Scott Star-Bulletin Writer The Subject is Religion Finally, she was finished and when the bishop returned from his Lambeth Conference he had a new set of wheat-colored vestments embellished with Hawaii's rainbow colors. Said Browning: "They are gorgeous. Just really remarkable." That was about five years ago and thp hpcinninff of LockwOOd'S love affair with ecclesiastical art.

Hers is the world of fibers and In thread from all of yards of silk over the world." Diana Lockwood was one of the first to see that the bishop had no clothes. Oh, he had the ordinary vestments ordered by mail from a catalogue, but nothing special and surely nothing that would indicate he is the Episcopal Bishop in the Hawaiian Islands. It's really a shame, she thought Bishop Edmond L. Browning was getting ready to go to the Lambeth Conference of the Anglican Church in England and he would look exactly like everyone else. Lockwood is the sort of woman who, when she sees a need, sets about filling it.

She had a loom, had. been studying weaving for six months and thought why not weave him some special vestments and embellish them with symbols that reflect the beauty of the Islands so wherever he goes everyone will know he is from Hawaii? Other Episcopalians thought she had a good idea, so a number of people went together and help ed buy "thousands and thousands i )t J2 ARTIST AT WORK Diana Lockwood weaves silk threads into cloth the colors of the sea off AND THEN her shuttle flew. And as she wove, her vision took substance in purple, in the red and gold of Hawaiian royalty, in the blues of the sea. She had trouble with the mitre, that high-pointed hat worn by bishops. It is stiff in front and back and has soft sides.

"I went over to the cloister of the Carmelite sisters on the Pali and they showed me how to construct the mitre. It's a very complicated process." Lanikai. SHE HAS DESIGNED and created processional crosses of and covered them with tapa. She has made paper and plexiglass mobiles to hang In St. Andrew's Cathedral, and has done appliqued and stitched and embroidered altar cloths.

When Synod delegates came from 15 different Western dioceses two years ago, she painted brilliant hangings of the flowers of Hawaii for the back of the sacristy as well as an altar hanging. She created 88 stoles for the visiting priests and bishops. Now the bishop has a new set of vestments he will wear at Easter this year. The maile vine is appliqued in three shades of green on a yellow background. Always her religious symbolism is anchored in Hawaii's history and culture, in the birds, the flowers, the fruits of the Islands.

Banana pods become symbols of new life; a fisherman's net says "you shall be fishers of her leaves are those of the breadfruit, her vines are of maile on which the ancient Hawaiians said the children of God climbed from heaven to earth. They also symbolize Christ saying: "I am the vine, you are the branches." ALL THIS TIME, while her nimble fingers flew, the pieces of her life seemed to come together: Her early childhood at a British girl's school in Canada, where she learned to embroider thought idle hands made for idle Her work at St. Mark Lutheran Church School, where for three years she has been art director. Her work as director of the Institute for Lay Training in the Episcopal Diocese. Her studies as she continues working on her thesis for a master's of fine arts.

All of them mesh, the warp and the weft of her existence, her spiritual and temporal development weaving themselves together. It shows In her preference for using the ikat method the technique of tieing up, binding and fastening yarn before it is dyed. Her colors shimmer, meld together in a fluid entity. IN HER STUDIO. Lockwood is now designing vestments commissioned by William Swoffard, as- sociate bishop of the Diocese of Washington.

The studio is a light, airy second floor addition to her Kai-lua home and it contains her huge new oak loom, all 570 pounds of it (mistakenly shipped from Chico, to Kahului, Maui). Assembling it was like working a complicated jigsaw puzzle, but she said, "I put it all together myself while my husband (John) was watching the Super All the other tools of her trade and her art, from spinning wheels to a ceiling-high case for yarn and a huge table on which she can paint fabric, stretch yarn and perform a variety of tasks are in the studio. And off at the back is a separate room set up for the dyeing operation, with a stainless-steel sink and a hooded, ventilated stove. It's a delight, she said, after years of working in her kitchen with the fumes from the dyes. THIS SUMMER, Lockwood will be artist-in-residence for Grune-wald Guild in Washington state near Leavenworth.

Named after Matthias Grune-wald, the guild will address itself to all aspects of the relationships between art and faith, with the intent of giving churches access to the best art for their celebrations. The guild is evidence of the renaissance in religious art. Lockwood is in the vanguard of that renaissance. Her work will be on exhibit during her master of fine arts show May 8-12 at the small gallery in the Univerity of Hawaii Art Building. She has offered workshops in all phases of fiber art, ecclesiastical art, at Central Union Church and will periodically do so again.
