frightened the birds to suen an extent that at the nMst crack of a jrnn In the morning theyjlght out from tha island in tearcrto pastorts near It is likely that before the expiration ot another week the island will be leased as a preserve Local sports now hare the matter in hand Frank Staples made a bag of some twenty birds last Sunday near Burdsells Staples ia a sportsman commonly known asthe freshman classes of tbe University of California and tbe Stanford University Last year negotiations were pending between the two universities for a freshman game but the whole matter ended in discussion When arrangements were made for this years big intercollegiate game it was also settled that the freshmen were to play on the second Saturday succeeding Thanksgiving day This game no doubt will establish a precedent and football enthusiasts in California will have the opportunity ot witnessing two intercollegiate contests each year While the freshmen in tbe two universities hare played during the entire season they have had little time for team practice not having begun to play together until after the intercollegiate struggle of November 29th Previous to that date the freshmen ot both universities who were candidates tor positions oh the Varsity played with either the second or the first eleven During the last week they have been exerting every fiber in their bodies and a good game may be looked for this afternoon At Berkeley apon the departure of the big team for their San Francisco quarters Captain Blasisgame called for freshman football men to go to the campus A host responded and steady practice has been the order ever since Material changes were made in the team when the freshmen who were substituted on tbe Varsity team returned to take a place on their class team For the last week tbe Berkeley freshman team has been ablv coached by Benson Pierce Morse Ed Sherman Wit tenmeyer and others Tbe line up of the team this afternoon will be as follows Wilbur 180 pounds center Winkle 175 right guard Avery 173 left guard Ferguson 168 right tackle Morgan 158 or Ebrlght 153 left tackle Baugh 123 right end Hopper 130 left end Blasingame 140 quarter Baker 135 right half Dozier or Hoppe left halt and Hockheimer 152 full back Tne Berkeley boys are convinced that they lost the Thanksgiving day game on a fluke and are going to try and even np matters a little to day The Stanford fellows realize that if they succeed in this game they can howl about their football superiority over Berkeley until next Thanksgiving with no one to say them nay The Stanford freshmen bad never lined up until lat Saturday and the bad weather of this week has prevented any great amount of practice Team work will be an unknown quantity to day Tola will make kicking a necessity so that tbe play will be open and more interesting to spectators even if it does riot satisfy the experts TfV Guile fttatne Therewilibe a double bill of Gaelic football at Central part to morrow to test by experienced tbe effect of tbe late rains on duck shooting A long run of fine weather bad rather stood in the way of sport on the marshes The birds have been loafinc on the bay and so long as the weather re mained perfect they could not oe inaucea flv inland As a conseauence the ma jor portion of the shooting until last week was along tne Day snore wutcn was iaiuj lined with ducks all the wavfrom Hent ers point to Dumbarton That tne heavy rains wnien commenced last Sunday will greatly change the location of the birds may be accepted as a fact The tendency will be to improve shooting in the interior provided that continued mild weather unaccompanied by a cold snap should not contribute to scatter tbe ducka over too great au expanse of country A good frost wiilmilitate against such a result and tend to centralize the birds in the deep water marshes Every indication points such a distribution of the birds as will insure tetter sport from this time until well into the new year At Snisnn and tip river points the shooting should be very good during the holiday week which is a time when many sportsmen arrange ior their one big shoot of the year Visitors to the marshes adjacent to the bay both on the Alviso and San Mateo sides met with very poor success last Sunday So bags of any size were made except on tne bay shore and they were few and far between It must bar been discouraging to the patient hunlers Who from their blinds could see countless thousands of ducks floating on the aur face of the bay just ont of range Had there been a storm Sunday hunters both on the shore and inland on the marshes would have bad tine sport As It was the shooters at Mowreys Alviso and Belmont met with very sltght success At Belmont the only birds on the marsh were teal and even they were byno means numerons The best bag reported was nine birds to three men Aside from a few malards and one lone sprig these men did not tee a single olg duck on the marsh during the entire day The ehoottng at Alviro on the opposite side of the bay was even poorer than at Belmont 12 Hosmer Street arid a mutual friend managed to bag between them just one bird All three claimed an interest
