira in error-filled contest, 8-6 Star-Gazette 6 victory over Elmira in New York-Penn League action. Utica's big bonanza came off a strapped Elmira pitching staff and John Locker was one of the Pioneers pitcher Utica took the most advantage of. Joe Solimine started things off in the seventh with Utica leading 4-2. Solimine singled, stole second and scored on Dan Monzon's single.

Mon- zon, who went to third on Kerri Valrie's single, scored on a passed ball. That was the beginning. Before Dave Ring could get out of the jam started by Locker, four runs had scored and Utica led 8-2. But Elmira managed to get within striking distance in the last two innings. In the eighth, Jeff McNeely took advantage of one of Utica's errors and then stoled second and thirs.

Willie Dukes came up with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to make it 8-3. In the Elmira ninth, Jose Lora drew a walk from reliever Frank Campus, went to second on a groundout and then Jeff Limon-celli reached on an error. Jason Friedman walked loading the bases and that prompted Utica to go to Todd Hotz. On his first pitch, he balked home Lora and then McNeely drove in two more runs with a single. With the tying run on board, Hotz got Tim Davis to line out to Monzon for the final out.

Elmira goes to Watertown today for a double-header before ending a week-long road trip by hosting Watertown Monday at Dunn Field. Game time Monday is 7 p.m. UTICA It wasn't pretty for either team Saturday night at Mur-nane Field. But the Utica Blue Sox withstood the ugliness a little better than the Elmira Pioneers. PADRES 3, CARDINALS 1 Bruce Hurst pitched a two-hitter and Jack Clark had a homer and run-scoring single as the San Diego Padres defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1. It was only Hurst's second victory in his last 10 starts, with three losses and no five no decisions during that span. The lefthander struck out four Cardinals and walked four. Clark broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with his 11th home run off Joe Magrane (4-12).

The Associated Press ATLANTA Jim Presley's lith home run of the season snapped an eighth-inning tie Saturday night as the Atlanta Braves cooled off the New York Mets 4-3. New York entered the game having won five straight games and 25 of their last 30.

Presley homered over the center-field fence with two outs on a pitch from reliever Jeff Innis (1-2) as the Braves rallied from a 3-0 deficit. Rookie Kent Mercker (1-0), who had relieved starter John Smoltz after seven innings, earned his first major league victory. Mets starter Sid Fernandez allowed only two hits in six innings and struck out a season-high 10. Fernandez missed his previous two starting assignments with a sore elbow. Atlanta starter John Smoltz was almost as effective, allowing three hits in seven innings.

The Mets did not get a hit off Smoltz until Darryl Strawberry doubled with one out in the fourth inning, following a walk to Gregg Jefferies. Daryl Boston walked to load the bases and Mackey Sasser doubled down the A til Yanks edg9 Twins The Associated Press NEW YORK Wayne Tolleson, the New York Yankees seldom-used utility infielder, averages about one at-bat every couple of weeks. He made the most of his rare two in one game on Saturday. Inserted as a pinch runner in the eighth inning, Tolleson, with a two-out single, sparked a rally in the 12th and scored the winning run from first base on Roberto Kelly's single for a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins. "I've got to make every appearance count," said the 34-year-old Tolleson, who scored his fourth run of the season.

"I'm constantly looking for ways to con-1 tribute." Reliever Lee Guetterman (6-3) i pitched four scoreless innings for the victory and became the Yan- i kees' top winner. After missing an opportunity to win the game in the ninth, Tolleson started things in the 12th. On an 0-2 count, he floated a soft liner to left off reliever Terry Leach (2-2). Then, on a 1-2 pitch to Kelly, he broke. "A straight steal attempt," Tolleson said.

"At worst, I'm out and we start the next inning with the top of the order. At best, we get a ball in the gap and I score." The latter happened. Kelly lined a pitch to left center, fielded by left fielder Shane Mack and thrown to second baseman Fred Manrique. "Mack missed the cutoff man and the ball ended up in the wrong hands," Twins manager Tom Kelly said. "It should've ended up in (shortstop Greg) SAFE AT SECOND: Chicago Cubs' Ryne Sandberg safely steals second base while San Francisco shortstop Jose Uribe tries to make the tag.
