Bakera fleld and Los Anceles Railway Company which nti Incorporated a few eeks ago with a blaring of trumpets will abandon th project for which It waa called into existence that of con structine a line over the Tehachapi mountain It is admitted that negoUatlons looking to the establishment of a permanent trackatre arrangement are under way and while there is no absolute certainty that the Santa Fe will be granted the privilege of operating Its freight and paabenger trains over the Southern Pacific tracks there are strong indications that the arranre raept will be made This will save the Santa Fe the enormous coet of parallel ing the Southern Pacific line over the Tehachapi range which it Is roughly estimated would amount to something Between eJ000000 and KWOOOO In case the trackage arrangement is not made the proposed line of the Bakersfleld and Loe Angeles Railway from Bakersfleld to the nearest point on the Santa Fe could be butlt and placed In operation according to the estimates of Engineer Storey of the Valley Road within six months after the completion of the line between Stockton and Point Richmond Engineer Storey said yesterday that six months would be required to perfect the survey through the Tehachapi mountains and the construction of the road including the building of a tunnel about one and a half miles in length would take eighteen months longer Mr Storey says however that it is entirely feasible to build a temporary track over the summit of the range at comparatively little expense and that such a road could be finished within a year from the time the sur eva are completed This would leave the companj In a position to build the long tunnel at Its leisure The track over the summit would reach an elevation of 200 or 4300 feet at its highest point The proposed tunnel would save a climb of 400 or 500 feet and at the same time would shorten the line about five miles According to these estimates the Santa Fe could connect with the line in the San Joaquin valley In six months after the completion of the road to Point Richmond which It is declared will not be ready for operation until September or October of next ear It Is more than probable however Judging from recent developments that this line will not ha to be built The Valley Road directors candidly admit that if the Santa Fe secures the trackage right if is now after the necessity for the proposed new line south of Bakersfleld will be entirely removed Vice President Watt said yesterday that the public need not expect to see the Santa Fe operate the Valley Road inside of a year The Santa Fe he declared will have to sever its existing traffic arrangement with the Southern Pacific when It takes the Valley Road for a terminal connection and it cannot afford to do this until the Valley Road is built to Point Richmond and establishes a ferry service to brtng its freight and passengers into San Francisco The Valley Road is being credited with an Interest in the proposed ferry enterprise of the Realty Syndicate which has announced its Intention to build a pier Into the bay at Emeryville and put on a line of modern ferry boats between there and San Francisco The Realty Syndicate which controls thosa of Oaklands street railroads not controlled by the Southern Pacific Company proposes to compete for some of the local passenger traffic between San Francisco North Oakland and Berks ley and employ its electric line to distribute the business It is said that the Valley Road may see Its way clear later to extend its line southward from San Pablo to Emeryville and utilize the ferry for its passenger business at the same time effecting an entrance into Oakland which with the suburban towns embraces a sufficient population to warrant a transcontinental railroad in making it a station on its line The Valley Road directors cannot be induced to admit however that the proposed enterprise of the Realty Syndicate interests them in the slightest particular They declare that neither the Valley Road nor Claus Spreckels individually nor the Spreckels coIlectU ely are back of the enterprise which they say is too remote a possibility to warrant them in thinking of utilising it for the handling of their passengers CARELESS OF COUNTY COIN Reformation anniversary ftitiTaVon tooer jmn in in cnurcn iiT Ajaiaa the pastor wltr denver a offers more advantages and facil ities than would a ferry from Emeryville said Vice President Watt It really does not make any difference to a nassenger who comes In on an overland train whether he is twenty minutes or half an hour on the bay By running our fen from Point Richmond we will save a distance of several miles That is to aay the distance from the crossing of the tracks at San Pablo to San Fran cisoo via Point Richmond is several miles shorter than via Emeryville The people who are back of the Emeryville ferry project have been after us ever since the Valley Road was Incorporated to Join in the proposed enterprise It has never appealed to us however The cost of building and maintaining a pier extending three miles out Into the bay would be enormous and we have not the money to put into such an undertaking Another objectionable feature Is that a ferry operated between here and Emeryville would be carried on with great risk and much danger The boats would have to cross the path of the Southern Pacific ferry boats and would run great danger of collisions In foggy weather Our ferry to Point Richmond will be operated north of Goat island Our boat would be out of the track of all other ferry boat8 the moment It left the slip on this side of the bay As for reaching Oakland that Is a problem that can be easily solved when the time comes There is nothing to prevent the building of ft fast electric line from San Pablo to Oakland for the handling of passengers and baggage Such a line would be no longer than the electric line from Haywards to Oakland which Is a big success I do not say that this win be dons but it would be feasible In spite of the denials of the officers of the Valley Rpad however it Is Insisted la other quarters that the Valley Road will extend its tracks to Emeryville when tbi Santa Fe assume control of the property and that freight yards will ba established In that neighborhood for the accommodation of such traffic as will hanoiea to vta
