office George Woods an alleged magnetic healer and slate writer who operated for a few weeks at 597 Ellis street is a much wanted person just at present His sud den popularity may even extend to Captain Lees office if that official can Induce any of Woods alleged victims to affix their names to a complaint Roughly estimated it is said that Woods cleaned up U000 in a few weeks by means of supposed spiritualistic demonstrations and other devices He is described as a man of SO years smooth faced tall and angular That he bad an accomplice Is now considered a certainty although ail those who charge him With swindling admit that he was apparently a lone spiritualist in perfect touch with the world of shades Woods rented a suit of rooms from Mrs Catherine Eredull at 597 Ellis street pay lng 133 for them in advance This was some three montas ago He has always paid bis landlady promptly Two of the rooms he used for his seances and the third it Is said served to conceal his helper whose identity Is not known Woods fonped the acquaintance of Frank Knox of 1211 Folsom street whom he charged 115 for Instruction in slate writing and from him he later borrowed 130 on a note and IS for a development scheme which Knox says he prepared Then he fell in with William Gruppe arother spiritualist who lives at the lndsor Hotel from whom he succeeded in getting the sums of 125 1100 and I10U Each amount was procured at different times and as Gruppe claims on the pretense of turning a fortunate deal In bonds as advised by spirits Woods It Is claimed then joined a circle of local spiritualists and attempted to raffle off among other things a diamond ring which he said belonged to a poor widow in need He attempted to sell tickets on it to sympathetic people at 50 cents each but A Stitt of 5144 Jones street and a Miss Fleming of 108 Sixth street concluded that all was not right and had him run out of a meeting of the cplrftuallsts Then Woods luck turned He had promised to marry a widow It is said and obtained from her several hundred dollars The widow began crowding matters Gruppe pressed nlm for payment of his loans Knox grew dissatisfied and Miss Fleming denounced him as a fraud Then Woods folded his tent and on the evening of February 17th quietly slipped away It la claimed that he has figured In similar difficulties both In Chicago and Portland Oakland branch the right party furniture fixtures and carpets half price capital 12000 to XtOOO Apply to THOMAS xmahun sa siarket st The exact cause will probably never be known as the only man able to through any light on the subject Is hopelessly insane and bis two com panions were blown to atoms It Is believed that the miners were smoking their pipes while preparing their primers at the crosi cut where the powder used In blasting was etored There were a couple of hundred pounds of tbe explosive and the entire lot was set off The only trace of the two men killed was a few of the buttons on their clothes several pieces of silver coin and a few small particles of flesh The annihilation of the men was instan taneous and complete The disaster happened In the early morning one hour and a half before the night watch would have reported off The three men were on the lower level and only a few minutes before the accident had reported verythlnrall right In their Immediate locality Suddenly and without warning a aheet of flame burst out of the main shaft of the mine there was a dull roar and the ground vibrated as from an earthquake shock The entire camp was attracted to the scene and the work of relief started Foreman WD Moodle was the first on the spot and proved himself a hero Without hesitation he tied a wet cloth over his mouth and nostrils and although the gas in the shaft was stifling was let down to the lower leveL In five minutes he had succeeded In finding the unconscious form of James Burke one of the victims and dragged him to the cage As he pulled the signal cord to hoist Moodle fell insensible and the two men were apparently dead when lifted out of the cage Both goon recovered In the opes air Burke in coming to was nothing but a gibbering Idiot The explosion strange to say while destroying the mans reason had in no wise injured him bodily All at Tempts to get any information from him as to how the explosion occurred were fruitless After recovering sufficiently Moodle made a second descent Into the mine trying to find a trace of the other two victims A volunteer relief force accompanied him this time but only tbe buttons money and bits of flesh could be found and these told only too plainly the story of the terrible force of the explosion The explosion was so violent as to wreck the entire lower level of the mine The trade of the ore car was torn up for many feet a considerable amount of scrap iron was stripped off the skids and an apron on the ore bin on the level above blown off The greatest damage sas done to the pupips which were literally torn to pieces These had to be Immediately replaced to keep the water in the mine under control It was with difficulty that tbe men worked on account of the gas from the explosion Several came near fainting and were hoisted to the surface In a semi conscious condition During all this time Foreman Moodle never left his post and when the pumps were again started had to be helped to the surface
