hostess Governor and Mrs Taft costumed themselves In the Italian style but Mrs Taft realising that the resources of Manila must be limited for pictures and books of reference permitted carnival dress Several lighted boats laden with peo pie in Italian peasant dress were pleasing alike to the eye and ear A number of guests represented Marl etta the Maid of Venice and several of Crawfords novels Shakespeare is a never falling source of inspiration and the characters of Othello Two Gentlemen of Verbnai 1 Romeo and Juliet The Taming of the Shrew and the Merchant of Venice were creditably adopted Threer women alike in coloring and feature wore the flowing robes of Rossettis Rosa Trlp lex Dante and Beatrix were there likewise Savonarola David RIzzlo and Mona Lisai while Pompeiian or Roman Senators were encountered on every hand The Italian peasant womens dress was perhaps the easiest from a Manila standpoint to re produce a straight full skirt ailing to the ankles a tight bodice laced over a full white under walst with bishop sleeves a straight narrow apron of jay stripes a head dress of bright material ora kerchlff knotted about the head and many strings of beads on heck and arms formed a costume at once picturesque comfortable and becoming Those of the men who did not care to tax their Ingenuity too heavily wore gowns and caps of different shapes peculiar to lawyers
