Dispatch to the Chronicle NEW YORK July 28 One of the most talked of young Californians In New York a few years since has been living very quietly on the income derived from his share of his fathers estate This year he reappears upon the surface and the yacht Alert skims the cummer seas with John Lunlng at the helm The Alert is the craft upon which he created such a sensation In Mediterranean waters some years since Commodore Harry Gllllg and Skipper John Lunlng are the representative California yachtsmen now In Eastern waters During the last years of his life when he visited New York the late James Phelan was much occupied with the project of a big office building to occupy the site of the Stevens House on lower Broadway He had the plans drawn btit something always interfered with the scheme As a hotel the Stevens had even then outlived It usefulness Other property owners In the vicinity not of Phelans procrastinating ways put up Office buildings which have always been sources of profit Meanwhile the Stevens closed Its doors Phelan wearied of his proposed Phelan block In New York sold the property and went back to San Francisco and left his property an interesting family and Phelans dream Of a big office building seems further off than ever of realization for the StevensHousev is rising again not Phoenlx like because there were no ashes laHse from but frofri the almost Olivia lsplaying old woman In the original Trilby at the Madison Garden Theater Edwin Stevens is leading with the Sphinx at the Casino The summer weather seem to have knocked all the starch out of his composition The latest arrival is the Trilby cock tail Saloon keepers advertise It In anticipation of a demand altogether too great to nil in an illustrated fashion A female figure supposed to represent Trilby as she appeared to Little Billee before the class In the altogether Is the motif as the French artist would put it Anything new Is welcomed In summer Quite a sensation was created In Lower Broadway by an old fashioned buggy driven by a long haired Individual who was urging with frequent whip lashing a pair of elks They were entirely tractable and seemed to enjoy the driving It was an advertising scheme but certainly had the merit of novelty At Coney island by the sad sea waves last week were Mr and Mrs James Robinson of Los Angeles Before John Mackay left for Alaska he invited several friends to lunch with him at his down town office in the Postal building Among others bidden was Hermann Oelrlchs who knew what a good thing is so he went early The lunch was one of those for which Mr Mackay is famed all over Manhattan island It was prepared by the chef of the Hardware Cluh but the last of the bonanza kings designated the menu and personally saw that the ingredients were properly mixed Mr Oelrlchs said it was the heartiest lunch he had eaten since the days ot 1849 The menu was Clam chowder Corned beef and cabbage Squaw pie Plain simple wholesome in gener fous successful season with Sousas Band will sail away to Paris In August She has aspirations in grand opera and thinks she can catch on to the vocal essentials by Parisian methods Miss Hamilton and Miss Thorne have had no cause for complaint during their vocal seasons and the coming winter expect to renew their musical successes Frank Carolan and wife are the guests of Papa Pullman at his splendid Elberon Long Branch establishment so it is reported It is also rumored that Mr Pullman Is very much disgruntled over a projected railway trolley that Is to connect the aristocracy of Long Branch with the more plebeian Asbury Park In which event the sleepingsleeping car king will sell his belongings and hie himself family and relatives elsewhere Mrs Henry Rosener having progressed through the Adtrondacks Is now at the Hotel Windsor Saratoga much Improved in health She recently made the ascent of Mount MacGregor by rail bien entendre and viewed the now historical cottage where General Grant breathed his last There is a lovely view from Ihe summit of all the surrounding country and every visitor to Saratoga makes It a sacred duty to ascend Mount MacGregor A party of California mining men were seated In a lower Broadway office yesterday talking old times for the want of anything better to do Well who would have ever thought said one that Henry Janin would ever go out on the road again He was Interrupted with the query On the road And the answer came pat Yes why mean In Janlns case ever go out and make mine examinations as an expert again That is what he is doing now in Colorado after having spent some time In California in the same business What part of Colorado Routt county His old friend and co expert Smith came over from London and met Janin In Colorado and they are examining those gold quartz sands that George Roberts has been working on so long Here another broke In I hear that Roberts after securing the attention of London capital has gone over to Carlsbad to take the treatment Hope It wil make a new man of George He has been much run down these last few years Here a third member of the Nothing to Do Syndicate Interjected with By the way did you see the notice of the death of de Crano over In Germany He was one of the tribe of experts who flourished on the Coast for so many years How scattered they are eh Garney Williams and John Hays Hammond in the name of the Madison stable This year he has several promising two year olds and he expects to bring down several persimmons Its a pleasant pastime to own race horses said Mr Kelly and there