night and quite an ovation at the Alcazar Theater for White Whittlesey who began a starring season which promises to be an Immense success Mr Whittlesey has for several years been a welcome visitor at the Alcazar and there were several beautiful floral pieces presented to him last night The play was an excellent one to open In It was Henry Millers Heartsease and although that popular actor has made it quite familiar this is the first time It has been seen at popular prices Many people in the audience had evidently seen It before but that seemed rather tq increase than diminish the Interest It was beautifully staged and the musical effects were thoroughly well produced The sentimentality of the story and the romantic love Interest appeal to the simpler emotions White Whittlesey Is a very sympathetic Eric Temple He does not imitate Henry Miller slavishly but brings In his own quality of manliness and he takes clever advantage of the extraordinarily careful study which that actor made of the detail of the play He was received all through with great warmth and had to make a speech which was very spontaneous and feeling The supporting cast was strong and the piece moved with a smoothness not very common on first nights Bertha Creighton appeared as the young lady who was so sentimentally in love with the composer and the role is quite easily within her powers Oza Waldrop was a sweet and Ingenuous Alice Temple and Adele Bel garde had been specially engaged for Lady NeviUe In which she acted ad mirably George Osbourne was Lord Neville and dignified Sir Geoffrey was a trifle heavy and the comedy parts were not quite ell worked up but the entire presentation was worthy and Heartsease may have a run at the Alcazar The second week of Mary Mannerlngs engagement at the Columbia Theater opened last night before a large and well pleased audience The star has made a charming hit in her production of Clyde Fitchs modern comedy The Stubbornness of Geraldlne and the demand for seats Is such as to warrant It being continued for a third week The strength of the supporting company ana the thoroughness of the stage settings are attractive factors Matinees of The Stubbornness of Geraldlne are given on Wednesday and Saturday The next Columbia attraction will be Sothern in his beautiful play and uroductlon If 1 Were King Over 0 mmmmmmmmm sSSSa SfOnafsBaBasaBS
