It may sound rather chestnntty but the San Francfscos defeated the Sacramentos again It makes the third victory for Hams home talent thu week and the third defeat for the Sao xamento installment It was Dammanns first appearance In public away from home and mamma and if the Sacramento manager knows his business It will be bis last Dammann was discovered trp in the Sacramento valley somewhere tat who discovered him is not quite clear That off ending mortal is keeping quite shady these times Dammann Is a young man who Is endowed with much confidence That is apparent when he stands in toe center of the dia raond with hi cap on the side of his head and looks Teal tough If he was a shade shy on confidence and possessed more Ability lie would be a better pitcher Manager Harris of the San Francisco team who does not like to disparage the opinions of other league magnates says that Dammann has the making of a good pitcher In him That may be but the Sacramento manager ought to wait until he evolutes into atwirler before putting him in the game Then there would not so much trouble in the worfd The hits that were made off Dammanns delivery do not aggregate much They only number rune The trouble was that he could never get the ball orer the plate or there would have been more Louis Balsa had to Jump three feet in the air to reach his curves He did that on three occasions and made Jthree hits Had he not Jumped np into the atmosphere and converted three wild pitches into base bits fourteen men would have walked to first instead of eleven Those eleven bases on balls were bad enough and Mr Bslsz ought to be entitled to the unanimous gratitude of Mr Dammann for keeping the number down Those bases on bails won the game for Esn Francisco The local ball tossers scored more runs than they did hits in every inning that was Todnctive of a tally McGreevey was also wild at times and allowed a number of his opponents to walk to first Bat his efforts In that direction were completely thrown in the shade by Dammanns achievements The following scon shows how the game was won and lost sam nuycHco AB EBSSBPO A SharpSb 4 113 4 10 Power lb 4 kOs 0 7 Xaguire 4 0 0 6 2 Crroll 1 Company now playing at Central Park will close their two weeks engagement to morrow night A school childrens matinee will be given this afternoon and the grounds will be thrown open to the ladies free of charge in the evening A regular migration has taken place during the past few weeks among the bicyclists of this city all heading for the Mecca of wheelmen Chicago for the championship races to be held there by the League of American Wheelmen from the 5th to the 12th of August Among the local wheelmen who will oe in attendance are William MMeeker Ed win Mohrig Horace Sperry Thomas Doane and If Carpenter all of the Bay City Wheelmen The Caaosicur will be favored with notes from some of these gentlemen on the races to be held there The most important event in Chicago will be the meeting between Zimmerman and Sanger representing the American contingent end Osmonde and several other English and foreign champions Probably the most interesting will be the race between Zimmerman and Sanger whifh will undoubtedly take place Zimmerman has for the past three years been the undoubted champion of the world and if he resorts to his old practice of making a hard race from the start to finish he will without doubt take the majority of the prizes Sanger is most phenomenally fast man on a spurt and if Zimmerman does not tire him out before the end of the race it will be a question whether the Milwaukee man will not come out the winner Sanger is a very large man and reminds the California wheel men a good deal of Eiwell the ex king of uic racing psiu lie re Walter Foster of the Bay City Wheelmen is at present in Southern California He is not racing but is there in the interests ot his business The Riverside Wheelmen are to hold a road race and race meet on September 9th Tbey have already issued their advertisements in which they offer 1500 worth of prizes Evidently the races will be well worth contesting The circuit around San Francisco will be an interesting one this falL The Bay City Wheelmen are to hold three nights of racing by electric light the latter part of August which in itself is enough to keep interest in cycling in California on the jump The intention Is to place about twenty or thirty arc lights besides innumerable incandescent lights around the track at Central Park placing the poles both on the inside and outside of the track so that no shadows shall be cast The nights bore in the latter part of August are most invariably warm and pleasant and as the grounds are well sheltered by the grand stands the riders will experience no difficulty or discomfort from any inclemency of the weather It is a novelty which has never been tried on this coast before and should prove of great interest to the public at lajge and good financial investment to the club promoting it The races at Central Parir will be followed by the meet of the Alameda Bicvcle and Athletic Club to be held on their grounds in Alameda on Saturday afternoon August 