pODllshth following railroad news It wes recently announced that the Southern Pacific and Atchison Topeka tod Santa Fe roads bid entered into a compact by which the latter company creed to build no road north of Mojave In iplte of tbi port the Tribune is now able announce that the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe will bnlld a line from thli city along the coast to San Francisco la the near urn re Quite recently the 31ml and Lot Patoa ranches In Ventura county were purchased by a syndicate headed by Hon Thomas Bard of Hueneme Across these ranches was surveyed a line for the railroad fronra point In Ban Fernando Talley to Ventura At that time Bard of ferred the Southern Pacific 30000 to tire this route the preference over the Xewhsll line It is orer this line that the Atchison win build op their road Tha road will leave Los Angeles crossing the river on the bridge used by the Atchison Topeka and statsFe road now running northwesterly crossing the Southern Paclflo road close to Sepal veds and continuing on the same deration The road runs out Into San Fernando Talley by the old Mission church and through Porter Brothers ranch turning to the westward and entering the tnoantalns by way of Santa Suzanne pass There will be a short tunnel at this point The road then runs down an easy grade fnto 81ml valley goes through this valley to Los Pesos ranch and then to the Santa Clara Talley It will cross the Santa Clara tlver at a point Just south of Satlcoy then before entering Cuius pass a branch vUl leave the main line penetrating the mountains into the OJel Talley This branch may however start from Satlcoy and by way ot Santa Paula cross Santa Clara Talley and reach OJal by way Ot the Santa Paula canyon Either route Is feasible The new resd will get out of Santa Barbara by way of Gaviota pass the only cross on the Thompson raneh into Bnena Ventura From this place the line will rnn north up Ventura Talley and cross tha mountains going toward Santa Barbara by way of Casitas pass The Southern PaclSe follows the coast between Ventura and Santa Barbara tearing Casitas pass and Carplnterla Talley clear for their rlvaL The latter route la much more feasible with Just a natural road through the mountains The Southern Pacific have already surveyed their line following the coast ronnd by Point Concepclon and so to San Lais Obispo This Une is much longer than by Gaviota pass The Southern Pacific gave their reason for preferring it that the road through the mountains necessitates baring tunnels Tha truth of the matter la the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe bold the right of way through Gaviota having Inherited it from the Atlantic and Pacific The Atchison will reach San Luis Obispo by building down Santa Maria valley by way of Los Alamos From that point there are dozens of rentes go San Francisco Sarreys are only being completed now along this route and the toad will be finished to Santa Barbara In six months From that place work will be pushed rapidly In connection with this system the road will probably be built np the coast from Eallona to Hueneme and connection made with the main line of the Atcnlson to control trade In the Santa Clara Talley The new lice will bare ad Vantages orer the Southern Pacific Coast line and will be sixty miles shorter between Loa Angeles and San Francisco mad while reaching the same principal joints as the Southern Pacific line traverses richer country with better scenic advantages A TEKRIBLE CIME Two Tongha Draw Bevolvet and Shoot to Kill Fkxsko May 17 A shooting scrape oc currea nere last evsnlng It out of his name because a claim bad been tramped up and hi stock was to be attached and destroyed as collateral It was retrans ferred to him after the consolidation Gould said that on th supreme Court decision on the ThurmanbUl he made up his mind that he had better have several thousand stockholders It wu for hi tn tereht to put the stock out the consolidation had advanced its value twenty at th Alcaaar and It is not too much to uythat It fully deserves th reputation Which it hu gained elsewhere the strongest acting melodrama ot the day TJnllke th old school of sensational plays it does not violate the unities nor Introduce characters unreal or Impossible nor are the situations however thrUHnf or startling they may be In any respect beyond the bounds ot probability Given the characters here represented and their actions and the Tarlety of situations in which they find themselves ar naturally evolved from the action of the piece and from th cluh aud conflict ol their opposing interests The story like that of all successful dramas is In the main a simple one David Klngsley a lieutenant in tha Boyal Navy loves and Is loved by Dora Vane the adopted child ol Captain Nelson of the Preventive Service Dora Is heiress to a considerable fortune and this attracts the cupidity ot Frank Moreland the Squire of Red cliff who hu heretofore ruined and abducted Line tie daughter ot Captain Kelson Line comes to her old home determines to seek her betrayer at his home sad on th lanie evenlnr Doras wedding are she receives a not from Morelsud uking car to visit nun tt M4relnd Helton tbs pretense of saving a friend iDora not lved byth letterbut