Galen Hall, Penn State" graduate assistant. It's a big difference and a big fall from coach of the Florida Gators, a job Hall was from last year after he admitted violating NCAA rules. It took Hall's former coach, Penn State's Joe Pa terno, to bring Hall back to football. Paterno hirect him as an unpaid graduate assistant for tight ends, a position usually reserved for someone just getting started in the profession. On Monday, Paterno again defended his decK' sion to bring in Hall.

"I don't condone what Galen did, but he's paid-a. stiff-enough penalty," Paterno, who coached Halp when he was a quarterback at Penn State, said. "I've known Galen since I recruited him out of high school when I was an assistant here. He comes from a small town 30 miles down the! road." For his part, Hall has been keeping a low profile. During Monday's picture day, Hall left early arid" wasn't around when the rest of the 16-man coach" ing staff was photographed, including the other volunteer graduate assistants.

Just a year ago, Hall said he gave a player mori- ey to travel home for a family emergency and ad-' mitted to supplementing the income of some' assistants with his own money. Both are NCAA vio: lations and the school still faces sanctions for Hall's violations as well as those of others at Florida. Hall, who played at Penn State from 1959-61, declined interviews for several weeks. Budd Thai-man, Penn State sports information director, said Hall was uncomfortable with the situation (on" Monday) and didn't want to create a "circus." Paterno said he received a letter from Mrs. Rip Engle, widow of the former Penn State coach Paterno in as an assistant in 1950, wh6rv'; Engle left Brown to take the job at Penn State.

"She (Mrs. Engle) thanked me for helping Ga-. len," Paterno said. Deb Richard 19 $129,080 20. Barb Muchi 21 $125,788 Continued from Page 1C by Mike Songin, the Pioneers roared back with'" three runs in their half of the inning. Erie starter Line Mikkelson hit two batters in the inning. Jeff McNeely tripled home one and afterV; the second, Dave Alvarez doubled to left on a sink-" ing liner for a 3-1 lead. Tempers flared in the bottom of the fifth inning after Larry Grant's leadoff triple to center.

When McNeely lined a sharp foul up the left -field line, he and Sailors' catcher Shaun Sanderson exchanged words, but plate umpire Mark Sterling separated them. When Mikkelson fired two straight pitches wilder McNeely's chin, the Pioneers' outfielder started; to the mound. Both dugouts and bullpens emptied, but there was no physcial contact involved in the brief incident. "I think he (McNeely) thought he was at him," Verdi said. "But it was nothing." McNeely then singled home Grant to conclude -the scoring.

Smith allowed only one walk in the seventh. In the first game, the Pioneers rallied from a 4-1 deficit to gain, but the wildness of reliever John Locker proved costly. Locker (3-1) walked the first two batters of the' sixth inning and both eventually scored on Tommy Mitchell's two-run single. Wasted in the inning were two great, potentially-game-saving plays by Pioneers fielders. Center fielder Shea Wardwell made a running," leaping grab of Joe Boyce's screaming, leadoff" liner.

With runners at first and second, second Jeff Limoncelli made a leaping stab of Echols' shot in the hole, bounced to his feet and threw Echols out. But Mitchell stroked a hard single tor left off reliver Silverio Santa Maria. Erie reliever Garry Wurm mowed down the Pi1 oneers over the final two innings, allowing no base runners and striking out three to record his league-leading 13th save. Starters Mark Mitchelson and Erie's Brian gave up plenty of hits, though many off each were-" soft liners and two of Elmira's runs were un-. earned.

The Pioneers gained a 4-4 tie with a three-run fifth inning, aided by a costly error. Randy Brown led off with a single, and when' third baseman Mike Songini threw in the dirt on Wardwell's bouncer, Brown scored and Wardwell' took second. Larry Grant singled home one run. After Jeff Mc-' Neely's single and a sacrifice, Denny Berni tied the game with a sacrifice fly. The Pioneers' attack was hurt by four runners getting thrown out on the bases, including three, who were caught stealing.