26th This is tne first single Ahnex a decided Impetus The directors are fitting np a room ia the basement with all the necessarv conveniences for the care and repair ot wheels and have also a signea tne annex a nome a joining tne lounging room where wheelmen may discuss sprocket and tire undisturbed AH the cycling publications will be kept on file here A neat and dressy uniform has been adopted to which all will be expected to conform and this is the only requirement to membership in the annex There are several embryo flyers in the club and soother season will see the red and White of Olympia somewhere near the van of the cycling column Captain Buss is alive to his opportunities and makes an efficient officer while lieutenants Hunter and Haley are his right and left bowers Last Tuesday evening that veteran wheelman Welch was elected presiding officer and Lewis Hunter was elected secretary Aran to Mill Valley has been called for to morrow leaving the clubhouse at 830 The programme for the first mile first prize Winchester rifle second prize gentlemans traveling bag third prize sweater One mile handicap first prize order for business suit second prize silk umbrella third prize sweater The meeting coming as it does shortly before the big meet at San Jose on the th of September will give racing men an opportunity to test their condition and also the ability of the persons whom they will meet later on in the championships The Alameda track is a favorite one with racing men and from the attention being given to it should be faster than ever before The early birds are already in training and each evening from 6 to 9 oclock a number of riders maybe seen taking their exercise spins AMONG THE YACHTS ANOTHER NEW SHOYEL NOSE BOAT The Speedy Sloop la Poloma The Owner of the May-flower The Oakland navy will sail another the series of races on the programme of that organization to morrow About forty sail boats small yachts and canoes are entered The enthusiasm which has characterized the navy since its organization is at its height nd the contest will be a highly interesting one Many changes have been made in a number of the craft which have sailed in tha previous races and some new boats will be entered Mr KeHey Captain Matthew Turners draughtsman has a new boat which was put overboard last month She is built after the shovel nose type with enormous overhang at both stern and bow She is thirty five feet in length overall and yawl rigged An invitation has been extended to Mr Kelley to enter his new boat for this race which it is thought he will accept If this boat sails over the course it will add greatly to the interest of the race as she is the largest of the new racing type afloat on Pacific waters in fact the only oner with perhaps the exception of Mr Cooks Dart which is not an unqualified success Captain A von Schmidt at present holds the free for all trophy having won the first three races with the Whirlwind but a number of boats have during the past month been outsailing her There is every indication that the coming contest will be a cloe one The fastest sloop on the coast is La Paloma owned by Hancock Banning of Los AUgeles She bested theAnnie at 1111111 Mmdi fflW I ill 1 LA PALOMA THE FASTEST SLOOP OS THE COAST Saturday afternoon meet tried on the coast San Jose has been granted sanction for its races to be held on Admission day September 9th This will complete a circuit which has never been equaled in California Spalding and Terrill of the Bay City Wheelmen have Inst returned from a weeks trip through the Santa Cruz mountains The roads they report a trifle dusty but nevertheless a most enjoyable trip was had The Bay City Wheelmen will hold a run to Petaluma on Sunday July 30th This is a very popular ride with the wheelmen and will undoubtedly be largely attended The following letter received by George Wetmore resident of thfr Bav Citv Wheelmen from Bernays explains itseii Knowing such matters to be of interest to you and to those most Intimately connected with you in the management ot the Bay City Club permit me to quote as follows from letter Just received from ft Fox the young man who made snch a good showing at your tsco meet Jnly 1st to 4th Mr Fox la now in Chicago I quote as follows I went out to the new track where the International races are to be held The track one third ot a mile I most say was some bat ot a disappointment to me The turns are iairly wide about thirty feet but the straights are quite narrow about like the homestretch of the Riverside track The surface while it was doubtless damaged by the recent rains was not up to date The soil it hot very fast I believe naturally not to fast as the Riverside or even the Los Angeles traekt Workmen ate engaged in putties It into shape all toe time and they expect to have it in Al condition by August 7th I only lookedat ene turn and It was hanked only about one foot in fire which for a concrete or cement track is perhaps enough but I believe tot a dirt track or one that wears the least bit it is not enough to be safe I believe the Say City tVheelmen hare a track to be proud ot 1 think that they have nnconsciously