to sat LlnAfoUows her to th hall and ther met Moreland alone who threatens her with exposure of her visit snd the rnln of her good name At this Juncture David Klngsley who had been seat to the hall olXicholu Moreland Franks cousin and heir presumptive in the hope thst he David wiU kill Frank comes upon the scene and rescues Dora upon their disappearance Una reappears and at the same moment Mark Helstone a former lover of Lines rashes in attacks Frank Moreland with a pistol and kills Otis Nicholas believes at first thai Klngs ly has allied th squire but guessing from an unguarded remark of Helstones that he Is the murderer still determines to allow suspicion to attach to ingsley whom he hates for his action In connec tion with his Nicholas Morelands dishonorable discharge from the navy Of course it eventually turns out by Helstones own confession that he Is the murderer and the clouds which have hang over the llverof David and Dora roll away and again the Harbor Lights a paraphrase for PotVs loving eye shine out bright sad clar over the happy couple The hero David Klngsley is most ad mirably played by Gustavus Levlck whe presentation of the gallant loving sailor leaves little to be desired In the first act en his return from sea and In the third where on the quarter deck of the Britannic he faces the Tlllaln Nicholas and begs for time to meet and relate his Tile slanders be it especially effective and rises to the rank of more than ordinary actor His work shows a thorough conception of the spirit of the play and a sympathy with the meaning and methods of the author Ethel Brandon Is an Ideal Dora Vane She is euy natural and unaffected graceful and charming In movement and gesture with a sweet voice and smile and with a great deal of dramatic force and fire Her as sumed character Involves a long range ot delineation from the playful daughter to the proud and loving wife and from the maiden blushing in her lovers arms to the women defying her persecutor and tormentor and in no scene Is she foand lacking Indeed it Is not euy to say whether she Is the more admirable the winsome daughter of a fond father or the indignant woman scorning the addresses of a detested suitor Miss Brsn don Is a decided acquisition to the dramatic talent of California and her superior in her line Is not upon the boards of any theater in the Stat Th clement of comedy which 1 necessary to relieve the tendon of the highly dramatic scenes is furnished by Hattie Moore Peggy Chadlelgh Fanny Young Mrs Chudleigh and Stock well a Tom DoMiver and it 1 acarcly necessary to say more than that they fully sustained their reputations for fan making and pare comedy Stockwell the Jolly tar wu especially happy nor wu he In any respect superior to the ladies mentioned Frsnk Mordaant the bluff old Captain Nelson wu a picture of the hero grown old in the service of his country and Is hit declining years laid up on half pay to guard the coast from smugglers snd the like and In more than on scene wu fully up to the rank which he has long since established for himself George Os boume Mark Helstone gave oae more of the numerous proofs of his remarkable versatility He hu played many parte and it may be truly said of him that he hu touched none that he did not adorn Nicholas Moreland one of tha most important characters Is played with ability by George Dalisl bat th gentleman seemed to hare some difficulty with his articulation which detracted somewhst from the merit of his rendition of the part As a whol th play Is one of the strongest most natural and thrilllngly Interesting which hu ever been played in San Francisco and the cast ia fully equal to th merits of the drams The spectacular feature of the play dsierv special notice Much car and attention hu been given to this most Important accessory of the drama and the result 1 thoroughly satisfying In every act and every scene there la something above the avertg of ordinary scenic representation In the first scene Bed elifi on the Sea the quality of fidelity to nature is strictly carried out and the lllu slon is remarkable The landing of Lieu tenant Klngsley In the man of war boat Is admirably managed and the realistic element well preserved Moreland Hall ia also admirably presented and reflects much credit upon the scenic artist and stage manager The finest effect perhaps In the play is the deok of the man of wu Britannic It is not euy to realize that the quarterdeck of an actual war ship is not presented to the view of the audience and the Illusion Is helped out by the cutlass drill of the men which Is veU managed Nor should the scene of the Devon Cliffs in the fourth act forgotten The staging of th entire piec reflects greet credit neon all concerned in its prodae tlon and it folly equal to anything heretofore attempted upon the more com modious stages of larger theaters The boos vu picked last evening and the audience manifested its appreciation of the merits of the play and tha actors by frequent apf please Flowers and floral places were present In profusion and call before th curtain rewarded th efforts of th principal characters tim and again Harbor Lights Is hooked for a successful ran the drama and its rendition alike deserve saccesa nan goodness that mores hery It
