Warren Heint- Backpackers Dress For Comfort, Safety By KATHY SCHULTZ and SHERRIE SIMMERS Women's News Service PHILADELPHIA (WNS) Up until recently, traveling on your own two feet was the most forgotten means of transportation. Now, due to the interest of young people, walking better known as backpacking is enjoying a tremendous revival. Tremendous enough to make it a $25 million industry. In search of peace and quiet beyond the reaches of motordriven vehicles, people of all ages have taken to the trail, either hiking or backpacking (carrying their own food, cooking utensils and sleeping bags in a pack on their backs). Weight Watching The average pack weighs about 20 pounds when full.

When stuffing your pack, the rules are simple. According to Colin Fletcher, hiker-author of "The Complete Walker," if you need something, take it. But pare away relentlessly at each item's weight. In his book, Fletcher gives a fine example of weight watching: "I still like to remember the bewilderment of one sales damsel when I produced my scale and insisted on comparthe weights of two rival pairs of jockey shorts," he says. The well-dressed hiker isn't looking for a nomination to the Best-Dressed list, SO he doesn't worry about coordinating colors or looking sleek.

He dresses for comfort, practicality and safety. He chooses dark colors so dirt won't show but at the same time he wears bright orange or red to attract attention in case of an accident or to warn hunters of his whereabouts. By Adding or Subtracting The idea is to get the most wear from the fewest, lightest items and to be ready for any weather conditions simply by adding or subtracting a layer of clothing. We asked seasoned hikers some of whom are hiking club members, representing all age groups for tips and insights to help make your backpacking experiences pleasant ones. Dr.

Frederick W. Luehring, 90, of Swarthmore, who at 82 was the oldest person to Appalachain Trail from Maine to Georgia, offers hints on lacing hiking shoes for comfort. The retired physical education professor and coach recommends lacing tightly over the instep, then tying a double square knot. Continue to lace loosely from here up. This givs support and flexibility.

"Also, walking with toes straight ahead or turned in slightly can save you aches and pain," he says. Best Equipment Marc Boyer, 17, and also of Swarthmore, was the youngest person, at age 13, to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. His advice: "Follow common sense when filling your pack, and be sure to bring insect repellent." Clarence Boyer, his father who has also completed the trail, adds, "Weigh your pack after you've filled it. If it's more than 20 pounds, start throwing out items. You can do without a lot if you think about it." Mrs.

Alan Stewart, high. school teacher, Yeadon, says "Never go with new shoes and be sure that the two pairs of socks you wear are clean. Wetness and dirt cause blisters." Break in New Shoes Her husband, a medical student who's been a ranger in New Mexico and a lookout scout at Mt. Rainier, suggests walking around with a full pack to break in both yourself and your new shoes. Stewart says, "Don't be too ambitious at first.

Plan a fiveor 10-mile day hike, otherwise you'll get tired and won't enjoy yourself." "Part of the fun of hiking is improvising. A lot of people make their own pack frames woven wicker baskets. from, frames are too heavy and bulky." Other hints: Make sure your pack rests on the back and hips, and does not strangle you from the shoulders. A toolong or too-short pack puts stress on the wrong muscles. When filling your pack, pack the lightest, bulkiest object first to form a shelf for the heaviest items close to the top.