perhaps struck the right idea with their bard surface laid upon the hrelr board bottom This gives life but still is level and smoothly surfaced The addition ot the San Francisco Bicycle Club has given the Olympic Cycling SOI TENNIS GOSSIP Taylor andTobias Defeat Expected Points About the Winning Team JtI8CKLtoLTBocg The Sonthern California Tourna fflentrPim Is Kow the Champion The defeat of Tobin and Taylor at Chicago on Wednesday last at the hands of Hobart and Hbvey did not occasion any surprise on this coast among those who have noted the past performances of the victors That the latter are great if not the greatest team in America to day was proved in their match with Hall and Campbell at Tnxedd last week in Which tbere victorious in straight sets by a score of 60 97 6 Individuallr Hobart and Hovey are two of the most able exponents of the game in the United States and each plays a terrific game both from the back court and at the net For the past two years Hovey has won the all comers at the United States championship but was beaten in the championship round by Campbell the present Champion Thus far this sea son Hobart has shown wonderful improvement in his play and has defeated such players as Hovey Chase and Hall and beaten them so handily that should nothing unforeseen happen it is almost a certainty that be will play the present champion Campbell at Newport for the United States championship on August 25th The exceedingly easy victory achieved over Tobin and Taylor byJIovey and Hobart was however a little bit surprising to Pacific coast people as their representatives were supposed to be able to make at least a better showing than obtaining but three games in as many sets Such a poor showing can be accounted for how grass courts It was Tav actual experience on any bnt bitumen or dirt courts Another unfortunate circumstance was the manner Jn which the drawing resulted Tobin and Taylor being Against the strongest team in the tournament so early in the contest Had they rfet Hovey and Hobart about the third round in stead oi tne nrst it is reasonaDie to suppose that they would hire been more ac customed to the play of the courts and would evidently have made at least a little better showing However their playing as a team is not nearly aggressive enough to make them dangerous opponents for such a hard smashing driving game as played by the Eastern cracks Their signal de feat will no doubt give Pacific coastpIayH era a strong nint to improve tneir game by sacrificing gracefulness in play to hard driving and smashing Taylor will journeyEast after the conclusion of the Chicago tourney and will tace part in tne singles tournament at Manchester His performances there will be watched with igreat interest by Califor mans as he snrelr olavs a mneh Rtmncer game in singles than in double play and win give a good line on his abilities as the best players in the country are to participate The proposed ladies doubles at San Mateo which was to have taken dace the latter part of this month has wiselv been postponed as there were poor prospects of its success as there were not enough teams avauaoie to make it interesting as most ad the lady players are out of town It Is quite likely that the event will take piace about tne latterpart oi August As elegant prizes will be offered it is thought that many teams from the neighboring tennis clubs will take an active interest in the contest The Southern California Tennis Association has issued circulars announcing its annual midsummer tournament to begin on Monday Avalon Catalina islands There is nothing of a nautical or breezy appearance about General Charles Pamef writes James 8ummers io the New York World On the contrary his face and bearing indicate that he is a man of close thought quiet and unassuming and his slightly bent and spare figure rive an impression of great latent force He lores above all things to sail a boat faster than anybody else could do it but his incentive the defense Of the Americas cup has been pure and simple patriotism He was born in Boston and is a direct descendant of Robert Treat Paine one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence It is safe to rank him as a millionaire though his wealth is not inherited Most of his most fortunate investments hare been made in railroad enterprises He is a graduate of Harvard ana though he studied law he has practiced scarcely at all his great property having of late years given him ample employment General Paine Is too well known to the yachting world to need an extended notice at this time When the country was in need of a yacht to defend the Americas cup he quietly ordered the sloop Mayflower His money paid for her She defeated the Galatea and the cup was saved Again when the Thistle challenge came he built the Volunteer and with her held the cup This year he has given his son John Paine the benefit of his advice and experience in the building of the cup defender Jubilee and it would not be strange if again the Paine boat should be selected to meet the Valkyrie COLOMBIA Thev Buy Columbia bicycles mHKV AWE TfTE REST ASD HAVE JL rnaner Colnmola
