met Weber ind Fields without the medium 1 of a translator for the first time last nlerht and llkrd th real thing so well that a big audience kept crying Oliver Twist like for more until some minutes after midnight The special which brought the aggregation to California did not cover the distance quite as rapidly as expected and when the noted funists made their bow last night they were plainly under the Impression that Mission street Is a good deal farther from Broadway than itrealiyis reception peculiar to ihls climate helped to adjust them however and before the middle of Whopp had been reached they had steadied to the realization that wild and woolly applies to nothing west of Kansas and the rest of the splendid performance went wjth a swing that must nave been as satisfying to the players astit was delightful to the auditors Jo vVeber Lew Fields Lillian Russell Mabel Fentori Louts Mann late of San Francisco Charley Ross Peter Dalley and John Kelly received prolonged and assuring Individual receptions when they came on and the clever spectacular giddy chorus girls learned that there was enough of the good feeling for them to haye aj full share From floor to celling vthe Grand Opera house was packed and the between space was filled with people to Its mathematical limit Such a first night should alone be a guarantee that Jammed houses willbe the rule through the merry fortnight and is an answer iight off the reel to the question of whether New York can Bend Its best in this line to far away San Francisco with safety The comparison with Fischers Was inevitable The local company which has been Joking and singing4 and laughing its way througiv the Weber Field pror ductlons for so many months had given every theatergoer an inkling of what the real thing might be like But the iFlscher crowd of the past months has been more than an Imitation In some respects After the show of last night it is easy to see that jfiscnero has developed some Individualities of Its own Inv the foyer it was freely said hat when it comes down tothe funny German comedian Weber fc Fields do not entirely wipe out the memory of Kolb and Dill Kolb and IJlll are funny but Weber Fields are finished as well The estimate applies to the whole per formance of the two companies And besides Weber Fields make no effort to be the whole things There care other stars and bright ones in their snow jnere is something about the Weber Fields performance which grows upon the audience 1 lsafnaw and complete comedy art Care and Infinite palps do not stop wlth providing brilliant accessories but go on to make a full and harmonious comedy The daxzllng raxsllng part of it Is brought on so naturally that the effect Is attained without any consciousness of the effort When the curtain went down after the first part it had to come uphalt a dozen times and the audience would not be satisfied until Charey Ross voicing the feelings of Weber and Fields who stood by in the makeup of marble statues had said some ry nice things to the audience and Miss Russell had curtsied and expressed her great pleasure at being among those present Whoop Dee Doo In two whoops le4 the bllU the second part being a clever burlesque pf Catherine For real wit and humor exploded opportunely theplece beats any of the Weber Flelds showswhlcti had Jbeen seetf here It is not Wholly different from them however for the audience had heard before that a true friend is one who knows you are no good and can forget It and the comedians knew iti but they evened with expla nations that ideas are just dreams except that you dont wake up that Octopus lsJust a part of the year which comes before Noyember and that when it comes to horses to dope or not to dope that is the handicap In fact there are barrels of fun brand new The choruses reminded of the Itogers Brotnersgirjs who kick and dance and sing and wink only rnore so Some of the effects vf ere as new as they were brilliant The fat that the original Catherine has never been sfeen Tiere detracted not one whit from the keen burlesque which is broad enough to carry jtself Weber and Fields are earnestly funny If their humor Is lower to captivate than that of Kb and Dill it is a deal more sattiylng when it has you going In ecod part of the show they appear pv as Ger mans but as bad ooya ftr4 they are quite as funny the ih Lillian Rusi i sua be called the fair Yer rv fne was on the stage last hi i aed in face and figure much the same as she did when she was here last7 eleven years ago at the Baldwin singing in The Mountebanks arid other operas She has developed since almost into a comedienne arid she has caught the trick of the Weber and Fields specialty with great aptitude while the placidity with which she used to go through the operas has been fitted by the concocters of those Weber and Fields pieces She answers as pat to the repartee business as any of them and holds her own against the masters of that kind of dialogue The innocent appearance helps her considerably indeed She sang several numbers last night and the voice had much of the old clear and attractive sweetness in its tones She did not venture into exacting music but kept to numbers appropriate to the situation She had plenty of applause for her singing On the Boulevard In Dreamland and Maid of Timbuctoo were all up to her reputation and she had a uet with Ross that was very cleverly done Louis Mann we have knowri before He Is a San ancisc6 