Out 01 All Dancer The handsome Oakland residence of George Perkins Jr son of United States Senator George Perkins was the scene yesterday of a sensational occurrence which might have had a tragic ending Mrs Perkins while at luncheon with her two small children was taken suddenly 111 under circumstances which were surrounded afterward with much mystery The first story heard in Oakland was to the effect that Mrs Perkins had taken poison either by accident or with suicidal Intent This story gained currency because of the peculiar wording of a telephone message sent by Mrs Perkins maid summoning Dr Mc Canley The message reported that Mrs Perkins whsn taken suddenly sick exclaimed la her maid I have taken something I ought not to have and I am going to die Members of Mrs Perkins family were summoned and reached the hoirse In advance of the physician Word was sent to the husband in this city but for reasons not explained be did not put In an appearance until late in the afternoon Dr McCauley visited the house In company with Dr Bill and found Mrs Perkins unconscious For a time the condition of the patient was regarded as serious but prompt treatment however brought about a change for the better snd at 7 oclock In the evening It wis announced that she was out of dangsr and resting easily According to the story nrst told by the maid Mrs Perkins seemed to be perfectly well when she appeared at luncheon Hardly had the meal beer finished however when she called to her servants to get her some mustard and water at once It was then and while apparently In much pain that he It said to have riven utterance to th exclamation I have taken romethlnK that I ought not to have I am dying and then with a gasp she repeated Bring me some mustard and water quick Following this latter exclamation she if declared to have fallen In a swoon The servants carried their mistress to her room and then as stated messages were sent to Dr McCauley and members of the family This story credited to the maid was published In an Oakland evening paper When a Chronicle reporter visited the house last night the maid appeared In company with a brother and sister of Mrs Perkins The members of the family were close mouthed and an entirely different story was furnished by the maid She could not recall that Mrs Perkins had made the exclamation reported or had In any way given the Impression that she had taken poison The maid admitted however that she furnished her mistress with mustard and water but did cot vouchsafe information as to whether or not It was used a an emetic The brother and sister of Mrs Perkins were much excited and It was quite evident that all the members of the family had been much alarmed In an interview the brother declared that his sister was simply suffering from nervous hysteria Mrs Perkins he said was a woman of highly nervous temperament and he thought she had overtaxed herself in attendance on the recent carnivals at Santa Cruz and San Jose Neither brother nor slater would have it that Mrs Perkins had taken any drag poisonous or otherwise and scouted the idea of any attempt at suicide This story was somewhat of a surprise Inasmuch as one of the physicians had previously admitted to a representative of the Chronicle that Mrs Perkins had taken a dose of some drug The nature of the dose was not stated but It was to be Inferred from the fact that JMrs Perkins had to be walked up and down the floor of her room In order to keep her from falling Into a state of jcoma It seemed to be the idea of the doctor that Mrs Perkins had accldent aUrlUkeir an overdose of drnzto the use of which ah had keen accustomed The aIarmorMTPttkQ relatives waa ahaxed or the relaUvea of her htuv band Word was promptly sent to the conducted by Father Crpw ey upon a higher plane of usefulness than is possible in Its present location When the directory was first founded at the corner of Tenth and Howard streets Its projectors hardly expected such results from It as have been achieved In the past few years Originally Intended as a temporary home for homeless boys Its scope has been gradually extended until In a measure It has become a reformatory institution In its present Iocs in the heart of the city It is difficult to place sufficient restraint upon the Inmates to attain the objects for which the superintendent and staff of officers work In the Eaitern States what are known as protectories have been successfully established for years They are usually located near large cities on some fertile tract of land where the boys have ample opportunities for out of door exercise and at the same time are taught trades which will render them independent men when thy reach their majorities This plan Archbishop Rlordan contemplates putting Into practice here To do this It will be necessary to secure a large tract of land convenient to the city and at the same time salubrious as regards climate Upcn this it is proposed to erect the new directory buildings This will require a large sum of money The main revenue of the directory Is derived from a quarterly publication known as the St Joseph Union sold for Jl a year which brings In a revenue of about J4000 The annual expense of conducting the directory is about 110000 and an average of over 500 boys have befn annually cared for It Is proposed thi year to hold a carnival of nations In the Mechanics Pavilion about the middle of October which will be conducted on a large scale Already a number of meetings have been held at which the subject has been discussed and many arrangements have been completed A meeting will be held at the Youths Directory to night to discuss some new features which It Is proposed to incorporate In the affair A large number of ladies and gentlemen from all over the city are Interested in the work A boys without regard to creed are taken at the directory Father Crowley looks for assistance from all classes of people The directory said Father Crowley last eight does not receive one cent from the city or State In the way of assistance Instead It saves the city thousands of dollars annually For if count the support of the boys taken from the prisons whom the city would have to support if sent to the County Jail an Increase In the tax levy would naturally result I am not speaking of the moral Influences which are exerted over them for the Jail association only makes criminals of them and adds more to their cost Among the features that will be Introduced at the coming festival are autograph letters from Gladstone and Charles Stewart Parnell In hit letter the Premier speaks highly of the work of the directory These letters will be raffled together with many other valuable things Including a number of curiosities from Ireland Barker an Englishman 2 years of age reildlrg at 1020 Howard treet died suddenly while attending a prayer meeting at Calvary Presbyterian Church Union square at 845
