SCHEUER To paraphrase an old riddle, just how many private eyes can dance in a 21-inch picture tube? And which one of them will be the first to concede that with dozens of them set for the new season, there isn't a private eye in the business who has any privacy left? If you haven't already guessed, I'm going to tell you about a new private eye series. It's called "Philip Marlowe" and it stars Philip Carey. Early last Spring, an NBC program executive confided in me: "We finally came up with a winner. Our new 'Philip Marlowe' series is the best private eye series I've seen in years!" The NBC man had every right to use the company "we." NBC had thought so much of the property the network dug into its corporate treasury and financed the pilot film for Goodson-Todman. But something went awry.

In a pre-season deal, NBC sold "Philip Marlowe" (complete with Philip Carey) to ABC. My NBC friend was heartbroken, "If the series is as good as the pilot indicated," he told me. "ABC really 'stole a big one from us!" Revamp Show The first thing ABC did upon acquiring the property was shake up the production staff. Then the show was revamped into a real whodunit and the pilot, which is supposed to be so good, is scheduled to be sneaked into the series well after its premiere on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

According to Phil Carey, the "new" Philip will be a girl chaser and he'll engage in this plus his detection activity to a lively modern jazz background, complete without melody. Just for the record, "Philip Marlowe'' is based on the Raymond Chandler stories and was done as a radio series starring Gerald Mohr some years back. As is true of most stars of new TV series, Phil Carey will have to divide his time between acting in the show and making personal appearances on behalf of it. Luckily, Phil is a personable guy. Also, thanks to his feature film background, he's experienced in the art of the good-will tour.

"It's simply a matter of being charming and being able to hold your liquor 24 hours a day," he said. "And I dont care who you are, you must be able to begin drinking at about ten in the morning. And you have to be able to cope with the inevitable person who approaches you at these friendly gatherings and says: 'I saw your last picture. What gives with that crazy On Tour "You try to be polite and sidestep the question, but they're relentless," Phil continued. "So you drink a little more and each drink makes you feel more and more like belting the pest.

But you retain your composure, which only makes him madder. And he goes off and demands to know who had the nerve to invite you in the first place." Phil's first personal appearance tour was with Kim Novak and he still isn't sure what the studio thought might happen. "They sent five other women along as protection," heboid me, "but whether they were" there to protect Kim from me or me from Kim, I could never figure out. In either case, they weren't needed, as I think I finally convinced my wife who called me every night 7 I I WYtK HtKt Ltol MIGHT' 1 13 II 11 i I stage of the season, with the my riad announcements of new shows and stars, be prepared to get a lot of hastily researched, errone ous news. Paris is a dramatic coach and acknowledged to be one of the best in the business.

He doesn't advertise, doesn't solicit business, doesn't conduct widely publicized group workshops and never gets his name into the gossip columns. Some years ago a well groomed, nice appearing couple came into his ofifce with their daughter. The daughter, Paris admits today, was something-of a shock. She was big, she was large, she was hardly what you would call pretty and she was wearing what Paris can only describe as a circus tent. His heart sank because these people had been sent to him by an old friend.

G'bye!" craft and that any intelligent person with no obvious "talent" can learn enough of the mechanics of the craft to become an acceptable actor. The mechanics, he says, are simple enough to define but not so simple to master how to stand, how to walk, how to move, how to talk. "Actors," he says, "can be made, but the artist is born. The artist has a thorough grounding in the mechanics of his craft and then simply transcends craftsmanship and turns his performance into artistry. Perhaps the best example of this is Greta Garbo.

She is a technician, a craftsman and an artist, all at once." Paris differentiates between an actor and a personality, but claims that even the best actor puts the. stamp of his own personality on whatever role he plays. "Helen Hayes is a great actress, but no matter what she is playing there are always overtones of Helen Hayes. The actor essentially plays a role. The personality essentially, plays himself." Paris has little time for "mood" and "method." "Acting," he says firmly, "is a commercial business.

The good actor is the one who can be handed two brand new pages of dialogue at the last minute, read and learn it quickly and then step in front of the camera and do a job. The actor who has to spend half the day getting into the 'mood' is wasting his and everybody else's time. He really isn't an actor at all."
