I 22 SAX FRANCISCO CHEOKICLE SUNDAY JUNE 3 1894 HI I i I jhi 1 II i Result of the Primary The Regular Ticket Wins Everywhere Delegates to the Republican Conventions An Extremely Large Vote Was Polled The Returns Canvassed by the Campaign Committee A Single Protest Filed The delegates who will represent thu City in the Republican State Convention have been chosen The primary election yesterday was a quiet and orderlv one Even in the Twenty eighth and Twenty ninth Assembly iistricts there was no serious trouble The determination of the Republicans of the city to stand for clean politics carried the day and although the followers of Kelly and Cnmrains had thousands of stuffer slips and attempted to uet many of them few passed the test so rigorousfv and persistently made at the ballot boxes The election was a sweeping victory for the regular ticket In not a single in stance did the opposition win It was crushed completely Its defeat came from the Republicans of the city In all of the district a fair hght was shown Favors were given to neither side nor faction but when the votes were counted the eagle of the regular ticket so far outnumbered the standard of the opposition that it seemed as if there had been no contest One of the most significant results of the election was the fact that a protest came only from a single polling place out of thirty eight in the city That objection was voiced by Kellys officer of election in the first polling place of the Twen ty eighth Assembly district He appeared before the Campaign Com mittee last night and declared that fraud had been committed by the oft cers representing the regular ticket He was asked to specify at least one in stance but could iiot He was told to secure his boasted evidence but did not He was urged to bring his protest betore the County Committee but declined His protest was then filed In only one district was there a contest which merited any consideration as an in teresting one It was between factions having no connection or affiliation with Kelly and Crimmins Jesse Marks and Captain Young locked horns in the Fortieth and Marks won out by an over whelming majority When the Campaign Committee met to canvas the returns last night its rooms were crowded The name of each candidate was read and the vote he had re ceived was recorded The regular ticket had won everywhere and the Campaign Committee announced the following as the elected delegates subject to the con hrmation of the County Committee For an Honest Primary and Freedom rom Boss Hole Polunz place 1 was in a shoe shop at 15 Folsom street Voters living in pre cincts 1 2 3 4 5 6 14 16 and 17 of the Twenty eighth went mere The district had been known as Martin Kelly because ot his residence therein and it was feared that he would make such a desper ate fight to win there that disorder and perhaps bloodshed would ensue Eight policemen were pat at the polling place and at least one was in the room where the ballot box was kept all the time A row occurred between the election officers over the very farst vote Officer Love separated the two combatants and searched all the members ot the election board to see if they bad pistols Io weapons were found on them There was no trouble after that in the room A young man named Culien acted as challenger for the Kelly Crimmins side and bore the brant of the battle for the Kelly ticket Thomas Tully one of the candidates was at the polls but did not make hmself prominent Martin Kelly appeared about noon and went away soon after nutting his ballot in the box He seemed to xeeJ then that there was no hope of victory limothv Sullivan superintended the contest for the other ticket and with him were Sherry Burke and several other active assistants Culien as challenger vocifer ated against the reception of main votes and jeers and ironical laugh ter for his beneht came from the crowd He kept asserting that men who came up at the head of the 1 ne had voted once twice and even three times be fore but the challenged persons always gave satisfactory answer to the election officers and their ballots went in hen ever required the challenged men swore their votes in The Kelly contingent saw how the tide was running against them and even Culien finally concluded that be was using his vocal organs to no purpose One arrest was made at this polling place the charge being drunkenness This section of the city is known as Tar Flat It was quiet enough yesterday The anticipations of trouble were so great that when nothing more than loud con i large number of heelers and their many versation was indulged in as the hours tnends indulged in stim ilants and be wore on the election was pronounced dull came boisterous about the polls The I Kelly and staffers they became desperate One of his heeler started a fight front of the ballot box with the evident purpose of capturing and destroying it There were nine policemen present under Dodge they spoiled the trick Several attempts were made daring the afternoon to get a lot of Kelly and Crimmins heelers near the box and then have the crowd rush in tear down the doors of the polling place and destroy the ballot box It was an old trick but the vigilance of Dodge and his posse spoiled it It kept them busy however for as fast as the staffers were dabbed away they would re turn only to be driven away before they could mass for a rush word got around that an attempt would be made by Crimmins to seize the ballot box when the polls closed Notice was sent to the bouthern Police Sta ion and the posse was increased to fifteen men under charge of Sergeants Price and Spillane The polling place wis on Howard street As soon as the polls closed seven or eight men jumped for the par tition and the pollinc rooms frim the rear They ran against a cordon of ponce who beat them act Then nearly twentv policemen turned loose on the whole crowd which ov that time blocked the comers about Fourth and Howard streets so that the cars could not run The heelers and curious spectators were clubbed till they ran like sneep This lasted for half an hour at intervals of five minutes each as the crowd would again and again mass about the polling place Finally the crowd was driven half a block 1 while at polling place 2 it was 449 In polling place 1 the highest vote cast for Any of the opposition
