receivea A few weeks ago Pllllbos Ohannesian an Armenian rug merchant who recently arrived here from Seattle was the redplent of a letter from his mother in Europe conveying tbe sad Intelligence that all the members of his family with the exception of herself and one daughter had been massacred Their home having been destroyed by their ruthless persecutors they were reduced to extreme poverty and Ohannesian at once took steps to relieve their distress by sending money to them through the medium of the Red Cross Society and Mission Board of Boston He then made preparations to return to his native land but concluded to defer doing so for the present on account of the unsettled condition of affairs there and is still here Yesterday he was the recipient of a letter written in Turkish from Kasslm Bffendi president of the City Coundl of the city of Palou in Armenia which considerably surprised him It was to the effect that with the exception of one of his brothers who died some weeks prior to the writing of the letter all of Ohanneslans relatives were safe In the residence of the writer They were however In the direst poverty and needed money Immediately A postscript purporting to have been written by Obannesians mother In formed him that she had been compelled to borrow money from Beklr Effendi another Turkish city omctai in order to subsist and Impressed upon him the necessity for an immediate remittance Appended to this again was another postscript in the Armenian language written in pencil by a relative of Ohannesian and who is now languishing In Turkish jail on account of his religi ous belief This was to the effect that Ohanneslans mother and sister were safe at the house of an Armenian friend and working for their living onanne i sian was warned not to pay attention to what others wrote to him and in case he ever sent money to his folks he was advised to send It through Armenian friends only Under these circumstances Ohannesian is convinced that the Original letter Is a deep laid scheme upon the part of the Turkish officials at Palou his native town to Induce him to send further funds for the relief of his aged mother which they would promptly appropriate Unfortunately owing to the existing condition of affairs In Armenia Ohannesian is debarred from taking steps to ascertain the truth qf the matter and even should he succeed in proving the letter to be a forgery he does not believe the Turkish Government would at the instigation of an Armenian punish the offenders Until he hears from his mother again and learns from her what became of his previous remittances Ohannesian will remain here 1 diffusion of EiraoTMEirr Cheapened Processes Arsaeat Hn aia Happiness From the standpoint of art that is a very bad thing but from the standpoint of enjoyment It Is a very good hint said Professor A Ross In the course of his lecture last night on The SoeialDiffuslon of Happiness He had traced the social evolution of man through successive stages down to the present day of cheap processes for tne reproduction of great paintings books and for the diffusion of Icnowledge and the elevation of mens Intelligence and In summing up tbe results made use of those words 3y his argument he endeavored to show that whatever had the effect of reaching the masses of uplifting them in intelligence and percep tlon was a great blessing notvrlth standing the popular tendency to decry everything that was cheap Chromoa cheap hooka and papers had enabled the poor to enjoy and to know the masterpieces pt poin arc ana juera enjoyment was increased placed upon the picture Is a mass of gold fashioned by a master hand and studded with gems It represents something over 1100000 In value There were present more than forty Bishops Including Archbishop Corrigan of Jiew York and many other Americans and hundreds of priests The tradition of Our Lady of Guadeloupe Is a pretty one The Virgin appeared to Juan Diego a simple shepherd on his way to church In the city on November 12 1521 at a point three miles outside the capital and asked that a church be built to her honor at a spot which she indicated When the simple Juan presented himself to Bishop Zumarraga a Franciscan his story was disbelieved Juan insisted upon the reality of his angelic vision and was sent back for proofs As he neared the spot he saw the beautiful woman again She repeated her request and when Juan asked her for proofs bade him go to some bare rocks above the roadway and gather roses He did so and partly filled his serape with the flowers When he sought tbe Blsbop and opened the blanket there upon it was the figure of a beautiful woman drawn as no artist could paint it There were religious and civil inquiries of a mosr serious nature and the event was accepted as a miracle There is the blanket stillwith Its wondrous imprint to baffle the doubterj The painting seems a combination of all the arts of the brush and pencil and no artist who has sought to copylt has duplicated the exquisite beauty tbe deep sorrow of that face A beautiful church ra erected on the spot and above the richest shrine la tbe picture A chapter of canons conduct the church to which pilgrimages are often made These are espedally frequent around the anniversary of the feast which Is If ovember 12th After the ceremonies went to Jalisco at the request of Archbishop Alar con He Is