boy and has been for many years one of the acknowledged beat German and character comedians on the stage He would not be In Weber and Fields If he had not won that reputation and he Is one of the roost prominent features if not in respect of a finished performance of an absurd part the most prominent The German is a ridiculously exaggerated role but Mann aimost convinces you it is perfectly reasonable and he makes It really a study in comedy How hard that is to do to makehdrseplay ever seem comedy erybody can see One of the cleverest as weR as most ridiculous parts bf his performance was his grief over the ehlckens his pet chickens which had been cooked and were about tq be eaten Tie emotion could not have been more genuine apparently If he had beea weeping over some of his family Although he kept within the limits of comedy and even when he kicked the little Dutchman It was quite a plausible proceeding Peter Dalley we know very well and we knowthat the kind of work he has here Is exactly what hX has been doing for a great many years In this environment Ills peculiarly amusing manner and his quick sharp talking make well the points with which all Weber Fields stuff bristles Mabel Fenton fills the line In which tFay Templeton shines excellently Ross aa a turfman and KJohn TV KellyastKe retired contract or were admirable The production Is the work of Ben Teal also one of Californias contributions to the stage and Mr Teal is next to David Belasco the moist poted stage manager to day SEHII3 THEEE BOYS TO THE COUNTY William Hogari and WUlIam Miles were eaiphsent to the County Jail by Police Judge Mogan yesterday for six months representing two charges of petty Alvlnza Hayward one of the oldest and most famous of the California pioneers is not expected by his physicians to live throughout the day During the last twenty fpuc hours he has been sinking rapidly of the car and was rendered unconscious by his head striking the rati At the Central Emergency Hospital wheye theinjured man was removed it was found that he had sustained a con cusslonof the brain He also suffered a badly iascerated wound of the lower lip His condition was not considered serious EEXTLED OW OF COURT The uit of Bradbury against the Fiorlston Pulp and Paper Company forcpmpensatpn for acting as superintendent at the comparys works was dismissed yesterdayby agreement of all parties The trial of the case was be gun before Judge Seawell and after devoting several days to taking testimony the parties reached asettlement cut of WUrt 5i act is a striking and effective scene In costuming and acessories it Is quite a fine production and the plot is InterestingInteresting and has some very strong situations It is badly written however and the dialogue never rises to the dignity and strength of the characters It is an imitation not more of the old legitimate drama with some pretensions which it does not fulfill It drags which is not ajl the fault of th authors It needs a big dramatist to handle such a theme as Alexander and as It begins with Alexanders youin neeas a more youimui ana more fiery actor than Louis James to jlay the part which indeed is vapid at lest and only the secondary acting character after all Still there are some opportunities given the actor if he could be convincing It seems as if Mr James would have been better cast for Perdiccas the villain who is a long way the best conceived and carried cut figure in the play It Ir another Iago in commonplace so to speak Mr Warde acts it with weight arid precision but neither of the stars seemed lest night to put any fire into the piece and the surrounding company is more pictorial than histrionic The entire performance leaves the pictorial effect most vivid even although there are several strong dramatic features The only really sympathetic touch Is ii the character of Roxane played by Alma Kruger whose febrile temperament and simple womanly spirit show In noticeable contrast to the rather ponderous movements of the others Norman Hackett has In CJltus a role so badly written that a less earnest performance would make it funny and Miss Engel Sumnerwho doesnot seem to have had much experience1 had rather a hard time of It with Cleopatra a very conventional Jealous woman of the legitimate drama The whole environment of the three cen trar characters as arranged by the authors is amateurish and feeble Next week the two stars will give a Shakespearean repertoire Roly Poly a hodge podge of music arid funny stage business concocted by Will Carleton and Lee Johnson local people was put on at Fischers Theater last evening and went merrily with the usual large first night audience holding most of them to the very end although it ran until near 12 oclock The plot has a kind of melodramatic idea but it Is carried through three acts with the aid of tuneful songs and clever comedy work The music is rather better than most of the musical cornecies we have had but the book Is not yery original although the situations and the familiar horseplay have been cleverly reconstructed The Germans are given agood chance with their tangled conversation and stage business and in the first act they get off amusing dialogue relative Ao the methods at the race track The Hebrew has a less Important part in this production while an Irish character is put to the front Kolb an Dlir were In their familiar roles and with Dillon as the Irishman made up a lively trio Curtis
