concerning the fate of the American ship St Mary It is quite a while since the news reacned here by telegraph that tha St Mary had been sunk off Cape Horn If was stated that the vessel which had collided with the St Mary was the Eaton Hall Meanwhile tbe ship Dumbarton Rock arrived on the 16tb inst and reported having been in collision with an unknown ship off Cape Horn Captain Dona van of the Dumbarton Rock stated that tht collision occurred durinz the nighttime He did not know the name of the shio but got clear with little damage to his ship and with less knowledge of the other vessels rate The statement that the Eaton Hall bad collided with the St Mary held good however until the first named vessel arrived here She reported that she had not been in collision but had sighted an American ship bound from New York to this city in latitude 57 deg 33 rain south and longitude 70 dec 30 mm west It is evident that the three vessels were in company with one another around the Horn and it would appear that the Dumbarton Rock was the vessel that collided with and sank the St Mary Schooners Collide The Seventh Day Adventist schooner Pitcairn sailed on Monday for the Pitcairn islands She carried no merchandise other than tracts and bibles valued at 500 While beating out to sea sb encountered borg ithich was coming in Both vessels were on the same tact and the result was that they collided lightly but heavy enough to do some damage The incoming schooner had her foresail torn and her foreshroud carried away besides which some minor damage was done TbePiU cairn is said to have escaped injury and continued on ner way The Whaling Fleet With the exception of the John and Winthrop which was spoken on August 19th with eight whales no news has been received from the whaling fleet later than August 6th On that date twenty five whalers were heard from and their catch had been fifteen whales The fleet that left San Francisco last summer numbered thirty one vessels and was much larger than that of the previous year It is expected that news will be received from most of the fleet by tbe end of November A Non Union Crew The bark Ophir shipped a non union crew a few days ago and thereby secured the enmity of the Coast Seamens Union A detachment from the union visited the vessel on Tuesday night and succeeded in inducing four of the non union men to leave the Ophtr The captain was chagrined at the loss and shipped another crew He was threatened with another visit from the Coast Seamen and fearing bloodshed he discreetly hauled into the stream The Ophir will sail to day The Ludlows Cargo The coal barge Ludlow which arrived here a few days ago in a water logged condition docked at Howard No 1 yesterday to discharge a cargo of 100 tons of bituminous rock She came from up the coast in tow of a steamer The project was entirely new but is akin to previous attempts made to land coal here on barges Several of these attempts Jiave been successful but there is always the danger of encountering head seas which play havoc with cumbersome crafts lowea on brandy produced and gauge pre vious to or on we xst cay ot July itw taat such brandr Died as Herne from playing Hearts oi Oak at the Bush street Theater because of sv previous engagement with the Alcazar managers was dismissed by Superior Judge Lswler yesterday showing was made in court that Randan 4 Dixon who were formerly Hemes managers made the Alcazar contract without his consent or knowledge and that at present they have no interest either in the actor or his play Attorney George A Knight representing Hawley Mitchell Hemes present managers contended that an injunction eould not Ue under section 3390 of tbe Civil Code which provides that a contract for personal services can not be specifically enforced The plaiutifiy only recourse must therefore rest in a suit for damages against Heme or be persons responsible for his alleged breach of contract It is understood that salts wilt be brought to dav against Wslfenrod by the parties defendant to his suit Hawley Mitchell will sue for 10 000 Herne for 20000 and Leavitt through GotUob his manager for 10000 DR FERRER DEAD HE Dr Henry Ferrer the well known oculist Df this city died of cancer of the kidneys yesterday at Santa Barbara where he has been for some time past vainly seeking relief from the fatal malady to which he at last succumbed Dr Ferrer had been more or less away from bis practice for the past twelve months owing to his illness and the advice of his physician who last summer recommended that he should go to San Rafael where he remained until his final trip to Santa Barbara With the death of Dr Ferrer a vacancy occurs in the ranks of specialists in surgery in this city which will be more than hard to AIL The doctors specialty vu the treatment of the eye ear and throat and no man bore a better or more deserved reputation than this gentleman as is instanced by the testimony of one of the ablest specialists of New York who was visited on one occasion by one of San Frsncrscos millionaires to be treated for the ear and throat Why do you spend your money to come here said the physician when you have Ferrer with you Dont you know that no man in the profession is more profound in his learning or more expert in his operations than Ferrer Dr Ferrer was comparatively a young man He came to California some years ago at the instance of Dr Barton and at once took a prominent position in tae profession as well as becoming an authority in the highest scientific circles He was devoted to his profession a man oi pleasing as wen as commanding address and easifv won the confidence of