1 List logs a gain NEW YORK (UPI) Selected buying helped push stocks higher Tuesday. But the slow turnover following Monday's Fourth of July holiday indicated the market lacked conviction. Analysts said investors were uncertain about the economy's outlook. Some economists have predicted a second-half slowdown. A decline in the government's economic indicators added weight to the slowdown argument.

Author Vladimir Nabokov is dead MONTREUX, Switzerland (UPI) Vladimir Nabokov, whose novel "Lolita," about a middle-aged man's lust for a 12-year old nymphet created a literary furor in the mid-1950s, has died at the age of 78, his family said Monday. Nabokov, who also won international renown as a lepidopterist an expert on butterflies died Saturday in Lausanne of an infection caused by an unidentified virus, his widow said.

Funeral arrangements had not been announced. Nabokov had been ailing for 18 months and was able to write as he usually did, standing at a lectern, for only brief periods at a time, his widow said. Born to a well-off family April 23, 1899, in St. Petersburg, now Leningrad, Nabokov learned English before he could read Russian and published his first poems in 1914. When World War II broke out, Nabo- kov took his family to the United States and lectured on butterflies, literature and languages at Harvard, Cornell and other universities.

He became a U.S. citizen in 1945. Nabokov's Russian-language works had been recognized in literary circles for three decades before he published "Lolita" in 1955. But the book brought him enough money to move into a suite in the Palace Hotel in 1964 and devote himself to writing and roaming the world in search of rare butterflies.
