What do you think of using it indoors? Mrs. P. Maui. Answer I like wrought iron very much as both indoor and outdoor furniture.

First and perhaps most significant is the fact that the project includes a ratio of six square feet for parking space for each square foot of I i r-T3'S JAM i I tional group and place a. long library-type of table at the back of your sofa. Question We have a young baby who has to share a room with an older child.

Is there a temporary solution to separate their belongings? Mrs. K. Kailua. Answer I- would install a traverse track on the ceiling and hang heavy drapery from it. This could be pulled open or shut to give either child privacy.

Each child's clothes and toys could be kept in chests on either side of it. Address YOUR home decoration questions to Imogen Gro-chelle, co Managing Editor, The Star-Bulletin. A psychiatry specialist, and business spokesmen offer different views on the cause of the great do-it-yourself craze that has spread across the nation. The medical man says home handiwork fills great need to begin and conclude piece of work. Business bluntly says the reason is economical and easier because of improved products.

Whatever the reason, the fever has caught on in Hawaii as typified by the interest shown by demonstration onlookers at a recent Lewers Cooke "How-To-Do-lt" Review. What's New In Design Of Windows? Modern windows offer all the sturdy durability of those of yesteryear but they also have the advantage of modern design and engineering features. Windows are styled to admit more sunlight and air, to give better space planning and provide for good arrangement of furniture. Their function may be to give privacy in some rooms or to "go all outdoors" in other rooms. If they are of wood, there are still other performance features.

Wood sash is a natural insulator. WOOD SASH and frames are relatively free from sweating and condensation which defaces paint and trim and can damage draperies, wall covering and floor. Today's windows have simplified operation and effective weather stripping, representing many new types of product design. Yet builders and home owners feel especially friendly to sash because of one of the oldest recognized advantages of the material its workability. If a new house settles and throws windows out of line, the readjustment of wood windows is a comparatively simple and inexpensive matter.

In addition, the home owner who likes to do things himself will find it easier to fit screen or storm sash over wood sash. WOOD WINDOWS do not expand or twist under extreme heat. Neither do they rust or corrode. They can be used as an integral part of the decorative and color styling of a home, since the material itself has character and expression. It may be stained in natural finish or painted to carry out any color plan inside or out.

The conventional double-hung window is still the most widely used, but there is increasing use of casement ood windows and those of the horizontally 'sliding type. Many other types are available, too, for the planner's individual requirements. Role in Industry There is a distince advantage in using a Safety Color Code that is fast gaining acceptance in industry. A worker moving from one plant to another is less likely to become confused. He gets to recognize the well-known "signal" colors.

He automatically memorizes their location. grouping too. I don't feel it will ever take the place of comfortable upholstered pieces in living rooms and I'm worried lest there be an over-use of wrought iron in Honolulu. It seems to have reached a fad stage with every type of accessory imaginable being made in wrought iron. Too much in a home is apt to make a house look very hard while a few pieces, 'particularly on lanais, are in very good taste.

Question My fireplace is seldom used and I don't know what to do with it to make it look nice. Mrs. K.L.N., Honolulu. Answer Plants and paper fans are two of the most liked "fillers" for yawning fireplace openings. A series of potted flowers can be placed in the opening, hung on a fire-screen, or used in various levels on stands.

Paper fans come in gold or silver bickground colors or in many designs and may be purchased through the shopping sections of the decorating magazines. Many people prefer to make their own from attractive wall paper. Question Our lanai becomes very warm from the sun's reflection on the terrace. Is there any way I can control the heat and glare? P.E., Wahiawa. Answer Painting the lanal in cool "water" color tones will help toward a cool illusion.

But I suggest you drape the lanai with outside canvas curtains that will shut out the sun during the hours it is most objectionable. Question I don't like the pieces of furniture that are called room-dividers. Can you suggest another way of separating the dining room from the living room that isn't tricky or Kard to do myself? B.B., Honolulu. Answer Yes just put your sofa in the middle of the room at a right angle to a conversa Do-It-Yourself Craze Aids Health, Saves Cash A multi-billion dollar industry is growing out of your desire to escape the tedium of earning a living. A psychiatrist says "escape" is one of the major reasons for the unprecedented do-it-yourself boom that has swept the country during the last year.

commercial space. This, its sponsors point out with pride, sets a new parking space ratio record for the Territory. Specifically, 980 cars will be accommodated. The Kanohe Ranch Company may seem to be showing farsight in creating a new standard for parking facilities. Actually, they're being quite practical, for the vast majority of customers will come in autos.

-4 The center is to be located at the increasingly important intersection of Kamehameha Highway, Kaneohe Bay Drive, and the new Kalihi Tunnel Access Road, with 14 acres of land mauka of Castle High School set aside for the project. It will include quarters for a large market, drugstore, drive-in bank, garden supply house, dry cleaning shop and, as the company's announcement adds, "other services important to family living." How close the project is to actually signing up tenants wasn't announced but realty observers will agree that this is one shopping center that shouldn't have the slightest difficulty in leasing the shops. Because the surrounding area is just about the "hottest" home development center in Hawaii's history. And the entire story of Kaneohe housing has yet to be told. A "roundup restaurant" atop one of the central buildings is another feature of more than passing interest.

Windward Oahu can well accommodate another modern cafe-restaurant. The "topside" restaurant undoubtedly will take full advantage of the superb setting with lovely Kaneohe Bay on one side and the Koolau mountains on the other. STILL ANOTHER interesting Innovation is the plan for three churches adjacent to the residential areas, thus letting churchgoers use the center's car-park. While many subdivisions set aside space for churches, recognizing them as a distinct asset to a community, this is one of the rare times in which a shopping center as such incorporates churches into its Master Plan. It is no secret that Puohala and Kaneohe Bay Drive residents have felt the need of a large market.

It's to the credit of the Kaneohe Ranch Company that they waited until an even more ambitious project i.e., a full center rather than just a supermarket was warranted. All of this is on' leasehold land, of course, with land leased, as the company says, "on terms which will insure adequate development over a long period of time." The firm of Merrill, Simms and Roehrig has designed the general plans for' the center, which probably is the most ambitious project of its sort since the Aina Haina shops were IT MAY WELL BE that this will be one of the last inclusive suburban shopping centers to be announced on Oahu for a long time to come. Leeward Oahu's housing boom extends from Nanakuli to beyond Waianae, though there is need there for a shopping center of moderate proportion. Kailua's trend has been toward individual shops. And Waimanalo, while growing steadily and with little fanfare, thus far doesn't warrant a multiple-shop project.

The Kaneohe project adds up to a solid investment in Island Living and Oahu's growing legion of home owners. manufacturers agree people are better handymen (or women) than they were a decade ago. Military service and employment in wartime industry gave them a knowledge and a confidence in tools materials that finds its expression in home handiwork.
