Orchids dropped by a small plane drifted down in an azure sky flecked with fleeting white clouds as the body of one of Hawaii's best-known singers and composers slipped beneath the waves and descended to the ocean depths. The burial at sea took place shortly before 1 p.m. .1.9 miles offshore from the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, at Latitude 21 degrees, 15 minutes north and Longitude 157 degrees 49.8 minutes west in waters 500 to 600 feet deep. Ninety people including the crew made the two-hour catamaran journey.

Nine outrigger canoes and crews rendezvoused with the catamaran Ale-Ale Kai off Kuhio Beach and accompanied it out to sea. Several smaller boats and one lone surfer also joined in the ocean procession, while two planes circled overhead, one laden with the 10,000 orchids that were dropped when a flare signal was fired from the catamaran. The plane made another pass over the spot and dipped its wings in tribute. As the body was lowered from the bow of the catamaran, after it had been, moved up from the stern, Mrs. Lee Nani wept for the first time on the voyage.

She was shaken with sobs as she watched the casket fade from sight. Most of the way out to sea, and most of the way back, Kui Lee's recordings, such as 'Lahainaluna" and "I'll Remember You" echoed over the loudspeaker system. The burial at sea followed morning funeral services at Kawaiahao Church. The statement said part of the fluid that had built up in his right lung had been removed and that he is receiving oxygen. Detailed tests and studies are being made but the results are not expected to be announced before Monday afternoon.

Phil Burleson, one of Ruby's lawyers, said it was "too early to tell" how the illness might affect a new trial for his client.
