NATIONAL LEAGUE East Division It was anything but pretty for the Elmira Pioneers Friday night. Elmira fell to division-leading Geneva 1 1-2 In- a New York-Penn League game at Dunn Field. Geneva, 49-25 and headed for a post-season playoff with Stedler Division winner Erie, broke open a close 3-2 ball game with an eight runs in the eighth and ninth innings against reliever Tim Smith, first-baseman turned reliever Dave Alvarez and designated hitter-outfielder turned reliever Willie Dukes. But before it turned nasty, the Pioneers were in control if only for a heartbeat.

Elmira scored one of its patented manufactured runs in the top of the first when Jose Lora was hit with a pitch, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout. Geneva tied the game with a run in the second on a fielder's choice, but Elmira took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when Larry Grant scored H.7 RER B8 $0 5 3 2 2 2 2 2 0 0 0 0 0 1 2 0 0 1 0 7 9 3 2 2 11 1 5 3 3 0 1 0 1 4 4 3 0 1 1112 0 Pet GB L10 Streak Homa 75 55 .577 z-4-6 Lost 1 37-27 74 55 .574 6-4 Won 4 44-22 68 62 .523 7 5-5 Won 1 37-26 62 68 .477 13 z-4-6 Won 1 32-33 60 69 .465 14 z-3-7 Won 1 30-31 60 71 .458 15 z-4-6 Lost 1 30-38 West Division Pet GB L10 Streak Home 75 55 .577 z-7-3 Lost 1 38-26 70 61 .534 5 7-3 Lost 1 39-27 67 64 .511 8 5-5 Lost 2 36-28 60 69 .465 14 z-4-6 Lost 3 32-35 59 72 .450 16 6-4 Won 2 39-27 51 80 .389 24 z-6-4 Won 1 29-38 Away 38-28 30- 33 31- 36 30-35 30-38 30- 33 Away 37-29 31- 34 31-36 28-34 20-45 22-42 Mark Lye 69-66-135 BranCiaar 68-67-135 -9 Steve Lowery 69-67136 -6 Scott Hoch 70-66136 -6 Moms HataJsky 67-69-136 -8 Jim Thorpe 63-73136 -8 Joey Sindelar 68-68136 -8 SconVerptank 74-62-136 -8 Mitch Adcock 66-70136 -8 John Adams 72-64-136 -8 Phi BlacKmar 68-68-136 -8 Bobby Wadkins 71-65-136 -8 Greg Norman 69-68137 -7 Jerry Anderson 70-67-137 -7 Fulton AHem 70-67-137 -7 BobTway 68-69-137 -7 BiVAndrade 67-70-137 -7 Tom Eubank 71-67-138 -6 Corey Pavin 68-70138-6 Tom Pernice Jr. 68-70-1 38 -6 Chris Perry 67-71-138 -6 David Edwards 69-69-138 -6 Ed Dougherty 69-69-138 -6 DaveRummelte 69-69-138 -6 Hal Sutton 70-68138 -6 Curtis Strange 69-69-138 -6 BobEstes 70-68-138 -6 David Ograi 64-74-138 -6 Sean Murphy 67-72-139 -5 George Bums 70-69-139 -5 Nolan Henke 66-73-139 -5 Steve Pate 71-68139 -5 Stanlltley 70-69-139 -5 Emlyn Aubrey 70-69-139 -5 Jay Delsing 70-69-139 -5 JeffSluman 68-71-139 -5 Mark Brooks 69-70139 -5 Webb Hemtzelman 71-68-139 -5 Mark Calcavecchia 72-67-139 -5 Brad Faxon 68-71-139 -5 BobWoteott 69-70-139 -6 Jim Gallagher 69 70-139-5 Jeff Hart 70-70140 -4 Bruce Lietzke 68-72-140-4 Carl Cooper 67-73-140 -4 Dave Eichelberger 66-72-140 -4 Kenny Knox 70-70-140 -4 Loren Roberts 70-70140 -4 PeterSenior 69-71-140 -4 Stave Strieker 69-71140 -4 JackFerenz 68-72140 -4 Dave Ban 72-68140 -4 Mike Schuchart 69-71140 -4 Mark McCumber 66-74140 -4 GeneSauers 67-73140 -4 Richard Zokol 72-68140 -4 Blaine McCallister 71-69140 -4 Bill Sander 71-69-140 -4 GaryHallberg 72-69-141 -3 Patrick Burke 74-67-141 -3 Bobby Clampett 71-70-141 -3 LeeJanzen 71-70141 -3 Trevor Dodds 69-72141 -3 Clark Burroughs 72-69141 -3 Skip Kendall 69-72-141 -3 Sonny Skinner 71-70-141 -3 Ed Fori 70-71-141 -3 Mark Wiebe 70-71141 -3 Dave Stockton 71-70-141 -3 North Seniors Porcea Elmtra Fmvokt 5-5 TSmtti Alvarez Owes WP-Porcei, Cheatham. Then Elmira, running on an empty-armed pitch- ing staff, called in Alvarez. Alvarez had pitched in similar situations three previous times and had been effective keeping the ball in play. That wasn't the case Friday, as he faced four batters, walked three, gave up four runs before yielding to Dukes. Dukes only allowed one more run, but the game was well out of reach for the Pioneers. Diaz and Brad Huff had three hits arh for the Cubs, while Victor Cancel drove in three runs.

The Pioneers play at Batavia in a double-header today before returning to Dunn Field for the final two games of the season Sunday and Monday.
