Every branch of sports was represented ttere and the occasion could not have teen complete without the exhibition of tbe exponents of diving and swimming the opening regatta of tbe Dolphin Rowing Club there was an exhibition of fancy diving and a swimming race between Joe McCarthy and Jack Bortmann of tbe club This was the first swimming thst bad been done by McCarthy in a long time He showed Greyhounds of the San Francisco Coursing Clnb The San Francisco Coursing Club has Jnst closed one of the moat successful coursing seasons ever held in this State The San Francisco Club which came into being in September ot last year has made a more than creditable showing Immediately after its formation under the presidency of Dommick Shannon it announced that it would open the season on Thanksgiving day with an all aged and a pappy stake On the night of tbe nominations no less than sixty four dugs entered for the all aged stake and twelve Mary Ann by Glenfarron put of Trip the Daisy The runner up was Perry famous bitch Cocmassle a fall sister ot Jack Dempsey On February 4th the club gave Dickson a complimentary benefit at their park for which thirty two of the cracks of tha district entered Like all the previous meetings the coursing was first clas and the Attendance large The dogs in this meeting seemed so fairly matched that Mr Grace found it impossible in many courses to separate them and consequently had to tend them again to slips This ot coarse used up much ve nable time so that when train hour came the stake had to be divided between four of the flyers left in viz Tiernant Long John DobeTtr Daisyt Cranstons Marvelous and Cromnt Dotty Dimple One hundred and twenty eight dollars was divided between the four Tbe next meeting of the club was tbe interstate meeting held on Sunday March 4th and Utb Fifty dogs entered for this event and in all probability it was tbe most representative coursing match ever held in this Bute The Enelish kennels were represented by two of the direct descendants of the great Greentie arid Mas ter Sam through Flashlight and Barney while Australia had two representatives of its stock present in Wattle Bloom and Waratah Tbe principal kennel of tbe East Lowes was represented by a son and daughter ot Lord eversettle Tbe various kennels of the Coast were shown up by the production ot the old California stock grafted on the proceny nf imported Tempete Cartrieht King John Teresa and Young MJsterton During the first day or this faceting the hares were good and strong and as a Three Hundred Wheelmen Expected Luncheon at San Beach Mateo Personal Gossip About Local Cyclists Coming Eace Events To morrow will be tbe greatest day experienced in the ranks of cycling for tbe year 1894 as it it fully expected that there will be 300 wheelmen in line for the joint picnic run of all local clubs to San Mateo beach The Garden City Cyclers under command of Captain Butler will leave Ban Jote at 7 30 a and Captain Gib son in command of tbe San Jose Road Clnb will follow toon after with hit goodly string of hardy rood riders These two clubs are to meet the local contingent and take their respective pos tions in the nivnto wjiitj FAST MILES BY FANTASY ROBERT AND Expressive Steve Sidmont Azote Ilomestake Are All Winners to his old lore and is now in pretty good form He was at one time champion of the Coast and in fact beat all comers native and foreign Joe first developed his Qualities as a fast swimmer in tbe baths at Alameda where he won all the trophies put up on both long and short distances He held toe championship for three and half years durine which time he beat Joe Fleming one of the greatest ot professionals without any trouble He met his Waterloo Stockton where he was beaten in fresh water bv Flnkham Who gave great promise as a swimmer A return match resulted in a dead beat and before the tie conld be swam Pinkham died leaving McCarthy master of tbe field Before losing the race to Pinkham 1st nad a record ot eighteen straigbt nway matches open to all comers independent of weight McCarthy in condition weighed only 120 pounds and he slid through the I Kater like an el The coming man for mile amateur and Prof lessor Harry Clark the swimming teacher I ol tbe club is very proud of him He won his first race in a 100 vard dash and I the same evening swam a quarter and a half mile go He diver both high and low and his tricks in the water are marvelous The Olympic Club will be the center ol the sport this year and already the bovs have been gathering in the tank The fair devotees too ol the sport have been massing in great numbers and on class days there has been a full attendance for tha past two weeks The club will have another tournament either in Augnst or September present it is proposed to Kite an exhibition on ladies night in Augnst but tbe shortness of tbe time may necessitate a nostDonement of tbe event onlil the followme month George McConib one of tne best swimmers won by Tiernant result the coursing was first class but nn fortunately on tbe second day the hares showed up anything but well and there were not enough of them to finish tbe stake six dogs being left occasion 290 Tbe finish of this meeting was cer tainly not satisfactory as coursing men have alwavs a dislike to unfinished stakes April 14th saw the members again at Newark with tweniy eht dogs Asplen did day sport resulted the stake being won by Perigos clever bitch Wee Lassie The runner np was Neary dog Magpie Tbis latter dog is both last and clever but his breeding Is unknown The moat divided at this meeting was 200 It was the only members match held bv tbe club during the Beason As some twenty or thirty hares still remained in the held a sixteen dog stake was held on June 3d Great and pleasing as were all the meetings during the sea son it is verv questionable it any of them gave more real pleasure than this one The hares were flyer anil after tbe many showers that fell during the previous week the grounds of the park were in splendid order There was plenty ot time too nothing was hurried ana true sport was tho order of the day Wee Lassie again came to the iront winning each of ber four courses in a dashing style thut proving herself one of the best hounds ot the season The runner up in this match was John Eagan yonng dog Empire a son of Shortstop and Sly Girl He is certainlv a dog likely to be heard ot again during the coming coursing season fpr his efforts in this match went far to prove that he will be a credit to his great aire and greater dam One of the hounds which appeared in most of these meetings is deserving ot special mention Though she did not at any urn reach first or second money yet she had frequently taken a share of the stake and a various times has met and upset some of the best cracks She is aptly named Pride or the Park This little wonder is a perfect pictnre of beauty and weighs but thirtv seven pounds She is dark bnrtdle in color and is much more like an Italian greyhound than anything else She Is certainly the most awkward customer that any greyhound could meet in the first or second course She too is a granddaughter ot the imported Tempete whose grandsons and granddaughters Were first and second in all those meetings save one a fact which should not be lost sight of by breeders ot greyhounds Mr Grace judged and Wren slipped for all the meetings sare that held on April 15th and no greater proof of these gentlemens ability could possibly be given than tbe fact that from first to last there was not even a whimper of dissatisfaction During th season the San Francisco Conning Club gave altogether six meetings daring which 2G3 regular courses were run besides some thirty six undecided There was divided altogether be tween the various winners the handsome samofti20 All the members and tha officers of this clnb may well be congratulated on the seasons aork and it is to be hotd that tbe success of tbe past will be a make a complete force on entering the town This joint run is an annual affair Last year the destination was Hay wards and was largely attended by unattached riders as well as clubmen This year it 1 was determined to hold a picnic as satisfactory arrangements coud not be made with any hotel whereby they could feed sucb a large assemblage The refreshment committees from the various clubs have given much time toward the securing of good wholesome provender and believe that no one will need to go awav hungry All visiting wheelmen and tho who are not members of any dub are cordially invited to attend The run will start promptly at 9 A from the corner of Twenty second and Folsora streets The pace will necessarUy be stow owing to such a largo number being in line Last Sunday a qnartet of wheelmen consisting of White Edwards 8 Scovern and Cox had an enjoyable ride through Morago valley and Redwood canyon A feature of this trip was the trial by Cox of attaching a heavy bough entifully
