the laborers who have Jbeen left in the larch by the con tractors should bayeipreftrre claims if pussiutc iiua jww is not available uniu the contract work Is completed so that the men to whom money is owing will hare to wait for sometime to come unless the matter is otherwise settled MrWood5 further iatated in answer to the commissioners questions that as far is he could tell the labor bills for the month of June were 3552 and for this month up to the time work was suspended about 11000 There were about 100 men to whom money was owing The commissioners allowed the matter to go over until next Tuesday In the meantime Mr Wood stated that he would try and arrange with Darby lajdea to take the contract offhis hands and coin ntfftA thn wArV Owens Brothers took the contract last Mannaryior wjuuu ineir oia was over 10000 lower than any other Now 16000 worth of work only has been accom flisbed and the rest remains to be done has always been said that the contract was taken too low A crowd of unpaid workmen assembled at North Beach yesterday Feeling ran Tery high among them and threats were freely expressed against Frank Owens and it may not be conduci re to his welfare if any of these lanorers should get him within reach It is understood that Owens Brothers are about to go into insolvency and that Jacob Bauer will be their assignee Theaystem of paying the seawall men was for the timekeeper to give them an order onJjiL Wood for their pay When the order was presented he would either pay it or inform the bearer that he would hare to wait until the Harbor Commissioners drew a State warrant for work performed Consequently laborers for months past have bad to depend on the contractors being paid before they got any money Mr Wood yesterday did not present to the board an which were then stated to the courtwere all that the Government expected to prove he had no doubt that the prosecution must faiL The Indictment was for presenting a fraudulent and fictitious claim to the Government As a matter of fact no claim was presented All that the Government had to show as a claim were unsigned memoranda of weights and quantities of coat delivered which memoranda were furnished at the requestor the Government for the convenience of the board of examiners charged with the duty of inspecting the1 goods received and reporting thereon payments were msae oy tne uovernment on the report of these examiners and not on the memoranda furnished by the contractors Under these circumstances having no evidence of the presentation of a fictitious claim within the meaning of the law and fortified by the opinion expressed by Judge Hoffman in open court when he was in the full possession of all his faculties AttorheyGarter says that he felt that he would not be years past sden tlsts familiar with the strata of the earth on theeast side of this Sierra Nevada mountains have declared that i would be a physical irn possibility to obtain artesian water on that side of the range In some places attempts were made which resulted in failure thus in a measure substantiating the theory which had been advanced In the few attempts which were made howe ver it is a noteworthy fact that the experimenters went through sand and graveL From 206 to 229 feet it was arsin throueh black mud I and sandit The next fire feet was through logically described as being composed partially of quartry but largely of greenstone which has the appearance of bavin been washed to it present bed rroma considerable distance At the bottom of this five foot deposit at a depth from the surface of 234 feet a powerful saeam was encoun tere lt which rose in the well and flowed continuously Over the top of the casing to a thickness of one half inch all round This was estimated to egual in volume five miners inches From this depth of 234 Teet pieces of petrified wood were brought to the surface on some of which the bark still re mained and which could be pulled off in stringy fibrous films I ordered the boring to continue however in hopes of developing a still greater stream and my anticipations were more then realized At 254feet a powerful body of water was encountered which rose like an enormous fountain from the orifice at the surface It kept np a steady flow not diminishing in the least and formed a miniature Jake on the surface the water exfendingover from fbrtr to fifty acres of ground The volume equals twenty miners inches supplying 1JW gallons oi remarxaoiy pure water in twenty four hoars to each inch or 259200 eallons In all every twenty four hours That 1 believe is a well to be proud oi for it is ample and lasting for Irrigation purposes News of the success of the well spread like wild fire and people came frommites Around to see it with their own eyes as they expressed it This well was completed on July 2d and another well about one mile distant from the first is now being sunk In this wster has already been found but the work is still in prpgress In addition to what water may be obtained from artesian wells all the land north and eastot Honey lake aggiegating between 50000 and 60000 acres will within the next twelve attempt had been made -A number of San Francisco partiesowh lng land In this valley and who were un able to maxe satisfactory arrangements to obtain water for irrigation decided a short time since to bore for artesian water This idea was ridiculed but Dr Grjndley of this city determined to push the project and supervise the work All the persons interested contributed to an assessment fund ana the work of boring was begun about June 15th The Nevada California and Oregon Railroad runs from Reno Nev td Amedee its present terminus at the northeast corner of Honey lake and the well which is an eight inch one was sunk on DrOrihdleys S2U acre tract about Half a mile from the railroad and about two miles southeast of Amedee As this is the first successful well sunk on the east slope of the Sierras the propress of the work as related by Dr Grindley will be of interest The first twenty sixVfeet said the doctor was sunk through a sedimentary deposit of a white ash character where the first water was found but it did not rise The next fourteen feet was through black mud and sand This continued to be the general character of the Tarings down to 106 feet where the second water was fonnd andwhich rose in the tubal to within twelve feet of the topof the casing Continuing down to 202 feet the same general character of soil as last described was taken out From202 to 206the auger to supply water to the lands north of the lake by October of this year and the lands east of the lake by next spring The canal will pass within two miles of Amedeeon the northeast It will be thirty feet wide at the bottom with slop ingsides and will have a fall of two feet to the mile Messrs Hutchinson 1L Leavitt and By Dodge have acquired the lands south of Eagle lake so that the source of supply from the lake to Willow creekwill be upon their own property iThey also Town and have had in operation for some years past the 8uan river reservoir system with a large reservoir on the high land west ol Honey lake They contemplate uniting the two systems so that either may re enforce the other i With this abundant supply of water the greater portion of the valley east of Honey lake will doubtless be brought under cultivation by this time next year In consequence of the activity in this new sectioarin land and irrigation projects Professor Hilgard chief tof the department of agriculture of the State UniversUyr visited the valley during the last week in June He collected samples of the soil and waters from the various hot and cold springs His analysis of the soil shows that it Is equal in
