A Pan Am Inaugural Flight touches down at Papeete and musicians and dancers come out to greet the guests I 4 Visitor at sphinx and pyramid memorial at Kuringai Chase near Sydney. The wonder world Down Under that once was remote as a star is now as near as your nearest jet-age airfield. Pan American World Airways recently inaugurated two new jet routes across the South Pacific: Los Angeles-Tahiti-Auckland and return; and West Coast-Honolulu-Fiji-Auckland-Sydney, and return.

The flight from Los Angeles to Sydney, via Honolulu, takes 19V4 hours. What permitted the new swings across the Pacific was the opening of the new $30 million jet-age airport at Man-gere, 18 miles south of Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city. New Zealand is an enchanting place, which lies squarely along the tourist and trade routes of the South Pacific. The country is about the size of Colorado. There are two main islands stretching about a 1,000 miles.

It is a land of breathtaking beauty hundreds of sharp-ribbed mountains mantled with snow; well-tended farms, the grass green as jade (they drop superphosphates from the air to keep the grass well fertilized).
