Cincinnati Reds climbed to within IV2 games of the National League lead Friday night, sweeping a double-header from the New York Mets 3-0 on Jim Maloney's one-hitter and 4-1 on a combined three-hitter by Bob Purkey and Sammy Ellis. The double victory, which extended the Reds' winning string to six games, enabled them to gain IVi games on the first-place Philadelphia Phillies who dropped a 7-5, 12-inning decision to Milwaukee. The Orioles whacked 15 straight singles before Boog Powell belted his 36th homer in the ninth and Brooks Robinson followed with a double. Rookie Wally Bunker got the victory, although he was relieved by Harvey Haddix in the sixth. Bunker has won five of his last six starts and now has an 18-5 record. Palisades Bows In Cross-Country UPPER DUBLIN Bob London led Upper Dublin to a 22-33 cross country victory over Palisades Thursday, its second victory without defeat. London crossed the finish line of the 2.4-mile course in 13 minutes, 34 seconds, seven seconds in front of the Pirates' Dave Bolak.
