EXPLAIN PAINTED HIGHWAY MARKINGS FOR MOTORISTS The Department of Highways reports that motorists in the ninecounty District 8 area who use three-lane roads will find painted markings which will be new to them. The new markings are in two main categories. Most common will be some three-lane highways so marked that traffic in one direction will be restricted to one lane, while vehicles moving in the other direction will be permitted to pass other vehicles.

A mile or two farther on, the situation will be reversed, and motorists who were restricted to one lane then will be permitted to pass. Purpose of the marking is to afford a greater measure of protection to users of three-lane roads and to prevent head-on collisions. Any delay encountered because of traffic moving slowly ordinarily will not be more than two or three minutes. A second new type of marking will appear in some places where commercial development or an intersection create a high volume of left turns. These areas will be marked as follows: The center lane will have an outside solid white line and an inside broken white line.

When a motorist encounters this marking, he will know that the center lane is reserved for left turn movements. Counties in District 8 where there are most three-lane pavements are Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York.
