Masks which are incredibly thin, made of a transparent plastic less than one tenth of a wave length of light, are being photographed by the electron microscope. The masks are of the polished faces of samples of metal. After rouge and all other scientific ingenuity has done its utmost in polishing a flat metal surface, the face is still full of hills and valleys, peaks and pits. The plastic masks, when peeled off such a polished surface, retain on the under side the impression of these irregularities. The result is that the thickness of the film varies greatly, despite its unbelievable thinness.

When placed under an electron microscope, this plastic mass permits the electrons to pass through to the photographic film. But less electrons get through the thicker parts of the mask, since electrons have very little penetrating power. The result is a shadow photograph of X-ray type, where the shadows are light or dark, exactly like the patterns of hills and valleys in the mask. The photograph therefore is a perfect picture of the face of the polished metal, despite the fact that the electron eye never saw this face. By this system the electron microscope enlarges the irregularities of the metal face by about 20,000 diameters.

Free Traffic Code Copies Proposed The advisability of offering "something more than a transfer number" to be used in 1943 instead of metal automobile license plates was discussed Tuesday by the supervisors. Supervisor Philip N. Sing suggested that each automobile registrant be given a free copy of the traffic code, which sells at 50 cents, with each $1 automobile registration fee paid.