his associates Dr Ferrer had been the nresident of tbe Miscroscopal Society of this city and has for a long nine occupied tne cnair oi pamoiogy in the medical department of the University of California Dr Ferrer kept weU in the front of his profession and had for years made it an unvarying rule to attend the great congress of physicians which annually meets in Berlin The doctor leaves a family in this city and many friends to mourn him His remains will be brought hither from Santa Barbara FAST SWIMMERS Races and Exhibitions at the Palace Baths Alonzo Trueworthy the proprietor of the Palace Baths was happy last night for hit establishment was crowded with ladies and gentlemen who had assembled to witness a per formance by amateur and professional swimmers If the proprietor was happy his lady employes the Misses Chatfield Hannah and Craven were even happier for It was their benefit and they will realize about 100 each from tbe entertainment The leading feature of the programme was a swimming race for half a mile between Ed Hartley and John Marshal It was won by Hartley in fifteen minutes and forty seconds the best time on record on the Pacific coast Jack Williams who recentlv swam across the bay from Oakland to San Francisco gave a graceful exhibition of trick and fancy swimming gliding through the water with his arms and feet tied etc Some fancy diving was also done by members of the Pacific Swimming Crab Harry Clark beat Harry Harmon in a 100 yard contest and Gay was similarly defeated by Bamber The sport was enlivened by music and all present greatly enjoyed themselves The Liquor Ordinance Upheld judge Van Reynegom affirmed the Judgment of the Police Court yesterday in the case of Thomas Fogarty convicted of a misdemeanor for violating the liquor ordinance of the Board of Supervisors and sentenced to pay a fine of 100 The defendant took an appeal to the Superior Court contending that the ordinance in question was invalid under the recent decision of Judge Sawyer in the case of ChTistensen Judge Van Beynegom upon an examination of the records however held tiat Judge Sawyers decision did not apply to the present case or attack the validity of tbe ordinance except in certain particulars and therefore affirmed the decision of the lower court The announcement that St Marys Cathedral wonld for the first time be thrown open to those in attendance ai the bazar in aid of the building fund and that the grand organ would be tested by Professor A Eirner had the effect last night of crowding the lower hall of the church Long before 8 oclock the scene at the brightly decorated and handsomely furnished booths was a busy one Tickets for articles innumerable were presented and sold by the zealous and charming ladies who are unremitting in their efforts for tbe success of the fair The percentage of the sterner sex in attendance was very much larger than on the two previous evenings and the financial results were correspondingly satisfactory All of the elaborate appointments of the bazar are now complete and tbe large hall has an aspect of dazzling brilliancy Shortly after8 oclock the entrances to the church were thrown open and the bazar was in short order deserted The sight presented was a revelation With the disturbing incongruous marks of the incompleted structure still present with Flotsam and Jetsam Advices from Victoria state that for several weeks sealers returning to that port from the Behring sea report a marked decrease in the number of seals The British ln Queen Victoria cleared yesterday for Bristol Knjrland TRACK AND TEAIN EXTENSIONS OF THE DONAHUE SYSTEM The Boad Will Be Built Six Miles North of Ukiah This Winter The Ban Francisco and North Pacific Company will during the coming winter and spring make some extensions of its system The matter were considered among others at the monthly meeting of the directors on Tuesday last and a decision was postponed until the next meeting It is probable however that the line will be extended to Capello six miles north of Ukiah and the Gueruevtne branch will be built two or three miles farther into the redwoods The former project is of the most interest and importance The extension is on the line of the proposed extension to Eureka and Capello is the point where a road from Lake port westward can best connect with the road The extension of the Guemeville branch will be made to accommodate the lumber firm of Guemeci Murphy and merely means that the timber is about exhausted along the present line and the work of clearing out the redwoods there is progressing The company now has two extensions a short distance beyond Guerse Ttlle forming a fork In the redwood regioa The shorter of these branches is to be length ened and the rails for it will be taken from the other branch which is now auite out of use Ed McD Jonstone has designed a very arti church possesses a peculiar and inspiring sense of immensity and grandeur The white gleaming altar stands out in central prominence in its severe simplicity of design A closer view exposes the beautifully wrought pillars of marble and onyx and the miniature spires and pinnacles of GOthic art The throng of people which crowded the lower hall was lost in the immense auditorium of the cathedral For a time the galleries were filled to their utmost capacity and but few sought the main floor Soon however the sanctuary and lower floor was one mass of people engaged in the closest scrutiny of the various beauties presented and loud in their praises of each artistic triumph viewed When the first thundering notes of Bachs prelude and fugue in minor filled with their glorious
