Sept I Finger Lakes Triathlon; Continued from Page 1C Then came the walk to Perez, which sent a cho-rous boos through the Dunn Field crowd of 1,644. "It thought it was a strike, definitely," Santiago said through translator Dave Alvarez. "Yeah, it was a strike," Pioneers manager Mike Verdi said. "Not only that one, I thought the (2-2) pitch before it was a strike, too." Morris then hit a towering drive to center which was deep but which appeared catchable. Then went back again, but it was too late. "It was like it hit a gust of wind," Graham said. "It just seemed to take off a second time." Graham could have caught the ball had he got- ten to the fence in time, since it hit only five or six! feet up the wall, 390 feet from home plate.

The loss snapped the Pioneers three-game ning streak and added to the frustration the team has suffered at Dunn all season. Elmira is now 6-" 14 at home, has only three victories there since June 26, and has 21 of its remaining 31 games scheduled at Dunn, including a 6 p.m. double- header with Watertown today. "It's always frustrating when you come back to tie and then lose it," Verdi said. "After the good road trip (4-2), I wanted to get a good start on the homestand.

Pioneer starter Chris Davis thought a couple of pitches that were called balls in the early innings-had some of the plate. He then grooved a 2-2 pitch to Charbonnet, which the slightly-built outfielder sent over the'; scoreboard in right-center field with plenty to" spare. That gave the Indians a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers knotted the count in the sixth, when Willie Dukes belted his fifth homer over left field fence. Hot-hitting Jeff McNeely followed with a single, stole second and scored on Berni's pinch-hit sin-gle.

NOTES: McNeely has two hits to raise his aver-' -age to .311 Watertown officials had indicated that Sunday night's rainout in Watertown would be made up here Monday night, but it will be to- night instead The Pittsfield Mets come to Dunn for games Wednesday through Friday nights The Pioneers had three more infield errors (including catchers' throwing errors), giving them a whopping 73., 002 000 001-3 003 1 00 OOK-4 Toms E-Petrai.