Is nothing I like better after a years hard work to run up to Saratoga and see the horses run and his face lit up with pleasurable anticipation Commissioner Moses Gunst Is still here busy with his police inspections and will hardly get away before the 1st of August He runs down to Coney Island occasionally but under the new regime he says you cant get many points down there Altogether he Is well satisfied with his tour Californians returning from London recently say that Wendell Easton Is doing yeomans service In behalf of the Pacific Coast compared to which the excursion labors of the Half Million Club are as but childs play He is bringing home to a very desirable class of immigrants the benefits and advantages of the Golden State as a home and it is not unlikely that he will have a large following In the near future Easton is built in an earnest practical progressive mold and he impresses people when he talks to them of the sunset land A regiment of Eastons scattered over the old countries would do a power of good Frank Corcoran has turned his face westward and talks as If he would make the Ccst his home again There Is no State like California no valley like Napa valley Its Just the right climate for a man growing in years and experience is what Frank thinks In a nutshell Lon Hamilton and John Jones with their respective families are at the Grand still They seem to menageries with wild animals is interesting especially when the circus agents go directly to the haunts of the beasts to capture them alive Gaylord foreign agent for the Rlngllng Bros circus has had some thrilling experiences in this work Soma time ago he wrote the Rlngllngs from Singapore about a hunt to capture Users alive Among other things he wrote Although the Island of Singapore Is only fourteen miles In extent there are no less than 500 tigers that Inhabit Its woods and people here do not venture alone beyond the city limits after nightfall The first night of my arrival here while our ship lay in the harbor I could plainly hear the roaring of the bloodthirsty beasts as they prowled around the outskirts of the city In search of prey Mr de 8ilva the native agent having located several tigers trails we started on foot with about fifty natives the following morning The trip to the first tiger trail was only three or four miles and we arrlved at this point at aoout 8 oclock After locating the trail exactly and finding the stream to which the tiger must break for water each night on awakening from his all day sleep the habit of the tiger we set about making our preparations In the direct path of the tiger we dug a pit seven feet wide ten feet long and fifteen feet deep but much longer and wider at the bottom than at the top All the dirt dug from the pit was carefully removed to a considerable distance by the natives and they showed great care and skill in not leaving any external evidence of the fact that a big hole had been dug A lot of bamboo strips were next laid over the pit and these covered with dry leaves made to appear like the general surroundings We next took three bamboo sticks about twelve feet in length and placed them In the form of a tripod in such a position as to bring the point of the tripod directly above the center of the pit From the top of the bamboo sticks some of the natives suspended a live goat by a cord barely strong enough to bear its weight and sure to break If the tiger leaped upon the goat Everrthhur be ing in readiness for Mr Tiger as soon as he chose to go against our little game Mr de Sllva and myself as well as the natives repaired to a hut about eighty rods distant and waited deVelonmmts It had been dark about an hour audi Degan to think we were going to be disappointed when one of the natrrel rushed into the hut crying lend beshma The furious cries of the tiger hal startiea mm as with a terrific roar It sprang upon the suspended goat and going down with its burden sank into the merciless pit prepared for It Igniting a number of torches both to light tne way and to forestall any attack that might possibly be made upon us front wild animals we proceeded in a body to the pit The roars of the tiger were awful as he furiously tried to leap onward to gain his freedom As I haves ready explained to you the sides of the pit slanted Inward toward the top and at every effort the tiger could beitard striking his nose against the loose earth This frantic behavior was kept up for about an hour when entirely ex hausted the fierce king of the Jungle my perfectly quiet at the bottom of tne pit Two of the natives now lowered bamboo basket down into the pit letting the open side fall directly over the supine form of the tiger Immediately after tnis a number of natives Jumpea into the pit and began crowding rattia withes through the sand beneath tha tiger and bringing them around tla basket In this manner the tiger wal in a few minutes completely Inclosed la the bamboo basket Returning to the hut we awaited lit dawn and as soon as It appeared tM natives went back to the Dlt and llftrf the basket containing the tiger out of St we detailed ten of the coolies to taw our captive to the city Before thC started I took a look at our prl through the rattan withes He wai iS magnificent specimen but the sorrieJfe lookrig tiger I ever saw He was ered with blood from his frantic effort to get out of the pit and the skin wU peeled from his nose and face whS the eyes were almost entirely closed ot the swollen face 3 Smallpox Epidemic Smallpox is so much in earnest in Bo ler county Me
