The LaFayette had been informed that a blockade had been established against Havana, and warned repeatedly not to try and make an entrance to the harbor, but despite these warnings she endeavored to sneak in. Her effort at blockade running was a failure, however, for in the gray of the morning hours the Nashville discovered her stealing along the shore, and at once headed her off, going in dangerous proximity to shore batteries to accomplish her purpose. The Frenchman hesitated about surrendering, but the threatening aspect of the Nashville's guns and the assurance that did he not heave to he would be blown out of the water, made him give in.
