Beaten in the first round, George said, "Well, I guess I took too many strokes." ANOTHER GENT FAMOUS FOR THE ALIBI HE CONCOCTED IS JACK DEMPSEY. AT PHILADELPHIA AFTER THE TUNNEY FIGHT HE SAID, "I FORGOT TO DUCK." The ancient Jack Quinn, pitching in the recent Macks- Yanks series, was asked by a teammate what was the mat- ter out there. Grandpa Quinn explained that the New York people were hitting the swell- est things he could throw. And that historic excuse attributed to the captain and quarterback of a Big Ten team last year after one of the enemy backs broke through and ran 75 yards for a touchdown, it was this: "Nobody had a gun." MM The time has come to talk of raccoon coats, freshman caps and the awful state of the football rules. They asked Nick Altrock about an intricate football rule the other day.
