put has been a doll week In porting circles and the coming even days will be barrel of exciting events The Osk Leal Wheelmens meet at Stockton was tbe eTent of chief interest Bicycle people re sow looking forward to the Capital City Wheelmen meet on October 21st at Sacra mento Blowhard pugilists in the Xaat an talking at Jsmes Corbett bat be dm given Jackson the preference lor Mi next match The Smith Elddons Hawklns Kllleen Griffin Lynch and Meber Smlth fights are attracting attention in pugilistic circles Kennel owners are preparing for the coursing meet scon to take place at Merced Pugilism An erroneous Impression exists in the minds of many people that George Siddons who is to meet Solly Emkh at the California Athletic Club on tbe 30th Inst Is Old Man Siddons once a pnglllit of note bat who saw bis best oar long ago Tbe man now training for battle with Smith is young strong athletta a good stayer and a hard puncher besides which be knows a few things aboot the science of boxing He Is training hard and has the advantage of gaining a few pointers on Smiths method of fighting from Dal Hawkins who was defeated by gmitb Tbe lad from Loa Angeles will add a good sized feather to his cap if he succeeds in defeating Siddons and will be in line for a championship battle Smith knows be has a bard customer to deal with and he Is working harder than ever he did before to get himself into condition His admirers have made him a faTonte inthebeitirg the odda nowbing 10 to 7 Applications for membership in the California Athletic riubare being presented at a lively rate by people anxions to see the buttle and a cnwded hous is expected On the 27th Insi DU Hawkins and Jack Kil Jeen will try couclu ions before the newly or gsnired Palo Alto Club The fight will be preceded by a number of minor contests Kllleen and Hawkins are both clever men and the publio expect to witness an evenly matched pair The contest will be held in the California Llubsold rooms on tbe corner of New Montgomery and Howard streets Combinations are In order on the fonr coming events The favorites are Smith Hawkins Haber and Griffin The announcement that Joe Choynskl has decided to fight in the middle weight class has surprised his friends here who did not think he could reduce bla weight so mncb and still be in good condition The fact that he is matched with George Godfrey Is hailed with pleasure in this city where Chovnski is a Erime favorite His friends think be will sTe no trouble poluhing oil the Boston colored man uirbett has taken the right position in refusing to box with Goddard or Mitchell until tbey have met Peter Jackson and demon strated what they can do against a really clever man The champion has no time to aste on second raters He concedes Jacksons right to another match and announces that in good time be will meet him The colored Australian in his usual business like way has taken the proper course He quietly cbal lenged the Call fornlan and allowed tbe matter to rest there Corbett accented the challenge and announced that a date will be selected at tbe conclusion of bis theatrical season There will be no loud talk about it Jackson knows Corbett intends to keep his Word and Corbett knows Jacksons challenge was bona ode and not a bluff made for advertising purposes Here is what Jim Daly sparring partner and trainer of Corbett says of the champions style of bitting He doesnt swing as Sullivan doe but strikes straight out like a flash recovering instantly Instead of following up the blow wtth a push In this way he will get in two licks where most men would get in one Jim seldom knocks a man over backward that isnt his stvle His sham raos are in tended to jar his opponent and daze him A man so affected is apt to fall frontward slowly groping lor tbe floor and the spectators sometimes thing he is playing off last to get a lew seconds breathing spell Its not so I tell von for Ive been there myself Theres no man living who bits just the way Jim Corbett does and few if any who can make a blow tell as be can and this accounts for the fact that reany bare thought bit best knockouts were put up lobs because bis men seemed to give in so easily Somehow or other Corbett was not a favorite in the betting in California says the New Or earn Picayune The leading members of tbe California Athletic Club expected him to get hipped when matenea him against Jack eu Its rood intentions miscarried but nought the handsome Californians time had aome when he had the bernihood to lace Sum an The Call fornlan are ordinarily very good ldges bnt in Corhetts case they seem to have been blinded by prejudice Probably it wan be cause Corbett was not friendly with the club ana was one ox tne leading spirits oi tne uiym tic Clnh a niiriMits of the New Orleans insti Ntion One of the excellent iudg who went rong was Major Frank McLaughlin who is ild to have lost heavily on Built van However ne is one of the manly sort of critics who is aulck to admit his error And praise the cnampion A preeminent Corbett man in this city telegraphed the result to the Major and received the following reply Many thanks for telegram Hearty congratulations on your good judgment iXHDeii must nave improvea mar Teloual Two Philadelphia men had a queer wagertin the SmliTan Corbett fight The Sullivan man agreed that if nla lavorite did not win he would walk on his hands and feet from Glrard avenue to Spring Garden street Not to be out done his friend agreed to stand on the corner of Sixth and Glrard avenue and sing Comrades should Corbett lose It was late at night when the loser commenced his walk tnere being but lew people present when he started The nnique and startling sight of a man walking on nis nana and leet soon attracted a big crowd and bV tbe time the uniortunete man had reached Spring Garden street a crowd ot suo people were laughing and jeering film As soon as ne completed nis pilgrimage he rushed to the Beading Railroad depot and ordering a coupe instructed the driver to drive home as apidly as possible George Weltv manager of John Kellys Mcree ot Dublin theatrical company mint he can whip Corbett He sent from Omaha a
